Random WDW Info - I Never Knew!

This one is about EPCOT.

When you are walking from Future Land to the countries, there is water on both sides. The water on the left side, as you face the countries, is there because it was a sink hole and construction folks were unable to fill it it. This is the water that is near the Odyssey.

just read about that epcot sinkhole in "realityland" - now it's time to go to page 1 and start reading.... popcorn::

Okay....I talked with some elderly experienced cm and they told me that Tinkerbell is a woman - she's a nurse during the day. Her husband straps her in and pushes her off the rooftop every night.

The trash cans are about 17 feet apart because that is the distance a person will go before throwing the trash on the ground.

I'd be very surprised if there's only one tinkerbell at WDW. I know that DL has at least three, who take turns. When DS worked at DL, he worked with one of the tinkerbells during the day, when she was a choreographer for in-park entertainment. So it's quite possible that one of the tinkerbells is a nurse, but I'm sure there's more than one. Maybe she was the main one, the one who did it most of the time.

When Epcot was conceived, the Disney Co. asked the real corresponding countries to help. Morocco is the only country that still takes care of the Epcot "County". When work needs to be done, the King & Queen send workers.

Marty Sklar went into a little more detail about this during his seminars on October 1st. The reason that most of the countries didn't agree to sponsor their pavilions is because they are signatories to the Bureau of International Expositions Convention. The BIE is the governing body of World's Fairs, and one of the rules of the BIE Convention is that national pavilions can't operate longer than six months. Countries could have lost their BIE accreditation (thus, their ability to host and participate in World Fairs in the future) if they officially participated in Epcot's "permanent World's Fair." Just one national leader, the King of Morocco, said he didn't care and sponsored his pavilion anyway. As far as I know, Morocco is still a member of the BIE. :)

Expedition Everest is only 199 ft tall. If it had been 200 feet tall it would have required an aircraft becon that would have ruined the look of the mountain
John

I believe the same is true for Tower of Terror...it is just under the height regulations so that it doesn't have the light on top of it either...

This is true but after Walt's death it became first the telephone operators office and now is used for storage. I'd give the world to stay there!

There were plans for an apartment, but Walt died before it was built. It was never built as an apartment.
The area was first use for telephone switchboard/operators, and was used for storage for awhile. It is now a guest suite.

I've just read all 40 pages, since earlierer this afternoon and i'm wiped...this is one long thread...keep them coming!

Whew....I can't believe I read the whole thing in one sitting...without a bathroom break or something to drink. Very interesting thread.:thumbsup2

Quote from Unofficial Guide of WDW - "There are three other 'hidden' characters in Walt Disney World, though much rarer: Minnies, Goofys and Donalds. And there are even hidden Hidden Mickeys in several Disney movies, dating back to Mary Poppins..." :thumbsup2

I never knew that!

According to our KTTK guide, the refurbishment of the HM includes several hidden Jack Skellingtons.

You will never find a newspaper sold in the Magic Kingdom. It would ruin the "fantasy" by bringing in the real world. Also, no chewing gum :)

And no alcoholic beverages either.

The water in Splash Mountain is required by law to be "drinkable". You can take a handful of water and it is perfectly safe to drink it. (note: doesn't mean you should) lol

Not according to our KTTK guide. He told us that if you dropped something overboard while on Splash Mountain you wouldn't want to claim it because it would be all oil stained when it dried (definitely not drinkable). We were told that while WDW is required to have a commercial swimming pool license for Splash Mtn.

That's an urban legend. Someone asked if it was true at a Lunch with an Imagineer, and he said it wasn't true.

If it's not true about the Swan and Dolphin being mixed up then they really need to tell the CMs to stop spreading that information. We were just told that during our trip earlier this month.

At many sit down Disney restaurants, if you ask for a specific dish, the chef may well give you the recipe. At least they will at Boma. Be warned though - you might not want to know just how much heavy cream is in that yummy chowder. Also, some of the dishes are rather complicated to make.

The chowder is one of the easy ones. Made it last weekend - 1C of heavy cream and 1C of milk for 8 servings. YUMMO!

It has been so much fun reading this thread! Hopefully more trivia will come out!

I once rode a Disney buss where me and the driver stroke up a conversation. He told me that if the grass thay plant all through the world is not green enough they mix green food coloring and spray it on the grass.

REALLY!!! That is so cool. I wish I could see it done. People are always telling me how naive and gullible I am. Chalk one up for me.

I'm going to be checking this out when I stay there next May, for the first time in 15 visits to the world. I have coveted that resort since 1987, when I first rode the monorail through the lobby. I'm so excited. :cool1:

Just discovered this thread and I'm about 21 pages in and not sure if anyone has posted this commercial made by US Steel, the company that built the Contemporary:

http://www.archive.org/details/us_steel_2

I also have a commemorative book (not sure if it's from the opening but it's definitely early 70s) that shows the construction process for Magic Kingdom, the monorail and the original resorts.

Not sure if this was mentioned already (because I didn't read ALL the posts), but when you're waiting in line for Star Tours, and look up at the baskets carrying things back and forth, you'll see numbers on the bottom of items. Those are the birthdays of the people who helped Imagineer the ride. This came straight from a CM. Pretty interesting I think....

This is also the case with numbering on the pipes in areas of The Living Seas.

They used to do this to the carousel horses too, but I think they stopped. At least at DL - I saw a lot of chips the last time I was there.

For regular maintenance, the horses on the carousel at WDW are rotated out one at a time for repainting and retouching. (more than one can be out of rotation at a time, of course, if it required attention outside of the schedule) According to what I learned on a Backstage Magic tour, there are only one or two people (I think it was one, really) who do the artwork for the horses.

I read somewhere (or maybe heard on the Backstage Magic tour - I've forgotten now) that the progression from Liberty Square through Frontierland is supposed to simulate moving across the US, with HM representing the Hudson River Valley, HoP representing Philadelphia, then on to colonial Williamsburg, then on to the western state.

Not sure if that was intentional or not, but it makes sense to me.
