You can download Nikon Transfer for free from the nikon site. This will allow you to download the pics from your memory card to your harddrive. You can also use it to download to two different folders (ie: 1 folder on one hard drive and another folder for backup on a 2nd hard drive).
Then you can also download Nikon ViewNX for free. It does some basic editing like white balance, exposure compensation, highlight protection, shadow protection, contrast, sharpness, color booster and D-Lighting HS. You can also change the picture control (Neutral, Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, etc...) and then once you make those changes (if you did make some) then you can convert to JPEG. The only thing I wish ViewNX did was crop. Otherwise it is great for basic stuff.
