RAW file format

I've been fiddling around w/ my Photoshop CS3. As some of you may know (I've posted in the past) that I am a total newbie re PP. Anyway, I figured it was time to jump in and start fiddling to get more comfortable with it. I do not have Capture NX2 or Lightroom. Just Photoshop CS3. Apparently, it comes with Camera Raw. I didn't know this until I accidentally clicked to open an NEF file instead of JPEG. :sad2: I know, I'm pathetic, but we all have to start somewhere, right? My question is: Sometimes when I go to open an NEF file I get a message that says that it can't be opened because it's the wrong type of file. Once I get this message, I can't go back and open it later. That's it. It's toast. (In Camera Raw at least.) Do any of you know why it does this? Other times, it's fine. I've worked on at least 10 photos sometimes, and then all of a sudden it won't open NEF. I close the program, fiddle around with some jpg stuff or whatever. Then go to reopen another NEF and it'll work. Then later it'll give me the same error message. Does anybody know what the problem is?

You may need a patch, depending on your camera model and what type of file it is producing. I know with CS3 and the Nikon D60, D90, D700 and D3 you need to download the free patch off the Adobe website to open the NEF files. Then in ACR you should be able to make any exposure and color balance changes.

Thanks! That must be the issue as I have a D90. Thank you!

Really nice correction, Boris.:thumbsup2
Here's a newbie question...do you need to edit everything you shoot in raw? (alas, I have very little free time these days...)

you can view the photos in raw, ie it's not a blank page, you might have to download a raw viewer( free), but you need to convert them to jpg to print( or some might from tiff, i think zenfolio might have let you upload tiff, can't remember at the moment but you still would need to convert from raw). you can do batch processing to convert in lightroom if they are all similar exposure etc. i just convert the ones i want to print then save the rest as raw files and occasionally go back and convert a few of them if i want to print them then. if you have it pretty close to accurate it only takes a min or so tops.per photo( unless you want to do some filters or artistic conversion type things)

I have recently started shooting RAW but I haven't figured out how to get the RAW images off of my camera :rotfl2: . Seriously, don't call me stupid. I usually do post processing in Photoshop (just elements). Do I need a separate program for the RAW images? Once on the computer, I will eventually need to save them as jpegs, correct?

Seriously, maybe I am stupid... ;) ...talk to me like I am 6.

Also, anyone have a basic tutorial for water marks?

elements has camera raw iir to download( i have elements 5 so not sure what the newer ones have ), if not you can get it free from adobe. you may need a raw viewer to see the files though (also free). i think microsoft has one if you use xp or older ( don't think it works for vista). that way you can see the raw files unconverted. if you down load a raw photo you'll be able to open it in elements( camera raw will pop up) or not be able to see it at all( i think it just comes up with a file number but no photo, sorry it's been a while since i didn't use raw) which will tell you that you need to down load the viewer

you save them in raw and save a copy in jpg or what ever you want to use post processing so you still have the original file with all the info on it. i usually just download in raw and process as i go, then save a copy in jpg in another file( one for where i download)

elements( 5 at least)does watermarking in the multiple processing(in 5 it's under file> process multiple files) but the only problem is you need to make sure you save a copy unwatermarked cause once the watermark is there you can't remove it. so i would save 2 jpgs, one in the original folder and one in another folder ( i called it need to be watermarked, creative huh) then make a watermark copy with the multiple process of the whole folder and rename that one adding watermarked and save it in my folder marked "watermarked". i usually made the watermark around 60% opacity i think but you just typed in what ever text you want and i think say where you want it positioned, really easy

watermarking is a hot topic i know but where i sell my stuff now they don't encourage watermarking( since it really detracts from the photo) but only let a low res small file be downloaded. ( it would make like a 1" x1" photo or some crazy size like that) so you could save a little low resolution file and load it to where ever you use to download and skip the watermarking. you might still need 2 files though, one for printing and one for downloading. or i think flicker / other sites lets you set the option not to allow large files to be downloaded.

what camera do you have...

