Ragland Road: Lousy management

I had dinner at Ragland Road on Sunday, 10/30. The food was great, the service was excellent, HOWEVER, the manager was lacking.

I chose to go here for the Irish food, ambiance, entertainment and value as a Disney Dining Experience new member. I called on Saturday afternoon for an 8 PM reservation (or best available). WDW Dining told me that there were plenty of reservations available, but when we got to the end of the process the person said that Ragland Road does not accept same day reservations. No Problem, they have entertainment 7 days per week, so I made it for Sunday at 8:00 PM. I checked to make sure that they were part of DDE and I was told that they were (when I picked up my temporary card on Thursday I was given the most up to date listing of participating restaurants and Ragland Road was on it). Armed with all this information I made a reservation for the Flying Fish for Saturday night and was happy with that choice and looking forward to Sunday.

On Sunday we arrived at Ragland Road at 7:45 for our 8:00 PM ADR. The place was empty and we were able to walk right in. I commented to the hostess that it must have been busy last night and she said no, it was quiet. Oh well, we could have taken our chances and gone Saturday but we chose not to wait in what we thought would be lines (Saturday night at PI).

The waitress was excellent. She had been well trained and knew the menu and the history of the restaurant. She was attentive and helpful. The food was excellent (more about that later). When the bill came it was very reasonable. I paid with my room charge and my DDE card. The waitress informed me that she did not think that they accept DDE. I told her that I was assured by Disney Dining that they do. She went to check for us and came back saying that the manager said that they don't. I had my listing from Disney Dining Experience with me and showed it to our waitress and asked her to show it to the manager. The manager had the waitress tell us that it was a misprint. At this point I asked to speak to the manager.

The manager came to our table and told us that she would give us a 20% cast member discount on the food but not the beverages (not a big deal, 2 drinks and a beer). I informed her that WDW dining assured us that their computer shows that they do accept DDE, that our reservation was made with a note that we would be using DDE and that the most up to date listing for Disney Dining Experience showed that they accept it. She said it was a misprint and she could not honor the beverage aspect of DDE. I explained that I felt that this was very deceptive and should be corrected because it caused a bad feeling in an otherwise very nice restaurant. I also mentioned that I had tried to get a reservation for Saturday but that WDW dining had in their computer that they don't take same day reservations. She told me that they do take same day reservations, but not from Disney. If I had called up or gone to their web site they would have taken the reservation. When asked how I was to know this she had no answer. When also asked why there was no entertainment there on Sunday, she said that they had given the band the night off.

All in all I felt that the experience was tarnished by the policies adopted by Ragland Road after it opened. I have been following the Ragland Road story for a while; I visited the web site early on and saw that it was to have entertainment 7 nights a week. That it would accept the DDE card (this has now been removed). I'm not sure if the restaurant has overextended itself and is not honoring prior commitments or what (I will contact the management and find out). It has great food a very nice atmosphere and nice staff. But there are many more restaurants in the downtown Disney area that do honor the DDE card and will be getting my business.

We ate there a few days before their grand opening and had a similar experience that left a "bad taste" (so to speak) after an otherwise nice meal.

When I asked our waitress if they accepted Disney Dining Experience, Annual Pass or DVC she exclaimed "Oh no, we don't need to provide any of those discounts. We wouldn't even take the Disney room card if they didn't force us too. Those are such a pain in the neck." They hadn't even officially opened yet and she had the attitude that they are SO successful and SO popular that they have no need to provide discounts.

I was pretty sure that I had read that DDE was accepted at Raglan Road but wasn't positive so I didn't push it. But the fact that she was so snooty about Disney tourists -- and she had only worked a few days (if that) so far --bothered me. I said to her, "but if it weren't for Disney tourists and being able to charge to their room, you wouldn't be here." She didn't seem to understand what I was getting at and she said "Oh they'd come alright. They'd just use their credit card -- all room charges go right on a credit card eventually anyway." She obviously didn't understand why vacationers like to consolidate all their charges on one bill (or the myriad of other reasons someone might want to charge to their room).

At the end of the meal when I gave her my room card to charge she said "You're killing me!" The tone was joking but I'm sure she was serious. I asked why it was such a big deal and she replied that they have to use another machine/computer to process room charges and they take extra time.

I wanted to write on my server's check, "Don't dis the hand that feeds you" but I held back.

If any staff from Raglan Road reads this, may I kindly suggest that you explain to staff the importance of Disney customers to the existence of the restaurant! This would seem obvious since it is located inside Disney World but I guess not. We are returning to WDW is December and, as much as I enjoyed the meal itself at Raglan Road, we won't be back. Perhaps in a few years after the "newness" of the restaurant has worn off and customers aren't so easy to come by, the folks at Raglan Road will better appreciate the Disney Guest and perhaps even accept one of Disney's discount cards!

I agree with you totally. The attitude is very anti-disney. That may be fine if your off site, but they chose to be on site at Pleasure Island. They definately treat Disney guests as second class citizens, not allowing them to make reservations the same day unless they call them separetly is bad business. Denying that you signed up for DDE is also bad business.

DDE is basically a marketing tool. For the cost of 20% off of food and drink you get advertising for people who frequent Disney more than once a year (only annual pass holders and Florida residents can buy into DDE and they probally go more often than others) and they choose to spend their dollars in your shop. Not honoring DDE after signing up for it is akin to bait and switch. A practice outlawed in every state. I'm not sure what the commitment is when you open in Downtown Disney, but I would assume that it's some concession to Disney guests. The attitude of the staff was that I was lucky that they accepted the Disney Room Charge. My attitude was that they were lucky that I accepted them to receive my dollars for dinner that night.

