Raglan Road gave my nut allergic son almonds

WOW! The same thing happened to us in December. We were dining with our nephew and when they gave us the dessert, right away he said he didn't like it (but had taken one bite). We had to use the epipen on him. It was so scary. My other nephew is allergic as well and while his breathing didn't alter, he did throw up.

We immediately told the hostess and she was very rude. She could care less and told us that its must be what we gave him for lunch!!!!!

Wow - was this Raglan Road? Was it the same dessert (a sort of fruit crumble)?

I would think if they did this to someone in December - and I'm sure you had to call 911 and have an ambulance after giving the Epi-pen - they would have been extra careful after that. Did you post about it here?

Yes it was the fruit thing. When it came, it had a glaze on it and we questioned it but at the time they just said it was fruit. We insisted it looked like a glaze but they insisted it wasn't. Well two seconds later as we are discussing this, the kids got sick (they ate it as 6 adults are talking to the waiter, yes we felt stupid for not paying attention!!!!!).

It was handled horribly. Yes, we did call Disney and send a letter. Not much was done. But we were told the manager would have a talking to. We explained that we ate at 7 restaurants and that was the only one that didn't send out a chef!!!! Every other one did! Strange!

Was there a nut ingredient in the glaze or was it almonds? In this crumble dessert I don't remember a glaze but there were sliced up almonds in there - a bit hard to see with the oats and I didn't notice them until he'd said he didn't like it and didn't want anymore of it.

Was 911 called to the restaurant then? I mean - I just find it unbelievable they could do the same thing TWICE - especially if someone had an anaphylactic reaction right there in their restaurant to the same dessert - and they did this again?

I'd really appreciate more details if you are willing to share them via PM or email if you prefer - cause I'm speechless. I was upset before but if this is the same restaurant and same dessert - and same NUT - and they knew - I'm past upset....

Could you clarify what his allergy is?
i’m not understanding if the problem was that it had a glaze and there was something in the glaze that he was allergic to or if you felt there were nuts being hidden by a glaze.

Their allergy is to tree nuts and peanuts.

We feel that there was something in the glaze as they told us that they weren't supposed to have the glaze and would leave it off. When they brought it over, we thought it looked like glaze on the fruit and we told them they made a mistake. Our waiter was adamant that there was no glaze on there. We insisted on seeing teh chef, who came out and told us there was no glaze on there. In the meantime, the boys boy ate some fruit and immediately had reactions!

Hmm...there was no glaze on this dessert - it had a crumble top and is described here:

Strawberry & Apple Crumble - fFresh strawberries and apples in a tart with berry compote and vanilla bean ice cream

They told us the ice cream was "may contain" so his didn't have ice cream on it. There was some whipped cream on the side of the plate however - the dessert was in a bowl.

Perhaps this was a different dessert? Did you ever figure out what nut was in the glaze that caused the reaction?

Was an ambulance crew called to the restaurant?

If it was a clear glaze, I’m not sure what was in it that would cause an allergy. Clear glazes are usually sugar and water or possibly juice.
If it was a white glaze, I wonder if it was flavored with almond extract? (Depending on what resource you look at , some call almond a tree nut, but others don’t since the family it is in is related to fruits like apple, pear, peach, cherry, plum, nectarine, apricot, and strawberry.).

Selket I sent you a private message, did you get it?

Oops - sorry - I just saw it. I'll PM you back.

I think the dessert was different - a fruit dish with a honey drizzle on it. Of course their menu could have changed too!

Anyway - I'll PM you! I appreciate the info - it just really amazes me that twice this restaurant has made such a mistake (at least twice in less than a year). :sad2:

We just returned from Disney last week and had a similar, but worse, experience. Not to discount the original poster's situation. My daughter is also 9, and had 1 bite of a cookie there. Our server did not have a manager or chef speak to us, her allergy was listed in our reservation, as well as me asking about the oil her fries were cooked in (soy), and the cookies. We went from the restaurant back to our resort where my daughter violently vomited for 12 hours! I got enough Benadryl into her system that I didn't have to inject her, but that was our first night and after that she wanted to come home. She was afraid to eat at the other restaurants, and didn't have the energy to have any fun. Our entire vacation was ruined by Raglan Road. When I spoke to the manager there the words were apologetic, but the tone of voice was saying "don't sue me." He didn't honestly care about almost killing my child. Thank you to those that posted the contact info for the owners, as that is what I Google searched to get to this page. I have just emailed them, and have been in contact with Disney's Guest Services who are conducting an investigation.
