This may be a strange question, but can anyone recommend a razor for a teen boy who needs to start shaving? My son has very light hair but it is starting to stick out and resemble a billy goat. He attends a school with a dress code that includes facial hair so he needs to learn to shave before August.

I asked his friend's mom about electric vs. regular and she said her son uses a regular razor but she didn't say what kind. I thought I would ask here and see what kind of feedback I get.

My husband uses an electric but he says it tore his face up at first, so he didn't think that would be the best choice. The thought of my kid using razor blades on his face makes me cringe!

Gillette Fusion Proglide. Get something good like that where you buy new blades, not the cheap disposables. He will definitely cut himself I'm sure, but make sure he knows he really doesn't need to push hard!

If you want to make an economic statement, start off with an old style double edge razor. It takes a little practice, but when you get the hang of it, it's well worth it. Whipping up your own lather with hot water and being able keep your lather warm is heaven. You can buy 100 blades for $8 on Amazon. Check out badgerandblade.com.

DS' first razor was a Norelco Cool something electric razor. It was about $120 I believe. I chose to start him off with electric because he has tremors and I didn't want his shaking to cause him to cut himself. He has since went to a regular razor (something like the Gilette mentioned above) of his own doing and I guess he likes it better.

Since dh hasn't shaved in years (see my Avatar :rotfl2:) I had to ask a young kid working in the store which one he would recommend. I ended up getting ds a razor with replaceable blades as well as shaving cream for sensitive skin.

My son uses a regular disposable razor. I thought for SURE he would be a complete mess with cuts, etc, but he actually does a pretty good job and I can't recall a single bad cut he gave himself. He uses shave creme, and I'm certain that helps. He is 14 and been shaving daily for 6-7 months. :scared1:

My son uses an electric razor. They work great for young men with thin beards.

My DH has always used an electric.
He does also have a regular razor... not sure which one... something like the pro-glide... When one wants to do touchups, or make sure they have that super smooth baby soft skin... this will sometimes do better than an electric.

NOTE: If you want an electric, we swear by the rotary. A nice Norelco. (not a cheaper model, which have gone too cheap since Philips bought them out)

The others that are not rotary, but the blades move back and forth inside the foil, they can really vibrate in your hand, and are a bit louder buzzing. They do not work as well for some men. They will work with straighter hair that grows straight out from the skin, but they are not good at picking up hair that might curl and grow back in towards the skin.

My DS does too because he can give himself a 15 second buzz every morning and be done. He's not exactly the "metrosexually-precise" grooming type (read kind of a slob) and I'm sure he would never bother to wet, lather and blade-shave properly.
