Race Reports/Encouragement/Kudos for March 29th and 30th!

They just changed the ING times. They now have me as 2:30:01 - a second over my goal. I can't believe how upset I am right now. :headache:

I noticed it too...they inflated my time by nearly 2 minutes!! It's totally incorrect and I know what happened....there were two mats at the start. I crossed over one of them and then was held (at front of corral) for appx 2 minutes until they started us and I crossed the second mat. They are now using the other mat's time. Very disappointing.

Randy's time went up 3 seconds....

My cousin's is still under 3:10.

That's just strange!

Wow, Scott...
You still had an amazing time, though! Really amazing. :thumbsup2

My time increased by three seconds. I had a total tantrum when I saw I went over my goal by one second. It almost feels like a joke. Really, one second over my goal?!? :confused3

My training long runs were so much better. I have a terrible time beating myself up. I guess I'm more competitive than I thought and unfortunately running isn't really something I'm naturally good at.

That stinks they changed the times.

Leg is feeling better, it is my left knee that I think now caused my issues. I will be icing it this week!

Shan:  I'm so proud of you! Just think you were so sick less than a week ago. You did wonderful out there today....I'm glad you aren't beating yourself up over your time goal. You are SOOO much like me....I get so disappointed. But realize that what everyone else sees is someone who went out there on a TOUGH course...having just been sick....and totally rocked the race. You did great girl!!!! I have to say that I've never been able to run a big distance race at my training pace...:confused3 ...someday maybe LOL. But I'm learning to deal with it and just enjoy the experience. Take care of that leg btw...did you ice bath???? :scared1:

Carol: Randy's time was great despite his injury! Wow! The whole time thing is bad though. Seconds could affect somebody's ability to qualify for Boston. That is not a good situation :(. Speaking of which...congrats to your cousin...WOW!

Thanks and yes, I did do an ice bath.

Hey, maybe if enough people complained they could change back to the original posted chip times! :rolleyes1

Cindy - more downhills than ups :goodvibes: I'm liking the sound of that!!! Awesome job with the PR!!! Even more so that you were happy with the way you ran the race...that's the most rewarding thing of all...great job!!

Mike - Holy smokes dude...I can't imagine doing a full that fast!! CONGRATULATIONS!! You killed it!

Casey
- Awesome job with the 5k!! Soo close to the 8's, I'm sure you can hit that mark with your next event :) And how cool is the Cirque du Soliel theme? It had to be a blast!

Betsy - I have huge respect for you tri people and you totally rocked it!! Sorry to hear about your hip issues, but you smoked that bike ride!! Nice, nice job :)

Ed - Wow!! That event sounds really cool! I bet it was beautiful and with Buffett music to boot :) Excellent report and awesome time. Good luck next week! (and CMM is one of my favorite races ever, I'm a bit jealous)

Carol - Wasn't me in the Goofy shirt, I wore the Donald instead...thanks for volunteering your time and congrats to Randy and your cousin!!

Cecilia - Great job out there! I know you weren't feeling good going into the race, but you still pulled out an awesome time...way to go!

Shan
- I'm still counting your 2:29:58 :goodvibes: GREAT JOB!! You were so sick the last week and didn't know if you would even be able to compete, so congratulations on an awesome race!! Kudos to DH too!! We were 20 seconds apart and in the same corral..I bet I ran next to him for most of the race :rotfl:

Allie
- Great job on the PR! Especially since you weren't 100%! Good luck with the upcoming 5k..you'll rock it for sure!

GREAT JOB WISH TEAM!!!

Race Report - ING Georgia Half Marathon - Sunday March 30, 2008

Time - 1:54:10

As opposed to doing a traditional play by play of the day that was, I'm going to just bullet point some details about what I experienced.

The drive down
- Was surprised to find ZERO signage, ZERO police directing traffic. I'd just go down a road and suddenly find it closed with no warning. I work downtown, so I knew my way around but it was a bit surprising and a little frustrating.

The corrals - I saw the chaos last year that occured when you just let 15,000 people line up wherever they want and I think the corrals worked great this year. A huge bonus for me was the fact that my corral (#3) was walked up to the start where they held us for two minutes and then let us go. I was right up in front, and it made for an amazing experience when we started...actually felt like I was with the front runners for a while :goodvibes:

The race - For me, I got off to a fast start and probably should have backed off just a bit to conserve energy. The second half of my race was substantially slower than the first half (1st was 8:24mpm...second was 8:59mpm LOL). The hills were everywhere, but I train on them during the week...it did seem like there were only a couple flat spots. I noticed many mile marker signs just laying on the ground which was inexcusable...I totally missed two splits to this until I caught on that the signs were not up (or had been knocked over?). The water and gatorade stops were very well manned and had plenty of liquid. The wave start definitely kept the crowd thinned out which was a big plus.

The finish area - I was pleased at how spread out the finish "chute" was...there was ample room between the water, medals, blankets, chip removal and food. Country Music had a VERY crowded area last year so this was a welcome change. I was surprised that ASI took your photo prior to crossing the line though...maybe I missed something here?

Timing error - The most frustrating thing for me is that when I crossed the line, my watch showed 1:54:13. When I checked the PC shortly afterwards, it showed a chip time of 1:54:10. Later on in the evening, the time had been changed to 1:56:07. What happened is that when we were walked up to the start line, there were two sets of chip mats. About 4 rows of us crossed over that first mat and were held for the wave start for approximately two minutes and then crossed over the second mat at the start. Seems to me they switched which mat they used...which is a total farce in my opinion. A certified event like this (it's a State Qualifier marathon course for National Championships...as well as a Boston marathon qualifier) should NOT have an issue like that. I'm sticking with 1:54:10, not because it's faster but because it's correct.

Summary
- All in all, I was surprised at the lack of information and signage. Unless you read the newspaper on Sunday morning, it's very possible that you had no idea a marathon was happening in the city. The whole event seemed "thrown together" a bit...from the misspellings on the starting line handouts at the expo (Georgia Mataton), to the near empty goody bag handed to us, to the starting line announcer having to tell the drivers to get in their pace cars, to the full size Ryder truck in the middle of Corral 2, among other things. The inaugural year sold out and this year did not. I can say that it is not a race that I wish to return to in the future, and the numbers are reflecting the same sentiment among others.

Wow...I didn't set out to bash the event :rotfl: Maybe it's because I live here and work in the city and just expect more fanfare, maybe I'm just being too harsh on the particulars. I'm sure most, if not all of the 14,500 runners had a great experience out there today and that's what it's really about. For that, I guess you can't complain :)

Personal note - I learned today a lot about what racing events means to me. I enjoy traveling to a destination, taking in the city sights and entertainment, running the race and then celebrating afterwards. When I look back at the prior races I've run (not including 5k & 10ks), time is the last thing on my mind. I did this race today on my own, trying to finish with a fast time...it was far less rewarding than when Amy and I gear up in some far away locale. I don't think I'll ever do a half or full without her again, as it's the experience, the surroundings, the friendship and bond that we share that is the reward to me. I'm super excited about the Minnie Weekend and cannot wait to get to sunny Orlando in May.

Thanks for reading my ramblings...sorry it took a negative turn there.

CONGRATULATIONS WISH TEAM!

You guys all did great. I am inspired by how many of you pushed through illness and other issues to do so well!

Wow - what a weekend! Where to begin?

Allie - Congratulations on your 5K! :cool1: That's an amazing time, especially since you weren't feeling 100%. You're gonna have to get a Garmin Forerunner so you don't have math issues and don't have to enter split times in your phone! I can't drink and run at the same time either - I just use the water stations for my walk breaks.

Shan - Way to go girl! Whether it's a 2:29:58 or a 2:30:01, you did GREAT!!! :worship: Remember that a week ago you were seeing the doctor cause you were too sick to run? You did a fabulous job today.

Scott - Great job for you too! Loved your report - definitely gave a nice assessment of what went right and not so right. Sounds like the local scene just isn't for you.

Carol - Congratulations to Randy for finishing almost under 4:00 despite the injury. And thanks to you for volunteering despite horrid conditions. If Atlanta is anything like Raleigh today, being outside is just plain nasty. Our Galloway group was volunteering for a local half, but I had prior commitments at church - boy was I glad when I saw the weather this morning!

Betsy - Glad you had fun at the Tri, and great job!

Ed - Your 10K sounds gorgeous! And you did terrific, especially for a first time. If not for the humidity, I'd love to come down there and do that one next year...

Jackie

Wow congratulations to all who ran this weekend!! Great job!!!

Shan - You did great! Try not to beat yourself up over the second ;)

Scott - I totally agree with what you said at the end. I ran most of my races for time and the ones I really pushed it and got great times, I did not enjoy as much as the races I did with my sister. I would rather go slower and have a friend with me than get a PR by myself.

Becky

Great Job you guys!!! Way to go!

Sorry about the ING timing issue. That stinks!

Stacie

Allie, way to go on that 5k! You did it! Hope you stay well.

Scott, Shan and Cecilia, great job. So sorry that you had timing issues. You all did great!

Cecilia, hope your nap was good. You did fabulously! Good job!

Shan, I'm sorry about that one second. You did it though! You were worried about not making it at all. I'm proud of what you did!

Scott, great report. Thanks for all that info.

I thought I'd link Scott H's report. He posted separately.

Congrats to all the runners this weekend. You all did great.

Sorry about the timing mat problems. You would think they could figure out how to get the right times.

Bill

Thanks guys!

