I can only go from personal experience. I opened my first IRA in 1979 with a week's pay. I retired on July 16, 2021 and made my first withdrawal from that IRA 7 days ago, on October 1, 2021. Allowed me to retire 2 1/2 years before full Social Security retirement age.

A group of friends and I just got back from a guys' weekend where the condos we rented were way more than that for just the weekend. We could have gone to Johnstown, had a massive rager, and burned down the house at the end, for less.

1st home purchase-$130,000 in 1991 (at just over 11% interest rates ).

We were married in 1975. For the first several months we rented a large farmhouse for $100/month. The next summer we bought it for $15,000. In 1980 we sold the house (can’t remember the price we got) and bought the farmhouse (from his parents) my husband grew up in for $55,000.
