Random thoughts about the Wonder!

Just got off the Wonder this morning, (Vancouver to San Diego) and thought I'd share a few thoughts on the ship and crew. This was our 4th DCL cruise and 1st time on a Classic ship, so there will be some comparisons to the Fantasy. This is my experience only and I know there will be people who had the exact opposite experience, none of us are right or wrong, we've just experienced things differently.

Clayton was the CD and I really like that guy!

My other cruises were during the summer so there were a lot more school age kids and teens, this was mostly pre-schoolers. We have 2 teens and they were about the only ones on the ship.

1) For a 15 year old ship, she is in amazing condition!

2) This was a completely sold out cruise and most of the areas seemed like a ghost town. We hardly ever saw anyone in the hallways, but the atrium was always a zoo.

3) The midship elevators are a joke on this ship, they are so incredibly tiny and such an awkward shape.

4) I did not find her to be any harder or easier to navigate your way around than the Dream class ships.

5) We were in cabin 8010, we're a family of 4 and this was our first cruise in a veranda, and first time all in one cabin. I can't say enough about how great the cabin was, quiet, convenient and overall very nice. We all came to the same concessus that we are going back to 2 inside connecting cabins. The veranda isn't great enough to surpass the extra room of 2 cabins.

6) From what I've read here on the boards I really expected a lot better service from the Wonder crew. Overall I thought they were very low energy and borderline rude. The huge exception to this was our stateroom hostess Norene from Jamaica, she worked her tail off and was an absolute sweetheart, best hostess we've ever had.

7) The Dreams show was nothing short of Amazing! By far the best show I've ever seen on DCL and probably the best of all Disney shows including at the parks. I would actually sail the Wonder again just to see this show.

8) I wasn't a big fan of the way the quick service places are set up on deck 9, I prefer the set up on the Dream class ships where they're all next to each other.

9) Beach Blanket Buffet has way too many tables, it's a mess to try to walk between tables and chairs to get to the inside ones. I saw many people struggling to carry trays of food. Side note on this, why do so many parents think it's OK to let their kids run around the tables and in the walkways at the buffet and MDR's? People are trying to work and carry food, sit your kids down and make them stay there! OK, rant over, we are now resuming our previously scheduled programming.

10) Parrot Cay-loved it! The decor was great and it just seemed so open and airy.

11) Animators Pallete - throughout the dinner I was really underwhelmed with the subtle color changes and I knew at some point things would get more colorful, but I thought the shows of AP were better on the Fantasy. BUT, I had no idea about the end of the show and what would happen! I was so surprised, and I now have a new favorite AP. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, sorry I can't ruin the surprise.

12) Outlook Cafe was pretty dang nice and a great adults only retreat.

So overall as a comparison to my favorite DCL ship, the Fantasy...................... I'd have to say I still prefer the Fantasy. But, I also think this cruise had a completely different vibe because of the number of really small children AND it wasn't a Caribbean cruise atmosphere. The passenger energy was pretty low key which could have led to the crew low energy level. I would certainly sail her again if the itinerary was right.

Sorry I rambled on for so long and hope I didn't bore you.

Just my $.02

Please forgive my ignorance but what is a "quick service place"?

On Deck 9, there are quick service food places, such as Pluto's and Goofy's Galley, which serve burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and fruit. There is also Pinocchio's (pizza). On the Wonder they are spread out, whereas on the larger ships, they are all located in the same area.

Great observations!

While I had wonderful service on the Wonder, I never experienced and real difference between Wonder, Fantasy and Magic (have not been on the Dream yet) with regard to the general level of service. I think it really comes down to with whom you end up interacting during your cruise and not to which ship you are on.

Since you loved Dreams and AP, you might want to try a cruise on the Magic. I think the upgrades to AP they did on the Magic make the dinner there really special! Of course, the Magic no longer has Parrot Cay.

We were on the Wonder for the Hawaii return trip (so we also had Clayton et al.) And, like you, it was our first time on a "classic" ship. I pretty much have to agree with most of what you said about the overall vibe. I'm glad it wasn't just us!

Thanks for the review! I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed your cruise. Although, I'm sorry to hear the Wonder crew was rude to you.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that the service wasn't as good as usual. We have always had great service on the Wonder so I hope they haven't changed the crew since we were on the ship last.

If you don't mind, can you let us know what CC gifts were being used? Also, I saw a picture of the Dooney and Bourkes on the ship (new style), did they seem to have plenty of stock? I'm hoping they are still there on the 11th. Any other cool merchandise on board?

My daughter was looking at the purses so I know they had several of 2 different styles but I don't know which is the new style.

CC gift is the tote bag, but they are much much better than the previous version with the rope handles.

The canvas bag (different colors for different CC levels)? Or the burlap-looking bag?

I couldn't think of the proper word I wanted to use last night because they weren't rude. After I read your comment it came to me, they were just stoic or unemotional. Thanks for putting it in writing for me.

We did the Wonder out of Galveston back in Sept 2013. It was our 2nd ever cruise (1st one was Dream) and it was our first 7-night one. We went out of Galveston. We really LOVED it. Jimmy was the CD and he was just so energetic. We loved the shows. We had a veranda room (first time ever) and loved it. BINGO group was so much fun too. We would do this one again in a heartbeat.

That being said, after starting with Dream, and then sailing Wonder and then Magic, we are back on the Fantasy in another week. We are so excited to go back to a bigger ship, now as experienced Disney cruisers. Should be interesting. Glad you enjoyed it!

We have always had great service on the Wonder so I hope they haven't changed the crew since we were on the ship last.

The crew is constantly changing, every month (if not every week) as individual contracts expire and replacement crew is brought on board. There are always CM's that are just starting their contract (some for the first time on Disney, or any cruise line, and others that are returning), and others that will get off the ship when you do and go home after being on board for several months. Each ship tends to have something like a "corporate culture" that's individual to the ship, and since on any given sailing, most crew have been on the ship for awhile, it gets passed on to newer CM's. But these things change over time, and of course vary greatly by individual. Sometimes, I think that people let individual experiences dominate their view of the ship. For example, if you have a bad MDR team and a lackluster room host, then you might view that sailing as having a bad crew, when in fact it was just the 3 people that you were constantly dealing with that caused most of this impression.

Excellent points, SuperDry. It's funny, I just got off the Wonder from Hawaii on this last Sunday and I found the crew to be as awesome as any DCL cruise I have ever been on and this was my 10th. Granted our MDR servers seemed a bit subdued on Night 1, but over the next 9 nights they were a lot of fun and very attentive. Oleksandra, our ***'t Server was such a sweet soul. From Clayton the Cruise Director, to Pierre the F & B manager, Sasha in Palo, Miroslav in Cadillac Lounge, we found the crew outstanding. And it's always wonderful to see familiar faces like Pierre and Sasha and be greeted like old friends. :sunny:

Excellent points! Of course there will always be some bad crew, and we shouldn't discount the OP's experience with those crew.

Yes I agree with almost all of your opinions. Yes Clayton is the best cruise director that Disney has. The show dreams I don't know of it still is but at one time it was rated as the best show on all the cruise lines. Yes getting your food at beach blanket buffet sucks. It will be changed when the wonder has their next dry dock. Always someone holding up the line. I love parrot cay also.
