"raining" in the Superdome

Strange sounds in the Superdome and "raining" in the dome--the waterproof layer might be "slapping" and not holding up. No "open sky"--but definitely a giving way of the protective means for the water to be kept out.

Ed Reams on the phone with channel 16 on MSNBC reporting this. He feels water on his head, like if standing outside in a sprinkling of rain. All just occurred as he was talking on the phone. Occurring only in one corner of the superdome at this time.

A possible shifting of people--but no imminent danger. Definitely not good at all. They will put people under the stands if necessary.

Everyone is calm right now.

(and between the time I posted on the other thread and this minute or two later--he says it now feels like a thunderstorm about ready to explode with rain).

Brian Williams from NBC just reported live at 8:12 am CST that they can see roof panels raising up about 1 foot with the wind and they can see daylight thru the openings. He said they moved people around who were uner the area where the roof seems to be failing, but the inside of the superdome feels very humid like the air is filled with a light mist. He said they are not thinking of evacuation - the authorities say there are many places inside the superrdome they can move to if needed.

I just heard that they are moving everyone to the endzones where they can be more protected. The reporter was inside the Superdome and said everyone was soaking wet and he could tell tensions are rising. It sounds like a recipe for disaster. I just pray that the building somehow holds up and that people can remain calm.

I just saw pictures of the holes in the roof of the superdome. It looked like three or four holes. I would estimate based on how high it was from where he took the picture that the holes are at least a couple of feet across. If the winds continue, I would suspect those holes will grow much larger as the winds funnel in and under.

This is a major concern now. I hope & pray that the roof situation doesn't get any worse than leaky.

Wasn't it supposed to be able to withstand 200 mph winds? Yikes! Very scary!

Yes, but not debris being driven into it at 200mph :(

Ahhhh yes I didn't think of that.

I heard an interview with a man that helped design the Superdome. He said that it could withstand winds of 150 mph in the 60's when it was built. He said no one had any real idea of how it would hold up 30 years later.

From an engineering perspective, I think that the Superdome has held up spectacularly. Honestly, I was quite unsure of whether or not it would withstand the winds/wind driven debris associated with this storm. To think that it could have made it through the storm with no breaches was unlikely, though.

And another thing--unless total catastrophic failure of the structure.....the thousands in it are much safer than in their homes.

Just posted on the other thread---120 rescue phone calls received and they can't even begin rescuing these people until 2ish central time. That's 3 hours to go.

Can you imagine if they had to rescue thousands?

I'm saying a prayer for all of the firefighters, EMT, Police, rescue workers, hospital workers, etc who all stayed behind to help out the public during this crisis and who will be rescuing and treating these people in the days to come........Thank god for those who called 911 that someone actually is there to answer their phone calls.

In some places they are not--911 is being rerouted..I think Jefferson Parish, was it--they actually had to shut down 911 b/c the building they are housed in could only withstand 80mph.

(I could have the parish wrong--it is to the north of NOLA on the West Bank).

Here's something I hadn't thought about - dealing with the health emergencies that the people in the dome experience.

Gen. Ralph Lupin, who commands the 550 National Guard troops in the Dome, said, “We’ve got sick babies, sick old people and everything in between. We’re seen strokes, chest pain, diabetes patients passing out, seizures, people without medicine, people with the wrong medicine. It’s been busy.”

It does sound like, despite the leaks, that the structure will protect them.

Now the video makes a lot more sense.

200 people who weren't here need help and it includes 20 cops who were going to be relief duty after the storm--they were riding it out at home. :earseek: . There are bodies floating (according to wwl)
