Race Reports for 5/3, 5, 6 and Encouragement/Kudos!

Thanks to everyone for your race reports. I have so enjoyed reading them, and it makes me even more bummed about not being able to stay for the 15K on Sunday or even the EoS meet on Sat afternoon.

However, I did enjoy myself. It was great meeting so many of you and being able to put a face with a name. I just wanted to thank all of you for your kindness and support. I never realized what an amazing group of people runners are, and I feel so blessed to be a small part of this group. To those who are thinking of maybe possibly doing this..... do it. Get and wear your WISH shirt. I'm not one to go up to strangers and introduce myself, but it was easy when others came up and said hi to me; and it made the morning so much more fun and enjoyable. I also loved hearing the comment about our shirts from the other runners on the course (usually as they were passing me :rotfl: ) and even in DTD where my family and I had lunch.

Carrie, thank you so much for your race report in particular. I was so moved by the pic you posted of the DLFer. You're right about her smile. I don't think she would've been any happier if she had won; and while your pic doesn't show it, you can tell by her smile that people were there cheering just as loudly for her as for the people who finished in the front of the pack. Once again.... the support from the running community astounds me.

As for me, I have a long way to go. I finish the 5K just shy of 51 minutes, but I'm not giving up. I hope to be at 45 minutes by the time school starts, and I think I will do the RFTT in Oct. It is the week before my birthday, so maybe we'll make a longer trip out of it than just 1 night. Then, I hope to be there for the 1/2 in January. I also hope to be able to participate around here more, too, and get to know all of you better.

Also, Angie, I know we haven't met, but CONGRATULATIONS to you, and I wish you all the best as you begin this new chapter in your life.

Eva - You are so close to that magical 16. That is awesome!! Just keep putting your steps in and you will get there!!!! You're right, I know the WISH team was cheering wholeheartedly. There were many others cheering the last girl on too. I hope that encouragement keeps her going.

Carrie - we are SO going back next year! Heck, maybe the sponge invention will even pay for the trip! :rotfl:

15K report!

Wow! What a weekend! I arrived solo Friday around 10:45 and by 11:45 I was in line for the expo opening at noon! I figured it was still fairly early for a resort check-in, so I picked up my goodies and explored the expo. I ended up at the medal table, looking things over. I was bummed they didn't have the ToT medal on display, thinking it would push me over the edge to register. I spoke with a Matt (not our Matt) at the medal table who seemed to be in charge. He did confirm what others have posted: ToT medal with a moving (he was hoping) elevator of some sort. I also went by the ASI table and got my scrapbooking page. I was so tempted to ask for a couple but I chickened out. :headache:

After the expo I headed to the GF to check in. I changed resorts fairly last minute because an AP rate at the GF made my stay cheaper than the Poly I had booked. I don't know about you, but I get really nervous/excited/anxious on check in. Where will they put me? Will I be in the boonies? Will I love my room or just like my room??!! Oh, the agony! And I'm waaaay too chicken to make the casual conversation and get to see what might be available so I might possibly choose. I'm always impressed with people who can do that.

I was in room 8303, Boca Chica. Lovely room, great view. I was pleased.

I spent Friday night at MK so I could see Wishes.:) :)

Saturday I screwed up my courage to meet some Wishers for tea at the GF. What a great group! I'm so glad I went! The tea and food were nice but the company was fabulous. Cam has posted some pics on the other thread. We went from there to the EoS and met even more Wishers! This group is huge!

Saturday night I did the "pin on the bib, try on the shirt, re-pin the bib, lace on the shoe-thingy, lay out all my stuff, set the alarm and check that 10 times, call for a wake up call and try to sleep" routine. I finally started to doze off around 10:30 when my lovely neighbors decided to get back from wherever and have a nice fight that lasted about an hour (off and on). From what I gather she had a really lousy vacation and wanted him to just leave her alone. She didn't want to talk about it! The whole time I was relishing that 4:00 wake up call, deciding I would be sure to bang the drawers around and generally not be quiet.

