Rate the Ride: Star Tours

both of my ds' love this ride and my dh thinks it is really cool too. DD was terrified, and I think it's cute but it makes me sick to my stomach. :lmao:

Oh one more thing, I heard an (unconfirmed) rumor that they will be updating (at least possibly adding on a second ST attraction) for the Prequels...on the fence about that one.

I loved Adventure through Inner Space!
Star Tours is wonderful..I do wish they'd update it though.
And I'm sorry..but I miss Captain EO

Oh my gosh - me too!! Yeah, it may have been too much for some people, and the whole Michael Jackson stuff today is too weird - but I loved that movie!!

This is DD's (7) new favorite ride. We were just at DL today and even with the crowds she was able to ride it 7 times in honor of her b-day. I love the fact that it is not a major atttaction anymore - this means we will and can ride it even when there is a line because the line will be short!!!

Ok, so here's a question--does anyone know how they get that "forward" motion to feel like that? (when you go to lightspeed?) I understand being in a simulator, just am not sure how they produce that sensation of forward movement . . . it's totally awesome! (Valley girl speak--even though I don't live in the Valley . . . . )

Teehee...I personally think "it's totally wicked!", as said in the excited voice of Brad Bird's son doing the voice of the neighbor boy in The Incredibles.

We've been watching that just a teensy bit this week, and we've been watching the commentaries...:upsidedow

I only wish I knew how they made that feeling!

I think it's a better (more exciting) if you sit in the very back and on the sides. You get more movement.
This is still one our favorite rides. However, DH can't do it. Makes him too motion sick.

Star tours is an awesome ride, I love it, but its quite out dated. I heard a rumor awhile back that they were looking into updating it. That would be nice... there have been a few Star Wars movies since that ride was introduced.

I am not a fan of Star Tours! And it sounds like I'm the only one. It makes me sick every time because it seems to be a little off from the movements and what's on the screen.

I just don't like it when it is filled to capacity and there is no air to breath.

I wish George would tell his ILM crew to get to it and get the rumored new trilogy pod racing sequence completed to replace the existing, 20+ year old film. Oh I wish..,

Someone please explain to me again how I can find the old magnifying glass in ST?

We don't care for it. I don't even ride it. I just let Dh ride it if he wants and he sometimes does and sometimes doesn't (this is at WDW though, so it may be little different). Dh is a HUGE Star Wars fan. We don't like that robot they threw in there...don't remember his name, Dh knows.
It does make us both a little sick too.

The screen has come down, the film starts, and the motions begin as the "vehicle" starts raising up to the "launch" platform. You start moving forward, then suddenly veer off to the maintenance bay ("you're going the wrong way!")... the vehicle lurches downward then starts to stabilize and rise up again to go out the door (still above the vehicle). Down on the right side of the screen, sitting on the floor of the maintenance bay is the old ATIS magnifier. It's not in view very long - so be sure to watch for it. Once you start upwards towards the door, you pass right by it and then it's out of view.

If you miss it - go back on and try again... once you see it, you'll see it every time!!

That's Captain Rex. We adore him!:lovestruc

My 8 year old DS (Ryan), who is autistic but high functioning, is always asking us, "Is he a real robot?" That's a hard one to answer and explain to him so he understands. Dh and I are like, "Well, ummmm, the answer to that is yes and no......" Ryan just looks at us with this "HUH?" look on his face.:upsidedow

I've only been on the WDW version, but I'll be going on the DL version for the first time next month. :cool1:

I love Star Tours. I've been a monster Star Wars fan since the days of the original films, so getting to fly down to Death Star trench is a SW geek's dream come true.

I will say it's desperately in need of an update, but I still love it and don't miss it whenever I'm at the parks.

And I have a Captain Rex story too: my friend's 6-year-old, who loves roller coasters but was bored to tears by simulator rides, was upset that it was the same ride the 2nd time we rode it.

We knew his twin brother was going to want to ride it again, so to avoid a meltdown I pretended to get really angry and complain that every time I've been on that ride "That robot always screws it up!!"

So we went on it again just to "see if he gets it right this time." After it ended, my friend's son was completely flabbergasted that Rex still has a job because he can never fly the ship right. It was really funny. :rotfl:

are the WDW and DL versions the same?

Yes, they're exactly the same. There's some subtle differences in the queue area, and BIG differences in the exteriors of the attraction buildings themselves, but the ride is the same.:thumbsup2

The main difference is the fact that at DL it sits at the front edge of TL, and was originally thought to be a "space port". Even within the film itself, when you are coming back in to the port at the end of the ride, from outer space to the planet, the building you fly towards and into, somewhat resembles the shape and size of the actual bldg it's housed in.

At WDW, it sits inside the DHS park, so the building is basically shaped like a soundstage, and the exterior is themed to the Ewok village with a cool AT-AT, but like all movie sets, you see the back side of the village trees for the facades they are. Even when you first walk inside, you see the queue as a movie set instead, with exposed back sides of the "walls" reflecting that "'let's pretend we're on an active set" mentality that pervades DHS.

The initial queue room with the Starspeeder 3000 then is exactly a lift from Anaheim, with the ramp shaped the same as DL's (which was just a revamped queue line from the prior tenant - ATIS). The second queue room then is also like the Anaheim original, just oriented in a slightly different angle. What's really funny then in that room, as you climb the ramp, is that in Anaheim, the old Peoplemover track goes through that secondary room, and so the queue was simply built under and then around it... in WDW, the space and design for the Peoplemover track remains in the overall design, but there was no need for it, since no Peoplemover ever existed in DHS! The CM's use it as a walkway, but it's funny since the shape and design is exactly the same as Anaheim.

From the point of telling the CM how many are in your party - it's exactly the same. Same preshow film, same ride film. Definitely time for an update!!

ST had an absolutely AWESOME opening party - 60 hours of fun. Lines wrapping in and around TL, and then snaking all the way down, and up, and back down MS... that was fun. My brother and I went and enjoyed that party!! It is a very fun ride.

I went to the opening, too! Those 60 hour parties were so much fun. I went to the Captian EO one, too. We would get to DL at midnight on Friday bacause you got in cheaper. :thumbsup2 Go home at about noon on Sat..sleep a few hours and go back and do it all over again. :cool2:

WOW..that was when I was in High School. I can't imagine that I could do that now. =)

Okay, I'm a total ride chicken. I don't do coasters at all, or any type of drops. However, I've never had a problem with motion sickness (I love the teacups ride;) ).

Could I handle this one? :confused3 . Also--is it at all frightening for little kids (our youngest will be almost 5 when we go).
