I think employers don't give too much information other than confirm a person worked for them because they're afraid of getting sued for a bad reference. This is the world we live in today.
This might be the official channel response but don't think more detailed information. like leaving with no notice, gets around. I belong to a number of networking groups for my profession and I will always try to find out about candidates from these groups.
"Hey Joe, I see applicant X used to work at your company. Do you remember them? If not can you poke around and find out how they were as an employee?"
Never burn bridges, even if it would be very satisfying to do so.
