In case anybody would like to know....I asked about the going cash rate for our DVC room we had this past weekend: Check in on Sept 4, check out on Sept 7.

We stayed at AKL Jambo House on the fifth floor (5575), Savanna view. The Cash rate was $461 and change per night (include taxes and such, and I'm guessing it is more like $540 per night).

I heard that I and I felt a lot better about buying into the DVC this past March! Who pays that much for these rooms??????

How big was your room??? 2 bedroom?

Wow ... Completely left that out. We stayed in a Studio! My wife and I went on a No Kids vacation! Didn't tell our kids till we gave them their Mickey Mouse T-Shirts tonight that we even went. Nobody seemed mad, but hey the kids are 5, 2, and 1.

That does sound fun! We took DS, 7, with us, BUT we had a two bedroom AND we used the kids club for him three nights (shhhh! don't tell that we are such bad parents we actually use a kids club to spend some evenings alone....)

Kids club is $11/hour and DVC members get a 10% discount, I believe.

I was at Kidani front desk 3 weeks ago and actually saw a man who was paying rack rate--and he was mad!

He was complaining and annoyed because he hadn't gotten room cleaning and toiletries that day and mousekeeping had told him that club members didn't get them every day. He was asking "what is this Disney club thing, I'm not a member, I'm staying at an extremely expensive hotel and I don't even get shampoo?!"

My kids always joke about the DVC best kept secret slogan saying that Disney doesn't know how to keep a secret but this guy had clearly never heard of DVC. I was wondering how anyone could book at Kidani and not even know about DVC and out of curiosity went to look at the Disney website--when I looked at the resort options I saw how it could have happened, there are pages that don't say anything about ownership/membership. Obviously they want to bring in some cash reservations and make it easy for people who aren't members to book.

Looking at rack rates makes me so happy to be staying on points!

When we book our unit using points we always go into the WDW site and check how much the same room would cost. It's so easy that way to see how you can recover your initial payment within 3 to 6 trips!

I wanted to include more information last night, but wasn't thinking about it at the time.

In 2011 we are planning a BIG vacation for our family (using 3 years worth of points)...bring about 15 people to stay at Disney. So for curiosity sake, I asked the DVC host about rack rates for BLT in March of 2010 (sure it is year sooner, but it at least gives me an idea of the cost).

All rates are for March 2010
BLT 3 Bedroom Villa, MK View: $2235 / night
BLT Studio, MK View: $590 / night

Right now we are thinking about taking the family to Kidani instead, as we think it suites the kids better....but I can book BLT at 11 months, we'll see what is available at Kidani for 7 months.

Glad I stay on points!!!!

I believe that "cash" paying customers do get daily maid service so I can understand his irritation.

We love our DVC and know that it has paid for itself many times over.

They do get mousekeeping, I was surprised that the front desk CM didn't immediately say so since he very clearly wasn't a member--they said they had to go in the back to look him up on the computer so he was stewing for a bit. Maybe they needed to check that he wasn't renting points but then he wouldn't have made that remark about it being an extremely expensive hotel?

I just looked it up, and for our Standard Studio at BLT for June of next year, it is $440/night!

I love DVC! Not only are we going for 10 days then, but I also have a plan for March for 4 nights and possibly another December trip!

If we paid cash for those rooms, I would not be able to take 3 trips in 1 use year... or even stay there at all!

Yup - same here. And it just blows me away that I used to pay that much (well, not *that* much, but close). Can you imagine how we'll feel in 10 years when the Pop is renting out for $300/night, and BLT is renting out at $800/night and we'll still be using our same little old points for our accommodations? YIPEE!

For a somewhat more balanced comparison, compare points to DVC rental stays at $10/point.

I know you're exaggerating, but this isn't at all likely. The "basic" WDW on-property room has hovered below $100/nt since the early/mid-90s. To be fair, it used to be Caribbean Beach at that price point, and now it's Pop/AS.

We're burning two years worth of points to take my parents to WDW for spring break next year. The rack rate cost of our accommodations would be almost $6000 for 5 nights. When I figured out the "actual" per point cost (buy-in and estimated 2010/2011 MF's), our trip is only "costing" us about $1400 for the rooms!

True, we would not be staying in a 2BR at Kidani village over Easter if we were paying cash. We would be in two standard rooms at Pop Century, but that would still be more than $1400.

I love my DVC.

Not much of an exageration at all in my opinion.

15 years ago, we stayed at these rates in the fall:

Moderates: $99 per night ($109 with better view)
Deluxe (CR, PR): $180-250 per night depending on view

The "Magic Kingdom Club" was available to many people which automatically gave seasonal discounts of 0, 10, 20, or 30% depending on time of year.

I just ran room only prices and found:

Moderate: $219 per night

Deluxe: $348 - 473 per night

SSR Studios: $511 per night
SSR One Bedrooms: $655 per night

Prices doubled in 15 years... will be interesting to see what we have in another 15 years....

I imagine it is rare that cash guests are paying rack rate. WDW was giving people FREE upgrades from Values to one bedroom units at SSR. They run studios at 40% off for the general public - you don't need a PIN code or anything.

It is kind of like department store shopping. There may be one or 2 people who paid "full price" for an item, but most likely everybody who bought one got some sort of a discount.

Obviously this is more true for some properties than for others.

I still think buying DVC was a good deal for us.

We used Simba's Cubhouse one night several weeks ago when we were there! Our boys loved it - the oldest is 12 so he was at the max. age and he still had fun . If I didn't have 3 to pay for I would have definitely used it more often.

OP, for our recent trip we had a 1BR concierge villa and if I remember correctly the rack rate was just under $750.00/night!! (plus tax!). Makes you appreciate DVC

We were staying at BCV last Christmas (2 nights on CASH!! a studio which was $500/night, crazy I know) and we were upgraded to a 2 BR. The rack rate for that 2 BR at Christmas was $1175!

If we'd paid cash for our 2-bedroom room last week at Jambo, it would have been at least $4,000, and that's with the "deals" they are offering.
