RCI for DVC - Issues

anyone else use RCI to go to Disney? My mother has been an RCI member for over 25 years. But this year, we have been trying to trade our RCI points for DVC and we keep being told that nothing is available! I'm getting ticked - my brother usually has no trouble. We want to go the week after Thanksgiving this year and I'm starting to get worried that we'll have to settle for less -:headache:

You need to ask on the DVC boards - that's where the timeshare / RCI experts are.

My understanding (limited) is that you really need a strong trader to get DVC most of the time.

Also early December is just about the most popular DVC booking time and could be mostly booked by now since members could book their home resorts for that time frame as of a few weeks ago. It is a super popular time for DVC owners to visit the parks - the first 10 days of December.

Uh, no...there are plenty of what I would regard as not-so-fab resorts that trade far above where DVC does. "Strong trader" is relative in RCI ;) It's what THEY consider a strong trader, not necessarily what one would intuitively think should receive a high valuation.

OP, DVC costs 25 TPUs pretty much across the board right now. Does your mother's unit pull that many TPU's? If not, she can combine deposits to make 25 TPUs and then get "change" if the deposit exceeds it. Thanksgiving has come up a bunch of times recently in weeks, so my guess is that her unit doesn't have enough TPUs to pull it.

ETA - I just saw that she's in RCI points and not weeks. Points has had some good deposits too...not sure if she just doesn't have enough points for DVC maybe??

DVC deposits a lot of units in both RCI Points and RCI Weeks. I have traded twice into DVC Vero Beach (once in Points, once in Weeks), once into DVC Hilton Head and have a reservation for the Villas at Wilderness Lodge in June.

It might be helpful to join the Timeshare Users Group at www.tug2.net . It's not expensive (I think $15 a year) and members post daily sightings of DVC units. Available units don't last long, especially the bigger units.

They have been posting the majority of the units about six months out, I think, so you may be a little early for November. If she was in RCI Weeks, an ongoing search would be in order. I'm not sure if you can do that in Points.

I put it here since I was trying to use my mother's points/weeks to get more for my money. She can go either way (she has three weeks now and I don't know how many points...) I know we have an ongoing search, but we have to book before March to get when we want for our local travel deals through Boscov's. I don't want to have to book a value or moderate and then re-book through RCI later - I would probably have to pay a cancellation fee on the first room.

I'm a DVC member, and that week is about the most popular for DVC members. You'll likely not find any weeks available.

there is a member social that week as well as when internet meets occur

so what is your second choice? :rolleyes1

I am an RCI Weeks owner and I have been watching pretty much daily, there has only been one weeks deposit that I have seen and that was starting on the 17th of Nov, so that really did not include all of the Thanksgiving weekend. So don't give up yet.... I saw that week I think right after Christmas. I think it's a bit early. Most weeks I see are in the October timeframe. I am waiting for something too...:hippie:

You are a tad early as DVC inventory gets deposited no sooner than 10 months out. Currently you can only see DVC inventory through Nov. 10 (which is exactly 10 months from today). I trade into DVC several times a year--both in RCI points and RCI weeks. I just got back from a week at Saratoga Springs and a week at Wilderness Lodge Villas in December; in May I have 2 consecutive weeks at Saratoga Springs and I also got my sister a week at Boardwalk Villas; and in October Animal Kingdom Villas. If you use RCI weeks you will need at least 25 TPU's so you may have to combine a couple of deposits.

Where do you own, meaning what state.
I believe if you own a t/s in Florida, you cannot trade into DVC through RCI.
Not sure but thought I remembered this.
I own DVC and 2 other t/s, one being in Orlando (Orange Lake Country Club) and think I remember hearing or reading this on the tug boards (tug2.net).

You cannot exchange into a WDW DVC resort if you are exchanging a resort within a 30-mile radius of the WDW DVC resort.

I have had a deposit request for any Disney property for the last 2 weeks of August (2011) since last April. I am not holding on to much hope. Originally, RCI had quoted "over a year" for a trade. I figured 16 months would cover it.
Hmmmm......

I just checked RCI inventory on the weeks side and there are two units available for August. Both are studios at SSR. One is Aug. 27-Sept. 3 and the other is Aug. 28-Sept. 4. They both require 25 TPUs. Do you have at least 25 TPUs in your RCI account?

I also just checked RCI inventory on RCI Points side and here is what I see for your dates (I'm not sure if you also have RCI Points):

OKW
1BR
Aug. 21-28
Aug. 26-Sept. 2

SSR
1BR
Aug. 19-26
Aug. 20-27
Aug. 26-Sept. 2
Aug. 27-Sept. 3
studio Aug. 26-Sept. 2

Do you have enough trading power to get a DVC week. Under the new RCI Weeks system, most weeks require at least 25. A few are more. What is your week rated?

Sheila

Thanks for the info. I will have to check the trading power. We also have a 2br requested, but could probably squeeze into a 1br (1 adult, 3 older kids). Who spends much time in their room anyway?

I know you can combine units to obtain higher trading power. Can you combine a weeks unit and a points unit?

My yearly condo in the US Virgin Islands is on weeks, while my every-other-years condo in the Smokey Mountains is on points.

I'm pretty sure I don't have enough trading power by itself to trade into DVC..I think I only have about a 15 on my USVI condo.

You can just go online and check your TPU's. It is easier than calling RCI.

this should be over at DVC boards..... there are lots of threads relating to it there....also another pp mentioned TUG2- join there, you'll find units thru RCI they come up frequently also many many many nice looking places right nearby are always up

If you don't want to wait for DVC, you could book Bonnet Creek. It's as close to being on property than being "on property". There is inventory right now. A 2BR Aug. 13-20 is 25 TPU's and another 2BR for Aug. 20-27 is 21 TPU's.

Does DVC depost 2BR -- that may be killing the search. I have a 35 TPU unit on the Cape and an ongoing search for all DVC except for OKW and SSR for end of July through early August 2011 was filled in just over a week at BWV. I requested just a 1BR though.
