Race Reports for 3/3-4 and Encouragement/Kudos!

Heather--That stinks about the construction! I did a 5K last year and there was NO parking, so I started late. I do not like the feeling of starting late at all--BUT, you did a great job catching up!!!

I am really excited about this years Minnie myself!!

I'm so glad our WISH Team is coming in with reports.

Congratulations! Angie. You did great! That is way fast for me and with issues prior. Whew! Fantastic!

Cam, Congratulations! You did a speedy time for sure. That sunshine sure helps as long as it's not too hot. Your commitment to training and weight loss is bringing you to your goals. Way to Go!

Heather, Oh what a mess to find you are stuck in traffic. It would have majorly stressed me. I am so happy that you made it and found your team. Amazing that you did that. Congratulations!

Stephanie, layers that you can toss is the answer if you can find things. It is not uncommon to see things tossed aside as the event progresses. Usually someone picks up. If not, you can go looking for your stuff after if you want to bring it to another race to toss.

ooh, ooh...I love reading everyone's race reports!! I can't wait till I can write my own. That will be in a few weeks!

Angie--WTG on your race! So glad to hear that you didn't have any knee pain. I was thinking of you this morning, wondering if it was going to bother you.

Cam---You are awesome! Awesome pace for you! It is so inspiring to see how far you have come! You should be soooooooo.... proud of yourself, just as all of us WISH team members are!

Heather-sorry to hear about the delays getting to the race. But that is awesome that you did the race anyhow. I don't know that I would have started, I probably would have been so stressed that I wouldn't have been able to run. So, WTG for getting out there!!

Stephanie--Good Luck tomorrow! Layers definetely sounds like a good idea with the expected weather. Can't wait to hear your report tomorrow!

This is a great idea! I love reading everyone’s race reports.

Angie – Yay! WTG! Glad that your knee is feeling better, too.

Cam – Sorry to hear about the death of your Garmin. You did awesome out there! WTG!!

Heather – Yikes! You did awesome, especially with that late start!

Good luck to all who are running tomorrow!!

WISHing you good races today!

We had a mini WISH dinner last night with Bill, Lynnda, Billy, Chester, Tracey and Miranda...just some carb-loading before the race.

Conditions were good when I got up this morning. I think the temp was 57F which was perfect! Also nice was getting there about 5:10...no 3 hour wait before race start. DH was kind enough to get up and drive me to the start so we didn't have two cars at the finish. I didn't find Bill before the race.

Course was a bit different than last year and there were about 1000 more runners than last year according to registration estimates. I lined up between the 12 and 13 minute signs. Never heard the gun go off for the start, just saw folks start moving. It took me about 2 minutes to get to the start line and turn on the Garmin.

The course starts at the John and Mable Ringling museum (of Ringling Brothers fame). The beginning winds through some of our bayfront neighborhoods and was dark! I couldn't really see the Garmin display until about mile 2.5. I felt great! It usually takes me about 2 miles to get into a run, but this one was good from the start. I carried the 2:45 pace band and checked at every mile. I saw Chester just a bit before mile 4 in his WISH shirt...sure makes us easy to find ;)
The course is pretty flat...until you get to the Ringling Bridge :scared1: I was doing well on pace, so walked up and ran down the bridge. Really neat to be at the top looking out across Sarasota Bay! After the up and over, the full runners split off and kept going out to Lido/Longboat Key. We curved around under the bridge and went out a bit further before the turnaround at Sarasota Yacht Club. I found Bill about mile 6...I was heading out, he was on his way back.
My pace was still great and I still felt really good. I did a gel every 3 miles and tried to take more water than usual. Back up and over the bridge and on the way back! My brain started wearing down around mile 8 after the bridge, but I used some of the self-talk techniques to keep up my spirits. I kept going pretty well, staying ahead of the 2:45 pace band...until mile 12. There it was...the WALL!
I knew I would still finish PR...had about 30 minutes to beat my finish time last year (3:03), but just couldn't keep up my 4/1 intervals. My legs and feet hurt! I think I may need to go up a 1/2 size in my shoes now with the orthotics...seems like they throw my feet forward as I kept feeling my toes hit the front of the shoe.
I thought I could still make my goal time, but just couldn't muster much energy to keep running. That last mile took forever! Kept wondering where the museum was when I finally saw it! Garmin was reading me about 0.15 miles ahead of the mile markers, but it just seemed to go on forever. Finally got back to museum property, but the Finish was toward the back of the property, near Ca d'Zan...John and Mable's former residence. I kept going until I saw the fam hanging near the finish. I was able to kick it up and run full out until I crossed the line...it was neat hearing my name! I think clock time was 2:47, Garmin time was 2:45:37 :faint: So close! I'll be really interested to see the official results. Last year, official was clock time only, but they've said this year, they'll give us chip time too.

Post race food was pretty good! Smoothie King was there with samples! They also had oranges, bananas, muffins, bagels, peanut butter, cream cheese, milk...lots of good stuff. Volunteers with water bottles were the first thing as we finished before you even got your medal. The chip cutoff was after the medal, which I thought was nice.

I didn't quite make my goal, but am still pretty ecstatic about the finish. That's almost 20 min off last year's PR and is 20 min faster than this year's WDW  A great race all around! I'm still a little nervous about the full, but have lots of training left to do. I think the gels are working better for me than the Clif Bloks. Now I need to work on pre-race breakfast. I had horrible GERD the entire race!

Overall, LOVED it, thrilled with performance, looking forward to Minnie!

Congratulations Cam!!!

Congratulations MEL!!! Boy, I wouldn't be upset about missing 2:45 by 37 seconds. You did fantastic!!!

Great race reports so far. Can't wait to read more.

Mel - Congratulations on the great time!

We all learn a little something from each race, which gels, which shoes, what pace.....that is one reaon we keep coming back.

I loved your report. I'll put this one on my list for next year.

CAM :cool1: :cool1: THAT'S AWESOME - CONGRATULATIONS!!:cool1: :cool1:

HEATHER :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 THAT'S AWESOME THAT YOU CAUGHT UP AND DID GREAT!! I agree with others, I might not have even bothered.

MEL :woohoo: :woohoo: AWESOME RACE, I'M VERY HAPPY FOR YOU!!!:woohoo: :woohoo:

I agree with Jim, DH and I will have to do that one next year!!

angie

Angie - Great job. I'm glad you had fun.

Cam - Way to go getting outside. I know how hard you have been working on your times! You are treadmill bound no more!

Heather - Excellent. Running is such a mental thing. I can't imagine starting off with that kind of stress and doing well. Good job again!

Mel - I could hear the 37 second dissappointment in your voice. Just remember that you knocked 20 minutes off your PR. Amazing!

Congratulations everyone!

First off sending pixiedust: Anne's way, she was going to snag my packet for me for the Snickers Half on Friday night since it looked at the time like I wouldn't make it there in time (no race day pickup on Sat) but I got a call from her saying she wasn't going to make the race at all as her mother was in/going in to the hospital. :guilty: Looked for her WISH shirt just in case on Sat and didn't see her, so hopefully it's nothing serious and we'll see her back here soon.

I'll keep these short as I'm pretty mentally drained.

Snickers Half Marathon in Albany, GA - Great course through treelined neighborhood streets fully shaded with some great old houses, tons of volunteers, and a nice early (7am) start time to avoid the heat. Also were letting people take 3 or 4 Snickers Marathon bars each at both the expo and the finish, so I made off with over $10 worth of those. The main con was whatever they were serving instead of gatorade (Cytomax I think?) was pretty nasty. Tried really hard to take it easy knowing I had another race the next day. Was expecting 10mpm (marathon goal pace), but about 9:30s came real easy, so stuck with that. Kicked it in as usual, and funny enough ended up 4th in my age group, although 3rd beat me by over 19 minutes. :confused3 Had I been female, I would have only gotten 11th in my age group, I guess none of the guys showed up. :)

Miles: 9:20, 9:21, 9:25, 9:14, 9:25, 9:36, 9:28, 9:32, 9:38, 9:43, 9:44, 9:14, 8:42, :54
Total: 2:04:03 Avg: 9:29

Seaside Half Marathon - For some reason or another, I was real sore for this one. ;) It was cooooold at the start, something like 40F which isn't that bad, but the 15-20mph gusting quartering headwinds for the first half made it worse. Pretty boring 6.5 mile out and back course, along the coast sort of, but some dreary through the trees parts too. Or it could have been I was just tired of running. :) Lots of hills too, soo much for "flat and fast" Garmin showed +/- 300 feet of elevation at various times. Figured I'd maybe try to equal the previous day's time if I felt good enough. Well I didn't, but I still did and then some.

Miles: 9:02, 9:06, 9:16, 9:11, 9:00, 8:56, 8:40, 9:04, 9:02, 9:08, 9:27, 9:12, 9:05, :46
Total: 1:59:01 Avg: 9:05

So there you have it, another sub 2 half. Although those last few miles were some of the most tiring I have ever run. Probably like miles 24-26 of a marathon I wager. Probably going to have to take some time off of running now and stick to the bike and some muscle work.

The monster month is completed.
2/3 Double Bridge 15k
2/4 Tallahassee Half Marathon
2/18 Pensacola Half Marathon
2/25 New Orleans Half Marathon
3/3 Albany Half Marathon
3/4 Seaside Half Marathon

Bling pic to come!

Matt - great races. Congratulations!

You've had a busy month. Spending time on your bike might be a good break for the body.
