Rate the DVC Resorts from First to Worst

Newer owners with two contracts so we’ve only stayed at four of them.
1. BLT, hubby loved our week long stay in a studio so much he wants to buy here.
2. AKLK, our only direct so far. Got to stay here for a RunDisney race.
3. BWV, we aren’t drinkers and hubby said it was too loud for the one night we stayed.
4. OKW, only got one night so didn’t really get to see the whole place.
We also own a resale at SSR but haven’t stayed there yet.

Over the 15 years we've enjoyed our DVC this line up has changed! We've never been to GC or AUL so they're not on my list. I love theming, so with that in mind: PVB, WL/CC, AK, BC, GF/RIV, BLT, SSR, OKW, HHI, VB

Where we actually choose to vacation (and this has REALLY changed): SSR (Disney Springs & Treehouses), BC (walkability), BLT (walkability, Outer Rim & 71), RIV (skyline and Bar Riva), AK-J (love all the iron work and décor of the lobby), PVB/GF (love the theme but the point cost is prohibitive), WL (love the theme but not Lodge insulation or the transportation). 15 years ago SSR was at the bottom of our list but now we're more inclined to enjoy Disney Springs than the Parks as old bodies and all that standing in line doesn't mix well.

so fun to read everyone's rankings - even resorts I haven't been super excited to try, I now see a reason to try!

I think my list is not only informed by "buy where you want to stay" but also - we fly, never rent a car, and really enjoy many of the sit-down and signature restaurants. We haven't been to Disney Springs in years. And we love fireworks, E ticket rides, and theming.

1. RIV (own) (s, 1, 2LO): most recent trip confirmed that DH and I like RIV best of all. The "backyard" with the pools, gardens, views is just so peaceful and pretty and compact. I love arriving to the upscale and pretty lobby and port-cochere and seeing the "backyard" through the windows. My kid love the feature pool, DH and I love the "quiet" pool which is long enough and empty enough to swim laps. The rooms are well-designed (love the outlets at all the beds, for example) and feel spacious, even the studios. Most recently we stayed in a 2br LO with another family of 4 and again - it felt like enough room for all of us. And we love Topolino's (may be our favorite restaurant not called Victoria & Albert's). The skyliner is it's own attraction. (We almost never take buses because we often do a split stay and visit MK/AK from the other resort.

2. VGF (own) (s, 1, 2LO): This is my kids' favorite and my favorite over Easter and Christmas. DH and I flip flop between VGF and RIV as #1 and 2, and sometimes it comes down to which parks we are visiting and whether we want a visit. We love everything about this resort - we've only stayed in the villas building and watching MK fireworks from our standard view villa is amazing. My kids are usually sleeping in the LR so it's nice to a) have the space and b) have the murphy beds. (same for Riv) Have I stayed in the resort studios? No. Do I plan to? No. I have stayed at the hotel rooms as well, and the villas building is the best. It's more peaceful and close enough to the restaurants and shops, but then we go back to our villa and it's so relaxing. And mostly great views. We love all the signature restaurants, Victoria and Albert's is not only our favorite restaurant on property but one of our favorite restaurants anywhere, and we live in NYC.

(Aulani (1br OV) might be in here: we've only stayed once and had the most spectacular 1br OV. Another one where we spent a lot of time just sitting on the balcony and relaxing. The spa was amazing. We've been to Hawaii a number of times though, and this trip was a split with Royal Hawaiian on points, and ... there are a lot of spectacular resorts in Hawaii, and I actually prefer Kauai or the Big Island, and would spend more time off-resort at one of the resorts that's not Aulani. Not a knock on Aulani at all, just that our non-theme park vacations are not usually so resort heavy.)

