RCI for DVC Villas?

I'd never tell someone they made a mistake, it depends upon why they actually purchased it in the first place. For any timeshare, even DVC, the value is in the use of the timeshare. If the purchaser uses the timeshare regularly, chances are it is a good value for them. If the purchaser stops using the timeshare, or becomes bored with available locations, then it is time to sell...and hopefully whatever they sell for, plus the dues and fees they've paid, they've still come out cheaper than renting a similar accommodation.

I don't literally say "you made a mistake". :) But the first thing out of my mouth is something to the effect of can you still rescind?

We bought Wyndham from the developer years ago before it was so easy to find so much information online. I've learned the ins and outs and we've gotten wonderful use out of it. If we could go back in time though, there's no way we'd buy from the developer - we'd buy resale for pennies on the dollar. To me, if I can buy something cheaper and I didn't - that's a mistake. Heck, if I buy something and then later see a $5 off coupon I could have used but didn't, I think darn I made a mistake. Maybe it's just me.

"the ppl were going on and on about how they were at the animal villa and his granddaughter fed the giraffes and another talked about staying in the epcot center."

Fed the giraffes? This is news to me. They might have seen the giraffes eating but as far as I know no one except the Cast Members who work with the animals get to feed them. We took a backstage tour at AK and got to "meet" a white rhino (he was in a holding chute for an exam), a male elephant who was out in the yard next to the elephant barn and a lovely giraffe who was in the giraffe barn. But we were specifically told that we would not be 'up close and personal' with the animals. And they 'stayed in Epcot"? As in there is a villa in Epcot?
What company did she buy into? Fairfield? Marriott? There are companies that are more desirable and can do exchanges more easily. I have a cousin who owns Fairfield in Las Vegas and has done trades often but they bought in Las Vegas because they like to go there.
Whatever happens check out the cost of your hotel deal vs. staying in a DVC villa with the added expense of park tickets and food and see how it compares. Good Luck.

Oh Ya this one may not be ideal for Disney but for why she got it. I think it will work for that. If I happen to be able to find a way to use it for Disney that's just my luck. It won't work this year that is for sure.

I think the ak thing was about watching the animals eating out not fed but ,hay I could have misheard or the story I don't know LOl

How happy will they be when they realize they could have bought for pennies on the dollar?

At this point, we are almost certainly past any rescission window, so there's not much point in continuing to beat this drum.

Many people buy their first (or even first few) timeshares directly from the developer. Yes, they could have done it less expensively, but most of those people still get plenty of enjoyment out of their timeshares.

It depends, they may not be depending on the delivery of the documents. I would suggest that a large % of people who buy retail are not happy with their investment long term but I know many are as well.

I agree, I'm from Europe and for most people timeshares equals a scam. In the past a lot of people bought into timeshares or vacations clubs and lost a lot of money doing so.

So most will say stay away or frown if you mention that you own a timeshare.

There are multiple facets to this issue. There are those that just ASSUME Timeshares are bad and truthfully, there are many like that here on DIS. When you see someone post they wouldn't own a timeshare if not Disney, usually that's the scenario, they simply aren't educated on the matter. And most of those who are happy with timeshares started out with some type of retail purchase, fortunately for me, I'm one of the exceptions. Still, timeshares are almost always sold not bought so a large % of people buy, never learn the system and never use the timeshare to it's fullest potential and often not at all. What that % is, I don't know. The people in reference in this thread had apparently done some investigation but still bought retail which suggests either they didn't investigate sufficiently or they believed the hype of the sales critters or both. Since it's LV, it's likely Bluegreen, Westgate, Wyndham, or one of the RCI points resorts like Grandview or Peace Canyon. If I had to guess, I'd say Grandview. It's unlikely to be Hilton or Marriott as described, esp Marriott since RCI is mentioned. So it's likely they paid significant dollars for something literally worth nothing or close to it if they wanted out and likely something they could have gotten for little or nothing on the secondary market with no real loss in options. Unfortunately Nevada has a shorter period than most at 5 days but I suspect there are other measures as in most states (all I know of) that require certain actions before the clock starts ticking. Hopefully they'll learn their system (both home and exchange) well and use it to the fullest. If they do, they'll be ahead of most people and it could be a blessing to them.
