So my girlfriend and I recently dined at the Animal Kingdom's Rainforest Cafe. Our server was excellent and entertained yet did not overstay his welcome at our table. Well done. Food was fantastic - I went for the Primal Steak and my girlfriend the Planet Earth Pasta. So where's the outrage? Well it came from dessert. For MONTHS i've been bragging about the Volcano dessert and the shouting that goes on from the server once they deliver it to you. It's literally all she talked about that day was how excited for her volcano she was. So we went to order it and our waiter said that he "could not serve it to us" because it's meant for 3 people and we were only 2. Like ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Take my damn money, and give me my dessert. It's that simple, idc how many people it's meant for. If I'm a paying customer, you're going to tell me I can't buy an item from the menu? She was heartbroken, and I know it's just dessert but it's a simple thing that was going to make my girlfriend smile and we were denied. I was completely appalled and asked to speak to the manager, who told us it's company policy and that he was sorry. Never going back there again. /endrant

That's so odd given that it is a dessert and not an alcoholic beverage. I'd be pissed too.

Were you on the dining plan?
They would not let you give them cash to buy a dessert?

Maybe they need to have a smaller version that is more portion size appropriate for fewer guests. From what I can find the menu states "Enough for 3 or more" which does not seem to indicate you must have 3 people to order.

We were on the dining plan and our waiter at TRex and waitress at Rainforest Cafe AK both explained there were certain deserts that were only available for groups of 2, 3, 4, or larger, etc. However, they did explain this at the beginning of the meal when taking drink orders and asking if we would be using a dining plan. I assume this is a cost control measure to keep people from ordering the most expensive/popular thing only to take a couple of bites (not that that was the intention of the OP). If it is strictly based on if you're using a dining plan, I wonder if you could pay the bill and then order the desert on a separate ticket that you pay out of pocket for?

Yes, obviously on the DDP, and the sparkling volcano does require 3 DDP dessert credits.

If the OP had paid OOP for the dessert, it would have been no problem whatsoever.

We ran into the same thing at T-Rex a few years back with the chocolate extinction. We are a family of 3, and it requires 4 dessert credits from the DDP.

If you are a cash-paying customer, you can by any menu item, but
1) This is a "3-coupon" DDP dessert.
2) If you were paying DDP, they do not make enough DDP reimbursement to cover the cost and profit of the item.
3) They deserve to make a profit, so I see nothing wrong here.
4) If you were paying OOP, then they made a major error.

He (OP) does say "take my money" and "buying an item" so I figured he was paying OOP. If its the dining plan I know its different. I am intrigued by this special 3 credit dessert. Must go check it out and drool...

I have ordered this in Ft Lauderdale with 2 people no problem. The dining plan is the only way that the location in WDW could have a different policy.

OP- did the server explain that you could pay for it with cash? I was on the DDP last time but there was certain items that I paid oop when I wanted them.

I think it's important to note that you can't simply "pay the difference" one a multi-credit item. It's all-or-nothing. I assume the "take my money" comment was in reference to paying a partial amount. If the restaurant refused to sell you the dessert at full price, there was a much bigger misunderstanding.

were you on a dining plan?
Yes we were on the dining plan, BUT I did ask if we could just pay separately with cash and he still said there was nothing he could do. I've never heard of any restaurant in America having a policy like this. If I want an item you are offering to customers, how dare you tell me I can't have it based on the idea that two people shouldn't be able to eat that much food. Seriously pissed and I'm emailing the place later today.

It doesn't have anything to do with how much two people can eat.
