Okay, new to this, currently in the process of closing on a new contract at BLT but had a question about the RCI network. I've read several times that trading points with RCI is not a good use of points and I don't understand why. What am I missing? For us to stay in a one bedroom at BLT for seven nights would be 270 points but to stay at a RCI resort it would only cost 160 points. I know there is a $95 transfer charge but that seems pretty minor when we could save 110 points. Is there an issue with the quality of the resorts in the RCI network? Or are they just difficult to reserve? Please help me understand what I'm missing. Thanks in advance.

I think the biggest issue has been with the quality of the resorts.

The higher quality resorts are very difficult if not impossible to get except in the off season which means you have to settle for a lower quality resorts during prime season or be willing to go in the off season to the top quality resorts.

Also I believe that most people do not think they offer as many higher quality resorts as Interval International did previously.

I am new to this as well and have not exchanged out yet. We are currently on the waitlist for an exchange in 2010 so will see how it works out.

For me I can rent an RCI vacation for such a relatively small amount of money, it makes swapping DVC for it silly.

eg, This summer I have reservation in a 2 bed RCi unit in Cornwall, England (its one the DVC - RCI lists as well) for a week (270 points) that I rented of Tug2 for $800. That wasn't a difficult deal, there were loads of renters for that sort of Rate. people simply reselling their RCi weeks that they cant use, simply to get enough to cover their members fees this year.

So if I had used my 270 points ($2700 at current rental rates) plus the $95 fee, it would be $1995 more expensive to use DVC points that not.

Thus trading to RCI is very very rarely worth doing unless you cant abide any sort of hassle.

There are many reasons why trading DVC is not a good value in ALMOST all circumstances but lets make it easy. Look at the cash rate for say a 2 BR for a week. Then ask yourself if you'd pay that rate for a week in Cancun or Aruba for a 2BR, if not, enough said. Plus as noted, often you could get that week for pennies on the dollar using other exchange options through II or now RCI.