(Grand Californian (studio; 2br Dec 2024) might fall in here also. We are east coasters, so WDW is just so much easier for us to get to, and for short trips. The rooms could use at least refresh, if not a refurb. We really enjoyed our stay in the studio and we're looking forward to our upcoming stay. We've really enjoyed Disneyland and the different vibe from WDW, but practically speaking we aren't going to go every year or even every other year, so we are ok with waitlisting and trying at 8am at 7 mo)

3.TIE: BLT (own)/BWV (s, 1, 2): BLT was our first home resort, Lots of nostalgia for the Contemporary and "the monorail runs through the building!" BLT would be #3 on its own but it desperately needs the refurb and some murphy beds in the living rooms. I love the n+1 bathrooms (this is a thing with me), the low point costs and low dues, the views, and the muted sort of midcentury theming. I like that it's close but not too close to the hubbub of the Contemporary and the stores there. I love being a points cheapskate and seeing fireworks either at TOTWL or from a standard view room with the right request. Lake views are also gorgeous. But: NEEDS REFURB...

3. (TIE) BWV (s, 1, 2LO): we almost bought here, but I am glad we didn't. We've managed to stay in all 3 room views (standard, pool, BW view) using 7mo points, and we definitely like the BW view the best (fireworks view! Boardwalk view!) I'm glad we didn't buy points here because: 2042 expiration, all 2br are LOs and I don't like the layout, the kitchen has crummy counter space, and we've been able to book here at/near 7mo. whenever we've tried, and only once using the WL for BW and standard views. Walk to 2 parks, we love the BW area, and Flying Fish is one of my favorite restaurants. The kids love the surrey bikes, I love the vibe of the whole area. I'm not in love with the villa layouts (other than the studios) - not only is the connecting door of the LO in a strange place, there are too many doors swinging every which way in the main bathroom. That said, it's a great deal on points, so this is where we sleep around most. If I ask the kids where we want to switch, or recommendations for other families, BWV is the first resort they name.

5. BCV (s, 1, 2ded) - I almost put this 6th. But: our first stay at BCV was on rented points shortly after we'd bought BLT points, and DH saw Stormalong Bay and wanted to sell our BLT points. At the time DD2 was a toddler and DD1 could not swim well. I maintain that SAB and BCV are most fun when everyone is a stronger swimmer, which has now happened. Same as BWV though, we've never had trouble getting a room at 7mo, and we don't *have* to be there every time. Balance that with - no views, long-ish walk to SAB, food, main entrance, mostly tiny balconies, weirdly large master bath layout (like BWV), I'm ok not owning points here and staying here every once in a while. The walk to Epcot and the skyliner, though ... awesome!

6. AKV (hotel room (J), 1(J), 2ded(K)) - It has a freakin' savanna! I love the theming in the main building and the shops and the restaurants. We didn't stay here until the kids were out of strollers, and then we've come multiple times. Our 7mo points have had no problem getting savanna view rooms and we are happy paying for that view. We did stay in a value 1br in 2021 and I found it a bit small. On the whole (thanks to room recommendations here), we liked the pool, lobby restaurants and amenities at Jambo, but preferred the space and n+1 baths in the larger units at Kidani, so near the Zazu elevators was perfect for us: the space of Kidani with a short walk to Jambo. All of that said, I am not a huge fan of the dark wood in the rooms, so I don't think I'd do more than 3-5 days at a time. But it was so peaceful and beautiful from our balcony on the savanna. (but also needs some refurb...)

As written, it looks like AKV comes in "last place", but these are the DVCs where we've stayed. BRV and CCV and Poly are on our list, especially now that Poly has larger units coming online. We are always there for dinner and resort-hopping. CFW - might try on a later trip if we bring some of DDs' friends without additional grownups - then we'd stick the kids in the bedroom. But not a ton of interest until there are more resort amenities easily accessible.

SSR and OKW ... my kids are still park commandos and aren't really interested in DS - maybe more now that their stamina is outpacing mine. We now go til park close and so ease of travel between the park and the resort is a much bigger factor, but buses are now also WAY easier with 4 people who can carry their own stuff and get on and off a bus on their own 2 feet. We did once have a short-notice trip (opening of Toy Story Land, still had stroller) where we could have used DVC points to stay at SSR or Marriott points to stay at Swan. We stayed at the Swan that time, and we haven't had occasion to consider staying at SSR or OKW since.