4:00 came and my eyes popped open. I quickly (and quietly because I'm nice) got ready. Walking to the bus, I met Hockeychic (Kim) and her DD. We walked to the bus and got on next to Nucpharm and Nucpharm's DH (Stephanie and Scott). Then we arrived and found our Wish group in the masses. I hung out there trading one liners with Jen (from GA).;) We were quite sarcastic and funny!:lmao: I think we scared Angie and Hockeygirl/fan. (Leana? I'm blanking on names now. Sorry.) Jen from GA was taking it all in stride but my nerves were getting worse and worse. I really wanted a 10 min/mile race, but my training was rough and not up to par. I kept saying that I would be okay with whatever happened, but I secretly wanted to pull out a good race.

The start fireworks went off and *poof* my nerves propelled me! As a side note, I really dislike starts. I'm not a herd runner, and I get annoyed and anxious to get out of the crowd to find my stride. Mile 1 was over quickly for me. I was concentrating on the crowd and before I knew it, mile 1 was over.:) I took note of how I was feeling around mile 2. Sweaty, incredibly humid conditions for me, but amazingly I felt great! By mile three I decided not to slow my pace any because I was still flying and feeling good. The turn around was fun and kudos to Matt for cheering on the Wishers he saw!:thumbsup2 That cheer kept me going.

I began to slow down around MGM and began to have the "how much longer" feel. MGM was a blur to me. I remember passing Meg from Hercules because you never get to see her!??! I remember the boardwalk but not much of the World Showcase. At that point I just wanted to be done, and I was so frustrated because the finish line seemed like it would never appear!:headache: I finally finished in 1:34.:) Basically a ten minute mile. I'm really still in shock over that and so very happy. I can't believe I had such a good run.:dance3:

After I finished I met up with the Wishers and cheered on the remaining runners.:cool1: It was such an uplifting and positive race that the stupid announcer's comment went completely by the wayside. She clearly has never run or put herself out for a race before.:sad2:

Jen in GA, I'm glad you're okay! I was looking for you at the finish and clearly missed you. Your poor DH! (and poor you having to go back for illness:scared: !) Thanks for the fun start.

I came home on Monday and my boys had each made a poster for me. My 5 year old was most impressed with the medal because I "won" the race. Yes, we all did.:)

Loved meeting all of you! Hope to do it again...just not sure when/which rac yet!

My 15k report:

I got absolutely no sleep on saturday night. I was up at 4am and left my room at BWV about 5:05am. I met a woman by the valet stand and we decided to share a cab to the race. She was very nice and helped calm my nerves. As soon as I got to the race I spotted a glowing group of WISH shirts. I went over and found Kristi and introduced myself. I also met Cam, Angie, Leana, Vicki, Jen and a few others. The group was quite large, so I did not get to meet everyone. At 5:45 I got in the port-o-potty line which moved very quickly. When I came out the WISHers were gone, so I headed over to the start and waited with the middle group (was it green flags?). I had to wait a good 20 minutes - a very loooong 20 minutes and then the national anthem was sung and a few fireworks then we were off. I was behind a few WISHers for about 1/2 a mile, but I could not keep up, so I just stuck to my own pace. The first mile I remember thinking "what the heck am I doing here??" but soon I got into a groove and started to enjoy where I was.

I mostly jogged, walking at water stops. Around mile 3 I distracted myself with a few sport beans and I think they really helped. I was surprised when I hit the turn around how many people were behind me. At about mile 4 my sock had shifted and was rubbing my toe, but I knew I better leave it be because I would probably just make it worse. I wore a waist pack and it was a total pain. It was flopping everywhere :sad2: when I ran I had to hold it with one hand - I am sure I looked like a real winner. I did train with it and had no problems, so I don't know what was going on there :confused3

I was totally ecstatic when I hit mile 5 in under an hour! Once I hit MGM I felt much more comfortable and took out my camera and snapped a few pictures here and there. Including stopping to have my picture taken with Mulan, Wendy and Meg. I must say I was very disappointed to not have more characters  Once I exited MGM I called my DH to let him know I only had about 3 miles left. Soon I was passing Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach Club and then into Epcot. By the time I hit Epcot, there were hardly any runners around me. Where did they all go?? I felt completely alone in Epcot which was a very strange feeling!

When I came to the mile 9 marker I started to jog - I knew the finish line was coming up soon :cheer2: As I made my way to the finish line, I was scanning the crowds for my family. I didn't see them :sad1: I had mickey and minnie all to myself as I crossed the finish line and mickey put his hand out for a high five.