I have to agree with Scott about the race though. I really wanted it to be the superior event that it should be but it just didn't measure up.

I took Marta. Got to the station at 5:15 and it took until 6:40 to get to Peachtree Center (normally it takes 30 minutes) There were NO signs to tell us which way to go to get to the start and so hundreds of panicky people went down one street only to find it closed because of falling glass!

At the start, all the signs were at eye level. Which would be fine if there weren't thousands of people in front of them. It took us 15 minutes to find the bag check and then we had to scramble to get to to our corral. I still don't know if I was in the right corral or not.

The race course itself was great and the water stops were 100% better than last year. It wasn't as pretty as last year because its been colder so there weren't nearly the flowers blooming. There wasn't as much fan support either but it was miserable out so that was to be expected.

The bag check was a disaster. I hope that was a last minute change because of the tornados and not the way the designed it. Lots of cold wet unhappy runners had to wait a very long time to get their dry clothes!

I think Scott nailed it when he said it seemed "thrown together". However most of the big issues from last year were fixed and they did have to make some last minute changes.

For me this race was about testing myself. I have been so incredibly fortunate in my short running career. I have rarely been sick. I haven't had any real setbacks with injury either. So this was a first. I was absolutely amazed at what I was able to do. I was crying pretty hard at the finish because I just couldn't believe I had finished and finished so well.

I will probably do this race again next year. Its a home town race and I enjoy racing and seeing my friends along the course. It also helps that my running partner lives in town too. It is alot more fun to do a race with someone than by yourself. Even if you don't talk during the race, its the before and after that make such a difference. Eventually, I plan to do the full marathon here. Maybe. I love the half marathon distance so its hard to say.

They played with the chip times last year as well but eventually it all worked out. Give it a couple days and check again.

I posted this report on my team because I didn't realize this thread was going! Thanks to Maharae for listing me as well :goodvibes

Another ING Georgia Half Marathon report:

DH and I walked down Luckie St. :thumbsup2 at 6:15 and with a bit of work finally found Corral 7. He saw me off there and I believe I crossed the start line at 7:24. It was a very cold day, much colder than expected or forecast and the wind chill felt like middle 30's to me! In some ways, I think that helped and I personally felt so blessed that we did not get rained on, after all!!!!!! :cold:

Even though, I am still fighting a lupus flare, somehow, I felt good (even with no long prep runs! ). I was able to run at least 35% of the time or so and very regularly with a run walk pattern. I paced with the six hour marathoners for the first seven miles, at which time we split and there were no pacers for the half runners I just tried to keep a good pace anyway. Shockingly, I also accomplished a new PR. The finish time for me appeared to be 10:19 which puts me at a definite sub 3 hour half I am calling it 2:55 until I see my chip time on the web!! :confused3

I enjoyed the bananas, blueberry gogurt :upsidedow , cookies, water and gatorade immensely afterward, LOL! I looked like I had frostbite by the time I made it back to my hotel but it was great fun and now I can't wait for the Minnie Oh, and my hubby just about froze too waiting to cheer me at Mile 11, lol! He couldn't wait to hightail back to the hotel, lol :lmao:

ETA: chip time 2:59:55 so I just BARELY got in under 3 hours, LOL! Just to say I know how Shan feels because I could have sworn the times I listed in the body of the report were very close  But, I am still happy because I beat my previous times!!

Just loved reading everyone's reports too! :grouphug:

Shan - After all that, you were so close to your goal. I hope you still consider it a HUGE victory! Way to hang in tehre and do so well!

Lisa - :grouphug: Amazing! Way to go!!! You rock!

Scott - You made it for through your first solo race! I am using you fo rmy inspiration for Minnie, which will be my first 100% solo race. If you caan do it, I can! lol. Dh doesn't understand why I am scared. I always do traing runs faster w/o him. Races are diff. though. Way to go!!!!

Cecelia - COngratulations! You are rock fro this WISH team! Way to go!!!

Hi All,
So many good races this weekend. You guys did wonderful. Geeze, the ING seems a bit cold for me I don’t know if I would have survived.

I don’t want to forget anyone so just a congratulations to all of you. Whether it was a PR or just a fun run I hope it was still fun. After all, that's what we are doing this for right?

Enjoy,
Duane

Cecilia, you did so awesome! I can't imagine being sick and running that fast! :woohoo:

Ya, I asked a woman holding an info sign where the corrals were and she didn't know. :lmao:

I have to say it must have been hard changing things around last minute because of the storm, still could have been better, though!

I thought the water stations did great.

Lisa, congrats on your run! :cheer2:
Your poor hubby, I bet he was like a block of ice after waiting.

When I get around to it, I'll have to post a pic DH got of me coming toward the finish. It is funny, I look pretty mad at him. I obviously wasn't a happy camper. :rotfl2:
