I was shooting in RAW today with a girlfriend (I do see a big difference).

Can RAW files be batch converted to JPEG with out editing each and every one? I do not mind doing that, just so I can show them off w/o trying to edit 300 photos. Even 1/2 of them. I want to do a quicky convert just to show them to her.

Can it be done? :)

yes....

How depends on what software your using...

I usually don't do much with mine, but I had a shoot that the WB was way off, so I adjusted the first one and applied the same changes to each in Photoshop. Worked like a charm.

Definitely... whatever software your camera manufacturer provided should have that functionality. If not, plenty of other packages do - you can even use Irfanview, if you also grab the Irfanview Plug-ins. It will happily do batch conversions of darn near anything, including raw to jpg.

Right now my big problem is when I go to associate a program with a file extention, it opens word pad

It is ticking me off because I almost always use photoshop. I have ACDSEE and like it but it just is not photoshop.

I looked in photoshop and can not find where to download pics from the camera.

You may want to try this...

Hold down either "Shift" key on your keyboard, then right-click the mouse on top of the file icon. You should get a dropdown menu with an "Open with..." option. You can then pick what program you want the file to be opened with or you can browse your hard drive for a specific program executable.

I believe there is an option to checkmark "Use this program every time I open these types of files".

Good Luck.

You should be able to launch whatever program came with your camera by hand, then point it to the folder that you have your raw files in.

What camera are you using? If it is a Nikon, you may need their software, Nikon Caputre, to convert them. That is what I have and no other program I had at the time would open their version of RAW. And it does have the ability to convert all files to jpeg in one operation. It actually does each one at a time but you select them all and it just runs until it is complete.

ig you have a canon, canon digital pro does batch conversion...photoshop elements does not and while you are supposed to be able to add an editor, i could add the editor but it wouldn't work that way( although my photoshop e5 is usually not working right)it takes a while depending on how many photos you do as it converts them automatically but one at a time according to the setting you put in before hand

1) Open Photoshop.
2) Select "File | Browse..." from the menu. This will open up Adobe Bridge.
3) In Adobe Bridge, navigate to the folder with your photos.
4) Select the photos you want.
5) Right click on one of them and select "Open in Camera Raw...".
6) Click on the "Select All" button in the upper left corner.
7) Click on the "Save x Images..." button (x is the number of pictures you selected).
8) Fill out the values on the Save Options screen to your desired settings (particuarly the format = JPEG).
9) Click the Save button.

Another option in Photoshop would be to record an action that opens the RAW file, converts it to 8-bit mode, and saves it as a JPG. I've never done it, so I'm not sure that you could open RAW files with an action, but I'm guessing that you can.

Check and see if your camera will save both file formats at the same time. this may be a newer feature on some cameras and yours may not include it. I know you already know this but others may not realize that jpg is a file format that throws information away never to be seen again every time you save that file. Save it enough and your picture will look terrible. Work in RAW or tif when you can.

Mine does save in both formats but it can take a chunk of space on the memory card so I want one or the other. :)

I am going to try the suggestions for photoshop! Thanks so much!

I'd forget TIFF and go with PNG, which has lossless compression, so you still won't lose any data but won't have such obscenely large files as with TIFF.

with adobe pse5 you can also save in dng and embedd the raw file in it so you can get it back if needed...after you close and say you want to save, a window opens and you have those options there.

I'd forget PNG as well. Save as PSD so that you can keep all of your layers.

Can you adjust the saved size? Mine allows me to save RAW and any size JPG, so I save a small JPG along with it. It doesn't take up much space and memory cards are really, really cheap these days.

If you save small jpg, will the RAW be small as well or will the RAW always be full size?

I counted, I have 2-2gig cards and at least 8 1 gig cards. :lmao: HOW I got so many I have no idea!

RAW is RAW. Changing jpg size doesn't affect it. It is essentially just a recording of the values that came off of the sensor before any scaling, sharpening, white balancing, saturation adjustment, or contrast adjustments are done.

You've got access to 12GB of storage. I'd stick with RAW if you feel they are more to your liking.

OK I didn't know if it changed both settings or just the JPG setting. I think I would like to keep a small JPG file (if anything to quickly scan through photos on the computer).

I have ACDSEE on here and it seems change extension of things (on it's own, I do nothing, not even use the program). At first I thought it was just JPG but yesterday it changed the RAW extension. I was glad you guys suggested the RAW plugin, so I can avoid ACDSEE unless looking at JPG (even so, it sometimes changes the extension there. Drives me nuts!!).

There is something wrong with my computer and it is a bit beyond what I know. You normally can change what program opens an extension. Not on mine. No matter what I try it opens word pad :(

Changed the extension, or changed the associated program? (The latter being that the filename is the name, but double-clicking it opens a different program than you expect, and usually the icon for that extension has changed.)

Some programs will monitor for changes in how extensions are associated and grab them back if they have a chance. This is most common with media players, all of whom want to make sure that you load them and not the others. Some leave small "stub" programs running in the background to monitor these settings. Possibly ACDSee is doing this?

Try giving Irfanview a shot, it's very responsible about grabbing extensions (it clearly tells you and makes sure that you're OK with it) and doesn't grab them back if something else changes them, unless you again tell it to.