My Sony's came with really good software that I use for processing my raw files and converting to jpeg, it also allows me to export the file directly to PAint Shop Pro Photo, if there is anything I want to do there..

Right now I am using the Nikon D40. I will soon be shooting with an inherited Canon 30D.

did you get software with the camera..

and to answer the original question...

I just connect my card using a card reader, then copy the files over to my pc using windows explorer...that way I have more control over where I put the files..

I generally set up my files like this. with the main folder, then subfolders for my raw and jpegs

Jpeg.

You can download Nikon Transfer for free from the nikon site. This will allow you to download the pics from your memory card to your harddrive. You can also use it to download to two different folders (ie: 1 folder on one hard drive and another folder for backup on a 2nd hard drive).

Then you can also download Nikon ViewNX for free. It does some basic editing like white balance, exposure compensation, highlight protection, shadow protection, contrast, sharpness, color booster and D-Lighting HS. You can also change the picture control (Neutral, Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, etc...) and then once you make those changes (if you did make some) then you can convert to JPEG. The only thing I wish ViewNX did was crop. Otherwise it is great for basic stuff.

Goto Canon's website. Download all the software for the Canon 30D. It includes a RAW convertor.

The other easy option is when you plug your memory card into your computer, just let Windows Explorer copy it to a folder. Adobe also has a downloader as well. I tend to not keep albmus w/ Adobe, so i use the Microsoft one. It should pop up automatically when you stick a card into your computer slot.

Open up Elements. Goto Adobe website to make sure you have the most updated version. 5 should have raw support already. Open up the pictures using Elements and do all your editing. Do Save As to jpg. Be sure to set your options for better quality conversion to JPG.

I use Bibble Lite as my raw convertor. Some people use Lightroom for their post-processing and keeping their albums in order.

I have a similar folder set-up like Mickey88's. I save to a general named folder. Then I have one called "Converted" for those converted to jpg.

Enjoy!

if you have pse later than 4 it should support a 30d. if you have earlier i think you can download an update so it recognizes it. then the raw should be fine. with my rebel it just automatically opens the camera raw when i try to open a raw file in pse( which i usually don't since i use lightroom) so it ought to do the same with your camera. the raw software with canon is digital photo pro but elements/camera raw is much better imo

Well, I can't seem to get my PSE to open my RAW files. I have PSE 4.0 and I updated the RAW plugin. It says is images are the "wrong file type". The images come onto my computer as .nef files.

Anyone have any insight? Maybe I will install lightroom.

your cameras are listed as supported so here is a link to what adobe suggests you do otherwise in case you didn't see it
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb407110&sliceId=1

if you downloaded the latest version of cr it's probably not compatible with your elements , it listed version 3.7 as compatible with elements 4. ( and that was ok for both the cameras) it has a link on the page for that download. if it still isn't working i'd reinstall it and try again. i think nef are just nikon files, canon show up as c something or other

here is a link for xp raw viewer
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=D48E808E-B10D-4CE4-A141-5866FD4A3286&displaylang=en those cameras are pretty popular so guess they are supported, couldn't find the list

really i like lightroom better than camera raw, not sure why since they are supposed to be same/similar it just seems lightroom gives me better control..maybe i've just gotten better with conversion;) i got it with a student discount at journey ed for $99. only thing i like better on elements is the marquee tool for cloning big things out

Success!!! Thank you! Now, of course all this time on the Adobe site makes me want to purchase a more recent Photoshop. :rotfl2:

I think I will hold off.

just me of course but i hardly ever use it now that i have lightroom. i have elements 5 and now it's basically just a receptacle for some plug ins i use. if you are going to spend money, try the lightroom trial and see how you like it before you upgrade the element

Good idea. I am downloading the PSE 7 trial now. Then I will try LR and see which I think I will use more.

Just returned from WDW and shot some RAW for the 1st time. I know can convert them to JPEG with photoshop but is there software available that I could convert them in batches if I wanted.

I am sure there will be some that I will want to tweak but others I may just want to convert and manually doing so seems very time consuming.

Thanks