I wobbled over to the chip remover and my leg shook as the lady removed it. Then over to get my wonderful minnie medal I had worked so hard for! Definately a great moment. I still didn't see my DH anywhere. I kept trying to call him, but he wasn't answering his phone. I made my way over to the bleachers and saw my family, my DH intently videotaping every runner crossing the finish line. I walked up to him and tapped him on the shoulder. He looked like this :scared1: He was so disappointed he missed me. I kind of felt bad for him. I crossed the line at 1:57 something and he got there at 2:02. Oh well. Maybe next year

Overall, I had a really great time. I am really proud of myself for doing both these races. My goal for the 15k was under 2 hours. My official time was 1:56:41 :woohoo: There are many things I learned that hopefully will make the next race a little easier. I enjoyed meeting everyone and can't wait until the next race!

HI! I agree with Eva! The shirts were WONDERFUL! I was walking around...soooooo lost! Anne found me (thank goodness) and told me what to do! It was one of the BEST experiences EVER!

Eva cheered me on to the finish and thank goodness for her....as I would have probably slowed down without her help!

EVA....let's work together to UP our time! I'll probabaly do the 5K in January (so that the kids can do their races, too).

Love you all

Beth

A little late...but nevertheless..:goodvibes

Go Red for Women 5K

I had hesitated doing this event, even though I had signed up for it. I didn't think I had trained enough to do the 5K and then the 15K, but after being with the WISH group and encouragement from Kristi, I decided to go for it. :)

If you ever get the chance..this is a GREAT event!! Gorgeous scenery and LOTS of shade! Ggeorgiagirl/Beth, MiniGirl/Eva, cdn gal eeyore/Leana and her mom, ultramickeymouse/Robert and DW/Linda-Wonderful to meet you! Kristi and her mom make up the rest of the starting group photo. Leana's mom came all the way from Indonesia JUST to do the 5K with her!! WOW!!

Matt and Cheryl came bounding up to say "Hi!" and then they were off to the front with the speedy people!

Go!!
80578100_1528_2.jpg

Going through DTD and over to Pleasure Island was no problem. Ggeorgiagirl/Beth's son was waiting at the Lego store, waving..and then, "Hope you win, Mom!" How sweet was that??!!

After the island, the path became rather small. :crowded:

My first 5K ever! warning- long

For Friday, I wasn’t nervous at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the expo. We hung around and heard some of the speakers, and were there for a couple of the Ladies Night speakers. I especially appreciated having vendors geared toward women!

I only woke up a couple of times in the night, but by 4 am I was pretty agitated. I couldn’t decide if I was nervous or excited. Probably a bit of both. By 5:20, I had fallen asleep again, only to be awakened by the phone & alarm. My DH, DD 11 and I met my DM & DF & Denise (pixie snake) at the front of POP to drive over to Downtown Disney. We left @ 6:15 am.

We got over to DD about 6:30. As we waited around and Denise walked to warm up her legs, I spotted a WISH shirt & went over to meet Eva (Minigirl). We chatted for a while, then went to take pics in front of the Minnie stuff. We also used the porta potties!

When they started the 1 mile @ 7:15, we went over to the front of the white flags. I saw a group of WISHers gathering, and “WISHed” they’d come up by the start of the white with us!! Ann (Maharae) finally did, and waved the rest of the group up. We met GeorgiaGirl, Minigirl, Leana’s mom (that had flew in from Jakarta) and several others!

Boy, did the time fly, then we heard them counting down. We were off! The start seemed pretty slow, but it only took 50 seconds to cross the mat. We weaved in and out of people, going through the West Side & Pleasure Island.

Denise & I never really talked about how we were planning on doing the race, so when she started into a run, I was surprised. We slowed down as we crossed a WET bridge (UGH!). We didn’t want to fall (as we had already seen someone fallen by the sidelines.

We passed the first water stop & then mile marker 1. I kept telling Denise to let me know when she could do an “interval” of running. We probably did 8-9 running intervals, 30-45 seconds long. We’d set a start point (sign, bushes) and up ahead plan a stop (bridge, etc). I only remember one incline on the course, over a bridge.

I also distracted Denise by talking to her about the scenery. Look, there’s the treehouses! Look, what kind of plant is that? I finally told her she could tell me shut up if she wanted, but she was very nice to me! Eventually, we saw Robert (ultramm) & his wife Linda.

I held the camera in my hand and took lots of pics of the course. I was really glad that I brought it along (thanks to all who encouraged me to bring it!).

I gave Denise a gummie bear and kept giving her instructions on how to eat it! (It was really funny hearing her tell the story later- Stacey kept telling me to chew, and not to choke on the gummie bear). We also had to be careful not to trip over the golf distance markers (have no idea what they’re called) on the sidewalk in one area.

When we saw the mile marker 3, we were doing an interval, so we slowed down, to have a little left for a strong finish. Little did I know how much Denise had left! When she saw the finish line, she took off!!! Literally!!! Honestly, I barely caught up to her, giving it all I had!

My DD wanted us to cross the finish line together, and all I could think of was- Yeah right, if I can catch Denise! I really pushed it, and for good reason, because our chip time was 39:59! I guess we shaved off the last second at the last second!

My family had barely made it back, as they went out for coffee. We had told them 45-48 minutes, and we finished under 40! They took pics, we got our medals & chips off, then we checked our time. We were elated to see our time, as Denise kept saying through the race, well, at least I’m not last.

After the finish, there was blue, red & yellow PowerAde & water. We grabbed some powerade, but I wasn’t hungry. I had drank water at all the water stops. I think there was oranges & bananas.

Final Comments: What a blast! I would do this again in a heartbeat! My DM wants to train and do this with us next year (she’s had 3 back surgeries!) I really appreciated the support of Denise, my parents, my hubby & DD. They were almost as excited as we were. I wish I would of taken more notice & pics of the finish line. (Of course, I was running all out at that point to catch Denise, so who could blame me!)

Stacey, congratulations! Sounds like you are hooked!

Anne, thanks for the great pics and the putting faces to names! I love that! Congratulations!

Why does Matt always look so happy?!? He even looked jovial in that pic of him coming out of the water in the middle of his tri.

Minnie 15K

It was a great start to the weekend when I met up with Cam, Rhonda, Heather, Lily, and Judy at the Expo! The Expo was bigger than last year, but the goodie bag had shrunk. Same bag, less in it! :sad1: DH and I hustled out of there to make it to EPCOT for the Flower Power concert series. DH wanted to see Petula Clark and we did arrive in time for her first show! That mission accomplished, the next was dinner. We arrived at Nine Dragons in China just in time to be put on the wait list. Twenty minutes later, they were no longer taking walk ups! :teeth: Dinner was wonderful and great seats were a bonus! Headed out to the entrance, with a slight detour into Mouse House to look for a picture frame for our DD. Didn't see anything at that time, so I went out the closest exit, while DH was trying to get me to go out another. It was Fate...because there were Kristi and her mom!! Just love bumping into WISHers in the World!!;)

After the 5K on Saturday, we went back to Buena Vista Suites and had breakfast..with other sweaty 5Kers!! a shower, nap and ready for the Grand Floridian Tea. It was just loverly!! Napkins folded like swans...:cloud9:, fantastic company, good food..siiigghhh.
80578DSC00593_2_.JPG
Heather graciously let me ride with her and Carrie and Martha to DTD for the WISH meet. Poor Carrie....poor Scott!! When Carrie mentioned that she had Denny's phone number..well...we HAD to call and WISH them fast feet!!!:cheer2: and then when Carrie showed us the AWESOME sponges that she and Scott had designed...we HAD to call him and thank him!!:dance3:

It is always so much fun to meet WISHers and reacquaint with old friends and meet new ones! Must share this picture with you..Pat's DD, Sarah, was so good to volunteer to take group pictures at the tea and at the meet! This is what she had to deal with..
80578100_1542_2.jpg
Thank you so much, Sarah!!:thumbsup2

DH and I had ADR's at Tony's on Main Street, so we headed for Magic Kingdom. We didn't want to make the mistake that we had last year where we tried to do a park the day before the 15K! After a great dinner, we headed for our hotel and bed.