The great thing about Disney is that I can travel around without my wallet and put everything on my room. I have a single bill, if the card is lost or stolen I'm not responsible. I think of Disney as a cruise ship on land. I also have many choices of cuisine, price, and entertainment, along with discounts. Ragland Road excelled in cusine and price but entertainment and discounts were lacking. Every restaurant that I went to at Disney lived up to it's commitment to the consumer, except Ragland Road. For a new establishment to cause such consternation is not good.

That's disappointing about the DDE card. Now that I have one, my sit-down restaurant choices are governed by it. 20% is nothing to sneeze at and there are plenty of very good restauants that accept it that I can gladly skip those that do not.

Well that stinks. We're flying down Thu. night and had planned on trying Raglan Road now not so sure if it's worth the effort - I was really looking forward to it! but now I believe we'd have more fun just hanging out at the Adventurer's Club! LOL

Maybe if we all call RR direct for reservation & at the end ask about DDE, when they tell us they don't participate we can cancel the ressie. It would send the message loud & clear--don't mistreat Disney Tourist. If I was the mgr of RR & I started getting cancellations b/c I stopped taking DDE I'd rethink my policy before I was out of a job.

Even though I had read mixed reviews of the food and service at Raglan Road, I was still planning to check it out in December. I can forgive a new restaurant that is working out kinks in the kitchen and in training wait staff. What I can't forgive so easily is an anti-Disney attitude from an establishment on Disney property. I think I'll skip Raglan Road after all...

I'm still planning on going. We have our handy $50 gift certificate, so I'm not going to let it go to waste. :goodvibes

As long as the food and service is good, I'll be happy. I am not planning on using any discounts. Just expecting some tasty Irish food in a fun atmosphere.

I won't let a few bad reviews keep me from going! I've also read many good reviews - and seen some photos of the restaurant and food, so that helps.

I found the food to be excellent, the service also excellent. I was disappointed with no entertainment when advertised, not honoring commitments made to DDE and a restrictive reservation policy directed at Disney guests. With so many choices of excellent restaurants this is one that I would not choose again due to it's policy ( and I'm of Irish heritage, imaging how disappointed I was).
All that said, I can't disagree that if you paid $25 for a $50 certificate then you should go and get your moneys worth (but be careful, another thread alluded to problems with the certificates).

Thanks. :wizard: I do think that the DDE management needs to remedy the situation and let guests know RR isn't accepting the discounts - and update the DDE information being passed out to guests.

I do have to wonder after the Dining Plan participating restaurant fiasco early in January whether Disney added them without making sure it was official/contracted. Many of the Epcot non-Disney owned restaurants were originally on the plan, then they weren't, then they finally (and thankfully) agreed to participate. Way confusing...

Hopefully the server who was not Disney guest friendly will be retrained. I would definitely let Disney know that you were treated like that. While RR isn't owned by Disney, it can't hurt to let them know.

Thanks again.

Jack, can you lead me to that thread. We are going, and using a certificate this Saturday and I'd like to read the thread your are talking about.

Thank you Betsy! I have an answer for that. Don't show the certificate until you have a reciept. I don't see any need to notify them what my means of payment will be in advance.

Thanks again for the speedy link. I will be ready now.

My input--- RR is in PI but you can't walk in with your drinks, and you can't leave with your drink that you purchase there. I thought that was a little wierd. :confused3

All I have to say is ----- YEAH!!! Somebody had the same EXACT experience as we did and were treated as poorly as we were! I know that sounds strange, but when I politely explained what happened to us on another Raglan Road thread, I was flamed like it was my fault. My husband has 20+ years restaurant experience, and we've never had such a bad experience. The manager was argumentative with us when we ate there 10/21 about the DDE - and then gave us his 20% cast member discount like he was doing us a favor. He did do us a favor - we'll NEVER eat there again. What a disappointment!

If you're referring to the thread I think you are, I asked a question (whether you asked for a manager) and offered a suggestion (verifying a discount before ordering). I definitely don't believe I flamed you, but I offer my apologies if you took it that way. I wasn't implying that it was your fault.

As to the manager offering a 20% cast member discount since they are not currently offering the DDE discount, IMHO that was nice of him to do so.

Just because someone offers a differing opinion doesn't mean they're flaming you. :grouphug:

I am thinking out loud here, why would I patronize a restaurant that had that attitude about Disney etc..

I was thinking, however, wouldn't it be nice to try something different.. I do have the Disney Dining experience card as well and on our last visit to WDW, we were informed one of our fave restaurants in Epcot, Teppanyaki, did not honor the card. We did not eat there, there are plenty of other places that took the card that we paid for and those are the ones we will patronize..

What an awful way to start a new restaurant with that kind of attitude. If the word gets out, people will not go there.

I am sorry that some of you had a bad experience there.......

Just to share what I do when I'm dinning and am really interested in good service. (not that I don't want good service all the time but sometimes it's more important) I do this for buisness meetings, important family dinners, etc.

I tell my wait person up front that I tip 30% for good service but take away 5% each time service fails. I do this quick and with a smile on my face. I have found that it always helps greatly. In the end, I get better service than most and don't mind paying extra for it at times like Disney.

Us too. We always eat at Teppanyaki for New Year's Eve dinner but we are at Rose and Crown instead this year. We're a party of 7 (6 adults and 1 child) and 20% off is a big chunk of change for us.

Oh great!! Not only are we worried about the price increase at CRT and the menu cuts at the dinner, but now we have to worry about some of the ADR'S we've made NOT accepting our DDE cards!!!! :( It's just a good thing that we have this dis-board to help each other out!! At least we know what to expect when we get there!!! WDWBetsy, your vacation is almost here!! It made my tummy do a flip flop when I saw that!!! I have awhile to wait but I'll be a nervous wreck when I'm that close!!!! :teeth:
