Bumping this up!!

Weather definitely doesn't look like it's cooperating on the east coast!! Be safe, WISHers!! ::yes::

Just returned from the Run With The Dogs 5K. This is a run/walk, with or without your pup.

It's a beautiful, but cool day in NW Florida today. The winds are out of the NW at a steady 15 mph, with gusts to 25. Temp is around 48 degrees.

Arrived at Destin City Hall, signed in, and got my bib and shirt. The shirts are always a nice long sleeve, and they provide them in my size. Waited for the rest of the boys and girls from work to show up, and tried to stay warm. I'd say there were around 250 runners/walkers, and all different breeds and sizes of pups.

At 1000 we lined up, and were off. The course is an out and back through the hood. Some beautiful homes to run by. Waterstops at the 1 and 2 mile markers.

I took off and settled into a comfortable pace for me and enjoyed the scenery. Mile 1 was a 10:27 (a little fast for me), mile 2, 12:18, and mile 3 12:33. Averaged a 11:46 pace, and finished at 35:24. Felt good throughout the run, and no issues with my feet. The Asics 2130s I bought felt very good.

After finishing we waited for the rest of the herd to finish, and then everyone headed to Hooters for the post race activities. I hopped in the truck and came home.

This is a very nice race and is definitely a "do again" for next year.

:)

Hi Everyone!

I am just back from my 5k, the Tough Enough, it was a fund raising event for breast cancer. I believe that I am the Queen of Inaugeral Races, of the last five races I have done, four of them have been Inaugeral Events. But I have to say, that this one the Southwestern Oklahoma University Tough Enough 5K in Weatherford, Oklahoma came off beautifully! I would never have believed, as well run as this race was, that it was the very first one. Everything from the brunch (that was really good with lots of choices), Registration, volunteers, etc were tremendous! We raised $3,600 for Breast Cancer and had a great time.

It was a cold morning for a race, I think we finally got into the 20's by the end of it! Once you got started though, it wasn't too bad. The race wound around the campus and the town. Some of you may not know this, but Oklahoma isn't flat. This race had some serious hills! Fortunately, for the racers, the organizers left the downhill parts for last!

My granddaughter did the event with me. She is 10. She was tired and didn't really want to finish the second half, but she got a break when tied her shoe and kept up with me. Her pace was kind of a walk, walk, skip, jog, walk, walk! But she hung in and she was pretty happy with it, too. She took first in her bracket! I took second, and we both came home with medals.

My granddaughter is all for training, and getting more medals and more t-shirts and more goody bags! Although, she was tired, she thought it was great fun. Especially when they hung the gold medal around her neck. I, of course, was thrilled to have a medal too. I don't even mind that it's silver!

Wow! A lot of action this weekend. Hope everyone has a great day!

(And I am glad I am not running, it's COLD in Atlanta LOL!)

Go WISH Team!

Vic great pace you had the boys going didn't you! Sounds like a good event if you are going to do it next year.

Connie, What a fun event. I'm glad you got your grand baby on a good start. You are a great role model. You know it IS all about the jewelry. Good for her getting he first bling!

Connie - Congrats on your 5K.

Lily - The boys stayed home. One was on squirrel patrol, and the other was napping when I walked out of the door. ;)

Vic -- I love the images that came to my head about squirrel patrol! Good work on that 5K.

Today I ran my first race since WDW. It was a 1/2 marathon in Wilmington, DE called the Caesar Rodney 1/2 Marathon. I have no idea who Caesar Rodney is but must have been one tough son of a gun because his race is murder. What a tough race and course! Below are the highlights and lowlights of this race/course...

Highlights

  • Post Race Refrshments - The best part of this race was the post-race refreshments...by far. You had banana, pears, pineapple, nature bars, soy bars, PIZZA (yes, I said PIZZA), Dunkin Donut bagels, and Starbucks coffee! Like I said, this was the highlight of the day.
  • 1/2 PR - I finished in 1:46:05 (8:03) pace which was a PR for me! Not bad on a day where the temps were in the 20s at the start and wind gusts hit 20+ MPH most of the race.
  • Well Organized - Can't complain about the volunteers. I was in and out on the pre-race registration.
  • Scenic - This was actually a very pretty course. You have one stretch through an affordable housing development but most of the race was very scenic. The part through Rockford Park was very nice.

Lowlights - There were plenty.

