Im wondering why I see the NAACP Representives on TV talking about how African Americans aren't getting the same treatment as Caucasions would be! This is the biggest "acusation" Ive ever heard! Next time a community of large Caucasion population is in trouble, they should blame the minority's for not giving them proper care and treatment...

Uh oh, you might as well put on a flame-retardant suit now :cool1:

To me, I personally dispise those Al Sharpton-types who encourage racism. I do believe FEMA screwed up, but I can't believe it's due to race. New Orleans is not completely populated by African Americans anyway, so to say that this is a black/white issue is rediculous.

Ignorance in the form of 5 letters ;)

Also, in case you didn't know... "refugee" is a racist term!
NEW YORK - What do you call people who have been driven from their homes with only the clothes on their backs, unsure if they will ever be able to return, and forced to build a new life in a strange place? News organizations are struggling for the right word.

Many, including The Associated Press, have used "refugee" to describe those displaced by the wrath of Hurricane Katrina.

But the choice has stirred anger among some readers and other critics, particularly in the black community. They have argued that "refugee" implies that the displaced storm victims, many of whom have been black, are second-class citizens — or not even Americans.

"It is racist to call American citizens refugees," the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, visiting the Houston Astrodome on Monday. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus have expressed similar sentiments.

Why am I not even a little bit surprised?

What an idiot. I guess he doesn't consider it racist to assume that all of the refugees are black?

Give me a break!!! A word or comment can only be racist if that was the intent of the person who said it. I swear this reminds me of my college housemates who listened to tapes of people over analyzing pop songs. The stuff that they said every song meant was just sick....but the songs didn't put those thoughts into my mind...the sick people who analyzed them & made the tape did that. Jackson has come in after everyone has "labeled" the poor souls who were affected by Katrina and made most of what others have said to them & about them something terrible. Evacuees to me is a short term situation. We often have shelters opened for hurricanes here in NC and people are there for a day or two. The people affected by Katrina can't just go home a couple days. I believe that refugee has a more severe tone to it that recognizes the terrible devistation that Katrina left behind...not a racist insult. Why does anyone want to try to divide the country at a time like this.

My fiance isn't black. But he objects to being called a refugee. He's an evacuee according to him. And so is everyone else.

You know, I just can't see the whole racism claim. There are plenty of white people in Miss. who haven't gotten any help yet either. (or very little help) Is the government against everyone there also? It was a disaster, with a very chaotic response effort during the first few days. I just don't see the claim of racism ringing true.

From the AP:

MIAMI Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean has told one of the nation's largest black church groups that racism was a factor in the rising death toll from Hurricane Katrina.

Dean told the annual meeting of the National Baptist Convention of America in Miami that the nation must "come to terms with the ugly truth that skin color, age and economics played a deadly role in who survived and who did not."

He also said the funds that now support the Iraq war could be used to rebuild New Orleans or to aid the poor and elderly.

I'm gonna tell my mom and my sister to call the Rev. Jackson. They don't have any phones yet and the power works only once in a while. And the trees fell right in the yard! I'm sure it's because they're white :rolleyes1

Don't you all see how racist this situation is?

I mean, after all, Mayor Roy Nagin (black) and New Orleans P.D. Superintendent Eddie Cassell (black) obviously sent those poor (black) souls to the Superdome to die a miserable (black) death. And the New Orleans P.D. (54% black) did nothing to help the stranded poor (black) souls left to die at the Superdome and Convention Center.

And we all know that the area hit by the storm is 99.9% black and that's why the storm chose that area, because President George W. Bush, who hates blacks, gave Katrina the coordinates to hit the Gulf Coast, where it would kill as many blacks as possible.

OK, sarcasm off now.

What really, really bothers me about this whole thing is that there are a LOT of people getting overlooked because the media truly wants to make this a black/white thing. Do most people not realize that New Orleans Metro area is really 57% white and 37% black? Do most people realize the storm didn't even make landfall in New Orleans, it made landfall in Plaquemines Parish, which probably won't ever exist again? And why is it that we're just now seeing footage of Plaquemines Parish today, some eight days after the storm hit? Could it be because Plaquemines Parish is 70% white?

I mean, for every black leader that comes out and says this is blatant racism against blacks, I can point out the exact same thing occurring to whites. Sounds to me like this storm was an equal opportunity disaster.

And does Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Kanye West realize that it's WHITE AMERICA that's doing the MOST to help these people? To say this country doesn't care about these people because they are black is like spitting in my face. I don't visit shelters to get my face on TV. I'm not donating money to sell a CD. I don't have any reason, other than pure sympathy for these affected by the storm.

I really think JJ, Sharpton and West do more to hurt the cause than help it. Eventually, they'll understand that.

I think in the UK most people don't think that it's a racist issue, more a class issue! The people who had the means to evacuate did so, while the people who hadn't were left behind with no means of esacpe. Yesterday there was a report showing the military protecting the homes of the rich, while a few blocks away in a poor area dead bodies were floating in the water. I think that they've kind of got their priorities wrong!

Refugee: One who flees in search of refuge, as in times of war, opression , or religious persecution

Yep, sounds racist to me. These poor folks are seeking refuge from the storm and the devestation that followed. They are now opressed. While it may not be the best word to use, I don't see how any sane person could read racsim into this term. Wait, maybe I answered my own question..."sane".
I'm sorry to whomever I'm about to offend, but when Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton get involved, I immediately shake my head and know without a doubt where it's headed. No matter what, with these guys, life is a racist term.
