please don't leave your guard dogs in the front yard.

I just went for a walk around the block and suddenly surprised twice by barking dogs charging the fence. not tail waging, happy to see you dogs. teeth bared, if this fence wasn't there my mouth would be around your ankle dogs.

I think that kind of defeats the purpose of having a "guard" dog.

I was using the term guard dog as a description vs their actual function.

While are here, if you are walking them in a place where other people are trying to use the sidewalks, just stand with 'em, eh? Coming across a lot of people standing in the middle of the sidewalk while the dog decides, or stretching the leash to get 'em moving, like, where do you have to be, you don't have anywhere you need to be, so just move over and make more space for people trying to walk. And for godsakes, pick up the poop!

Thanks for having cute dogs, they love that you have time to pay attention to them now, I can tell!

Yeah - i was walking my dog ON A LEASH and someone's gigantic boxer started charging us - off leash. I have a pomeranian. I snatched him up and THANKFULLY the other dog was just a happy go lucky nut who wanted to say hi - which is fine - but i had no idea and MY dog was not amused. Finally the owner strolls outside "oh heyyyy sorry bout that..."

.....i would have rather he be behind a fence.

the fences are right up along the sidewalk. so when the dog charges the fence they are right at your feet.

the reason I posted this is because there are a lot of families with small children at home now that need to get out for a walk.

so I do think it is a problem with dogs that are not properly trained.

At least it was an actual fence as a barrier!

Many dogs will take the shock of those invisible fences, and go past the "barrier". Happened just last week on our walk.
Many owners seem to think that an invisible fence is just as sufficient as a real fence.....it's Not!!

I used to like dogs. Really the dogs aren't the problem, it is the owners. One neighbor left a dog tied to a tree all day for 7 years. It barked A LOT. They went away for a week vacation and left it tied there. Apparently our township has no noise ordinance so there was nothing to be done about it.

Neighbors across the street leave their dogs outside frequently in fenced yard. They bark at anything moving in the street. It's worst in the summer when our windows are open. Constant barking.

I walk frequently in the neighborhood, and some people leave their dogs loose in the yard to run up to you barking. I pass one guy who carries a large stick while he walks.

I think it's a fair concern. More people are using sidewalks now that more and more people are home and have limited options out of the house. While you at least now know to avoid that house, leaving barking and aggressive dogs outside to alarm passersby and other dogs isn't the most considerate thing in the world. I would guess it's happening more now that people are home and don't actually want to be in the house with the dog if it's barking.

was that your only takeaway - that it was tied up for 7 years and even when no one was around, but that it barked too much and THAT was the actual problem...

That’s not a training issue. Those dogs are protecting their owner/property.

There is a fence, it is their property. The dogs were not a danger to you. Barking is barking. Maybe you should not run so close to the fence, I have a problem with people who run so close to my house.

Sounds to me like the dogs were well contained, and no danger to anyone. I'm not a huge fan of dogs loudly barking or acting mad when I walk by a fence either, but shrug.. there isn't much you can do about it.

Being a dog owner myself, what really gets under my skin-

Fellow dog owners who are at the local park that requires dogs to be on leash.. I am sure your dog is very well trained (though him jumping on me makes me suspicious), but those leash rules are for YOU AND YOUR DOGS too. I've got two birding dogs who are incredibly well trained off lead. I'd LOVE to take them to the local nature park and let them run through the woods. But I don't see any exception to the "ALL DOGS MUST BE ON A LEASH" rule for my dogs, nor do I see an exception for your dogs. So get over yourself, leash up your dogs at the park, or find somewhere else for them to run.

Well this is a perfect opportunity to explain to the small children why they shouldn't go in people's yards!