Sunday, we had planned for our DD and her room mate to meet us at the hotel and then we would caravan to AK. It was dark, they couldn't find the hotel...so we finally had to tell them we would meet up at AK. There we were at 5:30... stuck in the ton of traffic trying to get to the start!! We did just make it to the WISH group, met up with our DD as the National Anthem started. I thought it was so cool that for the count down from 10, each number was accompanied by a rocket burst!

This is a crummy picture..but you have to see how thundermatt/Matt looked to all of us! The guy LEFT THE ROAD to run into the median and jump and scream encouragement to any and all WISHers that he saw! Thanks, Matt!!
80578DSC00620_2_-med.JPG

It was really neat for me to be doing a route that I was familiar with! DD had said not to slow down because of her..so I didn't. I am one of the slowest WISHers on the board..really. My children think that DH and I are going through a phase..it's cute..not much to it.."my mom WALKS these events.." DD was calling her brothers at mile 6 and telling them that she couldn't keep up with me!:woohoo: While going through MGM, though, I realized.."HEY! I could get my picture taken at the Sorcerer's Hat WITH DD!!" So I slow up..then STOP to wait for DD. She caught up and I saw a photographer..oops he's NOT an ASI guy. "I'm here for Marketing only.." Start to take off, but there's a CM with Wendy and ? who so kindly says, "Here! I'll take your picture!" She takes the camera, we pose, but she can't figure the camera out, I show her, repose, picture gets done...OMGoodness, it must have been 5 minutes!!!:scared1: We go a little further..and THERE is the ASI guy! So, ANOTHER minute or two to pose...I'm doomed for time.:sad2:

It was great going through the walkway to Boardwalk. I was really feeling lousy here last year. This time, I was fantastic! Heading to the FINISH line and that bright group of WISHers was just AWESOME!! Some of you had to have waited 40 minutes by that time!! DD finished 7 minutes after I did!! She and the boys have a new respect for us! So, my finish time wasn't better than last year..but I was better! I did much better with not weaving and with taking the most direct route. I only added a tenth of a mile to my total distance. DH, on the other hand, took 8 minutes off of last year's time!! :goodvibes Anne

Why does Matt always look so happy?!? He even looked jovial in that pic of him coming out of the water in the middle of his tri.

I think I was drugged as a child?!? :confused3

Haha look at that whacko dancing in the median HAHAH! Errr, wait a second...

Haha look at that whacko dancing in the median HAHAH! Errr, wait a second...
That picture of the whacko dancing in the median reminds me of the pictures you'd see of sasquatch or big foot. Hey maybe it's that skunk ape you hear rumored about it Florida. Ooooh, something angered the skunk ape and it's charging and waving it's arms.

When Carrie mentioned that she had Denny's phone number..well...we HAD to call and WISH them fast feet!!!:cheer2:

That phone call was like the coolest thing, and when I recounted it to the rest of the WISHers at dinner, they thought so too.:grouphug:
Thanks!

Oh yeah, I thought it was so cool that Anne called Denny to WISH us all luck. Denny - Official pictures from Run Photos have been posted for the Flying Pig.

Anne - great reports and photos! It must have been alot of fun to do this race with your DD! :thumbsup2

Stacey - Great report! I really enjoyed the scenery for the 5k also. I told my sister she has to do it with me next year, it was so much fun:yay:

Congratulations to all that raced last weekend! I loved reading all the race reports and wish I had time to respond to everyone individually. Reading the reports has renewed my motivation....Thank You! My plan is to do the Minnie next year. After reading the reports and seeing all the photos, I am looking forward to it more then ever.

My First 15K Minnie Marathon! warning- long

Denise (pixie snake) had volunteered for the 15K, so my parents & I rode with her @ 4:15 am over to AK. My parents were staying for the start, so I was able to sit in the car for about an hour. I ate breakfast (3 granola bars & a Diet Coke) and used the porta potty 3X! (I was really nerved up).

I needed to get out with the others to get calm. We went & stood by the WISH team. I was able to talk awhile, which really helped! Then it was time to line up. I went to the start of the purple, but the rest of the WISH team was in green (or many that I could see). My DM encouraged me to go over there, so I did. I was really glad, as talking to Robert & Linda really calmed me down. (except for when I spilled my fanny pack - and for the second time of the morning spilled my Advil).

