don't want their lives to be better?

Everyone WANTS their life to be better. Giving the effort it takes to better yourself is how you do it.

I've been on welfare.

Thats unfortunate. Im sorry that you had to grow up this way, but Im delighted that you are out of the system and have bettered your self.

And you presume you have the right to judge?

As long as I pay taxes, I do have the right to judge where my money goes.

I never did say that people on wellfare are "horrible". I said that as long as the government is giving people money, food and shelter, they have absolutly no right to complain about it. The real complaining would start when programs like wellfare are cut.

I've been on welfare. Did you know that? When I was little. Its not that my mother didn't want to make it better. Its that she had no other choice.

Have you ever been starving? So bad it hurts? I HAVE. Because my father left and my mother couldn't afford to buy food. I've been for a week without anything to eat.

And you presume you have the right to judge?

Was my mother just a horrible mother because she couldn't make enough money to pay all the bills and feed us too? Was she just a horrible woman because she wasn't willing to take us to a shelter to live homeless rather than trying to keep it together by being on welfare?

Until you've been through it, you can't know what its like.

Well I guess I can judge then. I was born to a 10th grade drop out when she was 17. One year later she had my brother. She had no skills, no job and two children before she was 20. I slept in the same bed as my brother until I was 5 years old. The bed was given to us. At five another bed was given to us and we slept seperately. We lived in some horrible places. I do know what poverty is. I wore used clothes to school and I had to buy my own clothes from the time I was 13. My father was also a teenager when I was born. He did finish high school, but his future was altered.

I feel sorry that you were poor, but I was poor too. I am now one of the people who you keep tell that I am so lucky I have a home, car..... Well guess what, nobody gave me any of it. I worked hard to get out of poverty and get to where I am.

DH and I also spend our own money to help those poorer than us, since I know how hard it is. Many times we have paid a bill and they never knew who did.

Oh and yes my little sister (she was born later) does live in poverty right now. I am doing all I can to help her. DH and I have even paid some of her college bills (tuition, books, fees, new transmission for her car so she could get to school, rent, food, dr bill and so on). And to do this we gave up saving for our future. If all goes well she will have her degree in the spring. We expect none of the money back and will refuse it if she offers. We did it because it was the right thing to do.

I am getting a little tired of some on these threads who keep calling me uncaring, cold and not having a GED just to name a few. I personally think the welfare system as it exists makes it too easy not to get moving on.

Poverty can be beat, but you need to want it more than other material thing.

This is quite possibly the dumbest thing Ive ever heard....

I dont care to comment

Actually, I do. Who do you think pays for all the "food, water, shelter, blankets"?? ITS YOUR TAX DOLLARS GOING TO FEMA AND OTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCIES!!! You are paying for it, and don't beleve anyother thing you hear. This country was founded on one basic belief. That beleif was that every citizen has religious freedom and the choice to lead a life on their own, AS LONG AS IT DOESEN'T INFRINGE ON ANOTHERS RIGHTS!! I DON'T THINK I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMEONE WHO DOESEN'T EVEN BELONG IN THIS COUNTRY!!!!!

The government agencies pay for a lot of things. Just because you may not be currently enrolled in public school, should you be exempt from taxes? Or because you dont have a car, should you not pay for road improvements? How about that war in Iraq, paying to blow up other countries, what about infringing on others rights there?

This country was founded by immigrants, and unless you are a Native American, I dont see how you think you belong in this country any more than a newly arrived immigrant does. Your family immigrated here as well. Out of curiousity, who in your mind does 'belong' in this country? Maybe we could just turn all the land back over to the people who originally owned this country. After all, most of us dont really 'belong' here.

And yes, tax money does go towards FEMA, why else do you think so many people are upset it is being ran by someone so incompetent?

:confused3

Weather you agree with the war, or not, don't downgrade the millitary for it. These guys make jack squat, and put their a*s on the line for you and me, so don't go their.
QUOTE]

I'm sorry - but I will go there. I supported our troops going to Afghanistan to bomb the terrorist training camps. I believed our President when he said we were in imminent danger and needed to invade Iraq. HE and his administration, and the congress who believed their lies, put the a*s of our men and women on the line. Then when the WMDs were not found, the President and his administration decided we would bring democracy to Iraq. All it has done is create more hatred and more terrorists wanting to harm us. How many people have to die and be maimed - both troops and civilians? We never hear about the civilians, do we?

I admire all our troops for risking their lives for our country - but I expect them to only have to do it for the right reasons, not misinformed ones. I can support the troops, but I don't have to support the war.

Well put Betsy.

And yes, poverty can be beat. I did it. But I also had other things going for me. Like a high school eduction.

I even worked my way through my last two years of high school and paid my way through it myself. My mother couldn't do it.

Some presume too much. Obviously, some don't know what having litterally nothing and growing up with the idea that you can't ever be anything will do to a person.

I mean no disrespect at all, and I'm sorry you had a rough life, but here is very a recent post you made, so I don't understand it when you say "poverty can be beat. I did it":

Quote from Totalia's recent post on another thread:

"I would donate if I could. I have $40 in my bank account and I just started a new job so won't be receiving my first paycheck for another two weeks. If I sold everything I owned right now, I'd get about $200 because what I own is an old broken VCR, a cheap DVD player, a small television set, and my clothing as well as a lamp. I don't even own the bed I sleep in.

Griping is about all I can do right now. And believe me, if I could, I'd be giving thousands to my fiance to help him recover from the loss of his entire life in Katrina.

If I could help, I would. I can't help and I'm very upset with what I've been seeing. The best I can do is vent.

You may not like it, but thats just the way it is."

There are other similar posts made by you, as well, such as you wedding budget....

I'm not sure your idea of poverty is the same as mine.

Hmm...

Sounds like conflicting intrests as far as Katrina relief funding.....

Maybe I wasn't "to quick to judge"....
