Random Questions 10/6

People would have manners
People would be polite
People would be respectful
People would treat others as they want to be treated

ETA…..many people already do this, but if the world changed, then everyone would do this

My ex-husband is an IT guy and makes a lot of money. He also lives 2 hours away from us (to be with the woman he cheated with) so can't help with anything spur of the moment. We moved here because he has family here, but they have never once helped even when we were married & even though I've watched their kids a hundred times. I take care of our 2 special needs kids and work part-time with the school district so that my schedule can be flexible if they need me and I'm off the same days the kids are. He frequently asks me when I'm going to get a real job and what I want to be when I grow up. I'm over 50 :furious:

The condo we rented back in 1995 was AWESOME and it was a steal at $650 a month. We were there for 1 1/2 years and left it to buy our first house. If we didn’t want to start a family we would have stayed a little longer.

Our first apartment was $180 a month in 1974. We bought our first home (a new build 1400 sf brick ranch) in 1978 for $49,900. Interest rate was 9% and our payment was $434. I lived there until 2014 (DH passed in 2008) and then sold it to my son, who still owns it.

First home in 2001 for $460,000. Sold 15 years later. There has been two owners since we sold and it's now listed for $860,000.

1995 mobile bought in 1996, owners never moved in. $19,000, $400ish/month plus $150 lot rent.
2000 - 1007 sq ft ranch 2 acres in the country - $88k, $475 mortgage plus escrow was around $700
2017 - divorce and bought mobile with cash after 2 years without a home to go to except for having a bed to go and sleep in, $9000, lot rent really expensive for around here $245

1st apartment in 1980 was $230 a month.
1st home was 1986 $50,000.

First home that we bought in 2008 was a 2 bedroom 816 sq. foot house in MA for $199K. It had everything no one would ever want in a house: mold, indoor water feature (the kitchen pond abutting the house was causing flooding in the basement), a hole in the ceiling in one bedroom, squishy shower surround, etc.

So, why did we buy this house? Underneath the mess, there were stronge bones that held it all together. Hardwood floors were a nice bonus, though stained, easy enough to refinish.

We've since completely remodeled the house ourselves and the inside doesn't resemble the old house at all.

The current estimated value is $420K.

I bought a condo when I was 22 and I think I paid $75,000. Not sure what they are going for now in that complex. I remember when my parents were selling my childhood home and I saw some paperwork on the house, they paid $10,000 for a 3 bdrm tudor style house in 1967.

My first apartment was $440 and included utilities in 2009. It was a half step above being homeless.

Since then, I've rented at $1,200 for a few months and then we started buying.

Bought for $145,000, sold for $168,000
Bought for $197,500, sold for $211,500
Bought for $357,500, sold for $370,000
Bought for $500,000
:( Not much margin left in those after commissions. Real estate goes like that sometimes. We’re just coming out of a major 4-year downturn in the market here too. We bought high in 2014 and would have a hard time breaking even if we had to sell right now.

DH & I shared a bunch of apartments with roommates when we were dating. We lived in Orlando and were WDW cast members, and I can absolutely tell you that the price of renting does not in any way reflect the thousands of people working lower wage jobs at theme parks in tourist attractions. It's incredibly hard to live without roommates or others who can share the cost.

We live in Upstate NY now:
First 1 BR/1BA apartment was $545 in 2012. Looks like it's renting for $675 now.
Bought a small 2BR/1BA ranch with 2 acres in 2014. Paid $108,500. Zillow has it valued at $165,600 (but I take that with a grain of salt)

1979 2 bedroom 1/2 acre $36000 present house we built in 1995 fro $110,000 on 3 acres paid $18,000 now worth $750,00 or more --just crazy

I've thought about this often. The list always comes down to:

Dave Grohl and his wife
Tom Brokaw and his wife

The dinner conversation would be so interesting. It's not about quantity, but quality.