It seemed to drag to the start (compared with the 5K). Finally we heard the fireworks & count down. Then we were off! A teeny bit of jogging, then fast walking. It had taken me only 30 sec to cross the mat. The first mile around the AK parking lot seemed to take forever, but I did it in about 12:30. I had no idea if I could keep up that pace!

At about 1 ½ miles, I was alongside a race walker. She asked if I was walking the race too. I said yes. We started talking & the time FLEW by! Her name is Vicki. I won’t do an exact mile for mile, for the first 5, just some general observations. I went really fast past each DJ/music area, as it was so loud! But I was glad for the music. We passed a bus that looked like it was stuck (it was, I found out later from Denise). The hills didn’t seem bad at all (actually overpasses). I never saw the sweepers. I had Power Ade at each stop.

I found out that Vicki trains racewalkers, so we talked about that. She gave me many tips on form, which were very helpful. At about mile 4 (the onramp towards MGM), Denise was directing the racers. I rarely saw WISH shirts, she saw lots! I told her to call my parents (who went back to POP to pick up DD11 & DH) and tell them that I was ahead of my pace.

Pretty soon, we were in MGM. The sun started breaking through. I was enjoying greeting the volunteers & CM’s who were on the course. We were averaging 12:30-13:45 min miles. When we saw a mile @ 13:45, we picked up the pace!

I told Vicki she could go ahead if she needed to, but she said she enjoyed the conversation. I’m totally grateful, as I really don’t think I would of kept up such a pace! At MGM, the only characters we saw were princesses. Thinking there would be others, we kept going. It was neat going down the street towards the New York skyline, and hearing clearly the background noises. (cars, people) I started feeling a pinch where my shoe meets ankle, tried to fix it at a water stop, but it went right back the way it was and continued hurting!

Vicki also knew where the photographers were, so she would give me a heads up. The mile between MGM & EPCOT totally flew by. By mile 8, I was doing the math in my head (fuzzy @ best) thinking we might could make it under 2 hrs.

Right after Yacht Club, coming up to EPCOT, we could smell bacon. I don’t even like bacon, but boy did it smell great! Only complaint here, no music. Through EPCOT, the music (normal EPCOT music) was very relaxing to me, at a time I shouldn’t be relaxing! I got pics in most countries.

As we got up to the big ball, we saw someone hobbling in. It looked like her shin or something was bothering her. I felt bad for her, she was so close. Hopefully she finished! After going to the right next to the building (backstage) I knew we were close.

2 neat things happened here: As I rounded the corner, I saw my DH & DF- Power surge! Then a song was on that I had trained to. Another power surge & goose bumps! I was going ALL OUT! I really wanted to go in under 2 hrs! But, alas, that was all I had, as the final chip time was 2:00:31. Yes, I always wonder, could I of made up those 31 seconds somewhere? (Vicki wonders too, as she emailed me that if she knew we were that close, we would of pushed it more). I barely remember crossing the finish line (I didn’t learn from the 5K) & can’t even remember if I touched Minnie & Mickey! It was all a blur!

I do know that I couldn’t of done it without Vicki, as I would have been much kinder to myself. It was like having a coach or a pacer walk with me. I would race with her anytime! Vicki & I stayed together for a while, taking pics, got our medals, drank Powerade. I thanked her profusely for her help & tips. Boy did this race FLY by! What a blast! I totally want to do a half now!

What I learned: Better, more organized fanny pack (no Advil spills). Have a friend or meet a stranger to race with (preferably faster paced than you!) Push it a little, you’ll be glad you did! Do Disney races more often! Bring more Bandaids (the spot on my ankle was a blister, I needed bandaids for the next few days at the parks!)

I really enjoyed talking to the WISHer’s! I felt a lot less lost! Thank you to ALL! I’m glad I listened to whomever said take the camera. I took pics all the time. (I love that camera, easy on & off & good focus when moving!)

Great job Stacey!!!!! Woo hoo on wanting to do a half now! Careful, though, this gee sport is addictive!!! ;)

Being able to read the race report has been fun! Thanks to everyone for sharing yor experience.

Great report Stacey! Great meeting you at the Minnie:cool1:

BTW, I have posted 61 photos that Stacey took at the 5K & 15K on my website.

Kristi: I am not the only one who got pics of your but in the 5K:eek: My DW and I also got a pic of our backsides taken at the 5K:scared1:
