Race Report - ING Georgia Half Marathon - Sunday March 30, 2008
Time - 1:54:10
As opposed to doing a traditional play by play of the day that was, I'm going to just bullet point some details about what I experienced.
The drive down - Was surprised to find ZERO signage, ZERO police directing traffic. I'd just go down a road and suddenly find it closed with no warning. I work downtown, so I knew my way around but it was a bit surprising and a little frustrating.
The corrals - I saw the chaos last year that occured when you just let 15,000 people line up wherever they want and I think the corrals worked great this year. A huge bonus for me was the fact that my corral (#3) was walked up to the start where they held us for two minutes and then let us go. I was right up in front, and it made for an amazing experience when we started...actually felt like I was with the front runners for a while

The race - For me, I got off to a fast start and probably should have backed off just a bit to conserve energy. The second half of my race was substantially slower than the first half (1st was 8:24mpm...second was 8:59mpm LOL). The hills were everywhere, but I train on them during the week...it did seem like there were only a couple flat spots. I noticed many mile marker signs just laying on the ground which was inexcusable...I totally missed two splits to this until I caught on that the signs were not up (or had been knocked over?). The water and gatorade stops were very well manned and had plenty of liquid. The wave start definitely kept the crowd thinned out which was a big plus.
The finish area - I was pleased at how spread out the finish "chute" was...there was ample room between the water, medals, blankets, chip removal and food. Country Music had a VERY crowded area last year so this was a welcome change. I was surprised that ASI took your photo prior to crossing the line though...maybe I missed something here?
Timing error - The most frustrating thing for me is that when I crossed the line, my watch showed 1:54:13. When I checked the PC shortly afterwards, it showed a chip time of 1:54:10. Later on in the evening, the time had been changed to 1:56:07. What happened is that when we were walked up to the start line, there were two sets of chip mats. About 4 rows of us crossed over that first mat and were held for the wave start for approximately two minutes and then crossed over the second mat at the start. Seems to me they switched which mat they used...which is a total farce in my opinion. A certified event like this (it's a State Qualifier marathon course for National Championships...as well as a Boston marathon qualifier) should NOT have an issue like that. I'm sticking with 1:54:10, not because it's faster but because it's correct.
Summary - All in all, I was surprised at the lack of information and signage. Unless you read the newspaper on Sunday morning, it's very possible that you had no idea a marathon was happening in the city. The whole event seemed "thrown together" a bit...from the misspellings on the starting line handouts at the expo (Georgia Mataton), to the near empty goody bag handed to us, to the starting line announcer having to tell the drivers to get in their pace cars, to the full size Ryder truck in the middle of Corral 2, among other things. The inaugural year sold out and this year did not. I can say that it is not a race that I wish to return to in the future, and the numbers are reflecting the same sentiment among others.
Wow...I didn't set out to bash the event

Maybe it's because I live here and work in the city and just expect more fanfare, maybe I'm just being too harsh on the particulars. I'm sure most, if not all of the 14,500 runners had a great experience out there today and that's what it's really about. For that, I guess you can't complain
Personal note - I learned today a lot about what racing events means to me. I enjoy traveling to a destination, taking in the city sights and entertainment, running the race and then celebrating afterwards. When I look back at the prior races I've run (not including 5k & 10ks), time is the last thing on my mind. I did this race today on my own, trying to finish with a fast time...it was far less rewarding than when
Amy and I gear up in some far away locale. I don't think I'll ever do a half or full without her again, as it's the experience, the surroundings, the friendship and bond that we share that is the reward to me. I'm super excited about the Minnie Weekend and cannot wait to get to sunny Orlando in May.
Thanks for reading my ramblings...sorry it took a negative turn there.