8-Rivera- I know there are those who love it and I wanted to too but I just did not enjoy our stay there. This is going to sound crazy since VGF is my favorite but Rivera felt way too stuffy for me. Also everything felt disjointed.
Funny - I think VGF and RIV have a similar feel (especially the original villa building at VGF which feels a little more intimate). But I agree, sometimes it just depends on your first encounters with CMs and when you first get in. I love Topolino's but I had one time this year where I felt ... overlooked/ignored. I'm glad I went back more recently.

We always try to stay at recently renovated resorts so that eliminates the room condition as a factor for us.
We try too, but recently failed to consider renovation timeline delays - we stayed at BWV last summer just days before they started closing wings for refurb, and at BLT last month just before refurb also (booked at 11 months when they had suggested renovation would start in January 2024 ... d'oh!) Then again, we lucked into a VGF 1br that had recently had a soft goods refurb with new murphy beds (when the building was still getting the refurb/refresh) - top floor AND new room.
1/ Grand Floridian- Location, food, theming. As long as it isn’t Easter or Christmas.
Wow, Easter and Christmas are my favorite seasons there! Yes it's hectic, but the whole place smells like either chocolate or gingerbread.
Her main criteria:

1) Can I get to where I want by walking? Huge negative points if there is any chance of being suspended in the air with no way out.
2) How many bathrooms does it have in a 1/2 bedroom?
3) Can we easily get food the boys can eat (allergies)
4) Glam > Rustic
5) “Classy touches of Disney” > “Loud Disney”
6) West Coast = Best Coast
7) Quality of materials used in the rooms

Today I learned I am your wife. Or at least she and I agree on this list completely.
I think @AstroBlasters may have multiple wives ... 🙋‍♀️
(except I may be the Evelyn who likes the Skyliner) #iykyk #eeaao 🙃

Based on where I've stayed:

1. BWV- Love it. I love the boardwalk, the ease for transportation and proximity to both HS and Epcot. The ONLY thing I would add to BWV is one thing they took away: ESPN Sports and a more solid breakfast restaurant, although Trattoria Al Forno isn't bad by any means.

2. Grand Floridian - beautiful property

3. Beach Club - I like the proximity again to Epcot and Hollywood. I find transportation overall easier at BWV and BCV has less food options than BWV.

4. Riviera - much like GF it's a beautiful resort with great rooms. food options are good and the skyliner is nice. Still prefer BCV and BWV though because if the skyliner is down.....well yea.

5. BLT- I quite like it here. It's still below the ones above, but perhaps after the new renovation it'll move up?

6. AKV- We stayed in Kidani and I swear our walk from the lobby to our room was 2 miles. Now, I can walk all day with no problem but when we stayed here my kids were younger and oh boy was there a lot of complaining. I haven't stayed in Jambo. I do love Boma and it's easily my favorite breakfast. the biggest problem with AKV to me is the isolation, which maybe would be a positive at times?

7. SSR- This is actually our home resort due to pricing. But I don't really like it unless I have rented a car. It's extremely isolated and a huge resort. Food is not great so constantly going elsewhere. We basically use it for SAP.

those are the ones I've stayed at.

Solid list!

Wow, Easter and Christmas are my favorite seasons there! Yes it's hectic, but the whole place smells like either chocolate or gingerbread.

I agree, but the crowds outweighs the smells and sights. Having to wait 5 minutes to use lobby elevators and the monorail lines when we don’t feel like walking make those holiday seasons not our favorite times.

1. VGF-this is my absolute favorite. I know people say it's too fancy or snobbish, but I don't think so at all. The CMs in the villa building are the friendliest and most helpful I have seen. I love how you have the beautiful and bustling main lobby, but then can you can go on a quick walk down a cute, covered walkway and you have complete peace. We stayed there over Thanksgiving week and barely even saw anyone in the hallways! We had a standard view looking over the fountain and the monorail and I think it's my favorite balcony view I've had. I love the boat and the monorail. I used to love the walking path to Poly. GFC is our favorite spot for breakfast and it's so nice to just be able to stroll over.

The next few I'll rank, but I feel like they are all basically tied.

2. VGC-I've stayed here twice. Once in a one bedroom overlooking the pool and once in the coveted 6504 (the studio looking over DCA with no one above it). The one bedroom was awesome and the bathroom with the marble shower and large bathtub was amazing. The studio was ok (these rooms really need the upcoming refurb), but the view was amazing (albeit noisy), and felt like you were staying basically in a theme park. Love the beautiful lobby, love the direct entrance to DCA, love the proximity to Disneyland and Downtown Disney. Don't love how crowded the lobby gets with people not staying there. I enjoyed a massage at Tenaya Spa and Craftsman Grill has the best fruit platter ever.

3. Poly-This is just a classic. I have good memories of staying there from my childhood. I love the tiki torches lighting the paths and the Hawaiian music playing. I also had good room luck here and had the third floor end room in Tokelau, so really great views and we just used the end staircase, so we didn't have deal with the slow elevators. Some of my best memories from Disney are on that beach. Watching my kids play there when they were little. Watching the fireworks from a hammock with both of my teenagers and me all fitting in at once. Having a nice life conversation with my daughter in the middle of the day with no one around on the bench on the hill (I think it might be the smoking section). The swinging benches. The boat and monorail. Love Poly.

4.BWV-I love the location best. I like the lobby and rooms. I love being able to walk to Epcot and the Beach Club and the proximity to the skyliner. We stayed here in December 2020 in a Boardwalk view room, so we got something that is very rare-a completely quiet boardwalk. I loved it and the view is stunning. A fun memory is ordering door dash for dinner because everything closed early in 2020. We met the driver at the lobby and the ran back to our room. We got out of the elevator and kept running...and running...and running. Those are some long hallways, especially when you're hungry.

5. AKL-Kidani-I love this resort. The grounds are beautiful and I love the Jambo lobby. I love sitting in the rocking chairs outside in the middle of the day, when it's not busy. We did have a car at Kidani and that made it so much better. We were in one of the last rooms by the Pumbaa elevator, so if I had to make that walk every day I bet I wouldn't rank it so high. If you have a car this is the best resort because of the underground parking.

Last place:
6. Copper Creek and Boulder Ridge. I'm sad about it because I have always loved Wilderness Lodge, but unfortunately my last trip kind of ruined it for me. We just had bad luck with rooms, front desk CMs and other guests and this trip left me thinking I needed to take a Disney break for awhile.

Of the others I would like to try Beach Club and Riviera. Not super interested in SS, OKW or BLT.

Halloween party)

And this is why I love the OG Villa building at VGF.
We stayed there over Thanksgiving week and barely even saw anyone in the hallways! We had a standard view looking over the fountain and the monorail and I think it's my favorite balcony view I've had.
We are going over Thanksgiving for a surprise DD2 birthday. Super excited. And I love that view - we get it most of the time and we spend a lot of time on the balcony because it's just such a great view (and standard!!) Last time it was because DD2's bubble wand was malfunctioning and making big globs of bubbles. We played a version of Poohsticks to see if anyone's bubbles made it to the ground intact.
once in the coveted 6504
We've stayed there too! It's awesome and had me thinking about getting on the VGC waitlist for a little contract...

We stayed here in December 2020 in a Boardwalk view room, so we got something that is very rare-a completely quiet boardwalk.
We were close to you then! We got a top floor village green view on standard points. It was so beautiful and peaceful. DH and I both essential workers in NYC, we needed that break. I actually started crying the first time we walked into Epcot our first day.