  • Tough Course - I have never been to San Francisco but Wilmington, DE is one of the hilliest east coast cities I have been to. The first mile of this course is straight downhill. I looked down at the Garmin at one point and saw 6:05 pace. Well, what goes down must go up. The middle section of this course is mostly uphill. You go MILES running uphill! Then you run the last 3 miles downhill and get faked into thinking you are going to fly across the finish. WRONG!!! The last 1/4 is straight uphill!! I saw plenty of runners in front of me grab their sides and stop running at this point. Hardest 1/4 mile I ran all year.
  • No Water - There were 2 water stops in the first 6 miles! After that you saw one about every 2-3 miles. Thank God I brought my own water for this race.
  • Sports Drinks - NONE...until you crossed the finish line.
  • Sports Gel - NONE...Thank God I had my own.
  • Medal - NOPE. They gave out these CHEESY plastic cups that had a plastic shoe and water bottle trapped in a bottom section. Don't ask me to explain it other then it was PATHETIC! For $45 they could have at least went for a cheap medal.
  • Crowds - This is Wilmington, DE. Most of the people that come here work during the week and go home to the subburbs. There were a few dozen people around Miles 7-10...that's it.

I was happy with my time but that was all I liked about this race. I can't see any way I run this race again unless they find a way to throw a nice medal in here to make it worth the trip and pain of running all the hills. Below is my time breakdown and some course maps.

Lou, :scared1: and party: What a GREAT report!! I really, really appreciate it. I have marked that race OFF of the DE possibilities!!::yes:: (Sorry, Howard and Cam!) What a fantastic job, though, Lou!! A PR with hills has got to feel wonderful!! I really liked the way you organized the report, too. :thumbsup2 Thanks so much!! CONGRATS, again!!

Way to go, Lou! I'm not surprised it was a tough course because, if memory serves, Caesar Rodney was indeed one tough cookie.

If I'm not mistaken, he was one of Delaware's representatives to the Continental Congress that declared Independence on July 4, 1776. But, instead of being there during the debates, he was home in Wilmington, deathly ill.

When he got word that the Declaration would be voted/signed on July 4, he dragged his bones out of the sick bed and rode his horse (alone) to Philly. He made it just in time to cast his vote and sign the Declaration. He's the guy depicted on the Delaware State quarter.

Kelley - Wow, nice job on the Caesar Rodney history. You must be a history teacher. I kind of figured he was a war hero because they did have statue of a guy riding a horse in Rodney Square and I assume that was Caesar. I'm an engineer so forgive my history ignorance.

Today he could have taken a quick 20-minute Amtrak or SEPTA ride from Wilmington to Philly. A horse ride must have been a tough 30 mile ride for old Caesar.

Lily - The boys stayed home. One was on squirrel patrol, and the other was napping when I walked out of the door. ;)
Vic, Oh, I thought you were supposed to bring the pups. I didn't realize they were guarding the fort!

Lou, great event. Now I'm with Anne, I don't think I want to try that one with the hills--ever.

Erin, good for you going out there after being sick. Thorough report.

Big Vic - congrats on your 5K. Sounds like fun!

Connie - congrats on your 5K as well and getting the medal. I'm sure it was more fun having your granddaughter with you. :goodvibes

Lou - what! No medal? Bummer. Lack of water and sports drinks? Geez! Food afterwards sounds good! :thumbsup2

Erin - congrats on your 4-miler. I know you didn't do as well as you hoped but I think you did pretty darned good. Your 4-mile time is my 3-mile time. :teeth:

My report on the Dino Dash.

We knew to get there early since parking is not abundant:rolleyes: so we left the house around 6:20 and arrived about 6:50. We were lucky and got one of the paved parking spaces. 10 minutes later they were parking along the side of the road where cars were getting stuck afterwards.

It rained badly about 4 hours before the race but was a slight drizzle everynow and then during the race. However part was on dirt roads so you had to be careful when running to make sure the puddles were avoided.

The course has several terrain changes, paved road to dirt road to uneven bricks, concrete, mulch and a mix of pavement in dirt. It was recommended to take it easy so not to get hurt.

The race started on time and I was off. It was fairly good but the humidity got me after a mile with a cramp in my side. Seems to happen everytime I run in the fog or rain. I finished the 3k in 17 minutes which was a minute slower than last year. The course had more people this year and that may have slowed me down a little.

They also had several elementary school kids running. It was great to see them out there but they need to give them some ettique lessons. I nearly ran over several that would just cut in front of you or elbow their way through.

After the race I went back on the course to find Billy and help him go a little faster to the end. He did well and ran quite a bit. He loved passing people towards the end and finished in 33 minutes. He was the last in his age group but was the youngest kid running. He had a great time and loves the shirt he got. We may have a future runner in our midst. Now I have to work on speed before he catches and passes me.:lmao:

I will let Lynnda give her report later.

Bill
