Kevin - I see you are doing the Marathon of the Palm Beaches - are you doing the full or the half? You will have to tell me how it is. I might try the 1/2 next year. I don't know if I will do a full again (ask me after Jan 11th - lol)

Hi, I guess I am first to report.

I did the:

Parking was a bit of a hassle as the parking was very far away from the place to pick up your race bib and chip. I ended up parking across the street at the Costco in the back and walked across. There were ALOT of tents up from different running stores and some other places. Got my bib, t-shirt, pins, chip, and then jingle bells. Yes, they handed out jingle bells to everyone to wear. I walked ack to my car and placed on my bib, my chip and tied the jingle bells to my shoes. Took off my jacket and back over to the starting area. By this time there was about 5 more minutes until the start. I started on Sunrise Blvd across from the Sawgrass Milles Mall. The course went back into a Corporate Park type area and it had a bridge that went over the canal. I racewalked most of it but did jog the down sides of the bridge. At first, all of the jingling was a bit weird, but I got used to it after that first mile. There were some cheerleaders and a radio station set up along the 3.10 miles. At the end the had water and a small towelette that said Jingle Bell Jog Finisher. Was walker friendly as there was also a 5k fitness walk that started at the same time. FOr all race participants there was a free breakfast sponsored by IHOP!
Overal was a nice little race and I think I will do it again. They also has a costume contest going on at the same time, I saw lots of Santas, Mr. Clauses and some reindeer.
Official time was 38min 12sec in 3.10 miles for a 12:18 pace.
Garmi said 38min 7sec in 3.13. miles for a 12:10 pace. Not too shabby and pretty much a PR for me.

See my jingle bells????

Kevin: hope you marathon in the Palm Beaches is going well!!

Tracy

Great job on your time, Tracy! Sounds like a fun event. I like the idea of everyone wearing bells on their shoes.

I hope everyone has good races this weekend!

Chad just called from Vegas....
He finished in 4:01!!!!
His last PR was 4:25.

And no, Judy. No arrests.
They are too nerdy for that sort of "fun!" :rotfl:

Congrats to Chad and to Tracy -- loved the jingle bell photos, Tracy. Awesome PR, Chad.

Just a quick report from me on the Run to Victory Half Marathon (formerly the Victory Junction Run) in Randleman NC. Went to the aiport Saturday to pick up my friends from NY (Disney Deads Dave and Eileen). Jeanne (jeanneg) and DH John were kind enough to pick up our race packets while I took Dave and Eileen to vist Old Salem and have a marvelous lunch at the Tavern there. Later, I also got to have dinner with Jeanne and DH John in Archdale (so I got to visit both sets of friends). Got back to the hotel and crashed. Woke up very early for this morning's race. Not much to tell that I haven't reported in previous years. (Here's my race report from the inaugural race and from last year.) I finished the half right about where I'd anticipated (3:15 was my estimate; I think I finished at 3:14 clock time).

My friends Dave and Eileen fared much better: Eileen (who finished around 2:00) won her age group and Dave (at 1:45) placed 3rd in his, so they both got very cool age-group award tiles made and presented by the Victory Junction Camp kids (which NASCAR's Kyle and Patti Petty took the time to autograph). Dave and Eileen were completely wowed by the camp and are already talking about coming back next year and bringing their friends. One "side effect" of having very speedy friends is that I didn't get to see Jeanne and John finish. I'd already made my NY friends wait an hour for me to finish and I felt I needed to get my guests back to their Raleigh hotel. (As it turned out, they both said afterwards, "No! We would have loved to see Jeanne and John finish!" -- Next time I'll ask!)

Tomorrow Dave and Eileen have an early morning flight to... WDW to take in 5 days of Christmas special events. I wish I was tagging along!

I will say that when I saw Jeanne and DH they were motoring along a little ahead of their planned pace, so I trust they finished well. I'll also say that both Dave and Eileen said that was the hardest course they'd ever run (I've done this race all three years and it has been a different course each year) -- and that's saying something based on all their years of race experience.

This year's medal was smaller/lighter weight and did not include the Penguin logo on the reverse (instead it had the camp logo).

I think the economy is hitting everyone really hard -- including the folks staging these races. It seems most of the race fields are smaller this year, the goodie bags lighter, the medals smaller. Looks like Disney may buck that trend though!

Oh! And I also saw WISHer Christa's good buddy Ron Horton at the race again this year. I've known Ron for around 10 years -- and he's just an awesome guy. He had a pretty big running group with him this year -- I took their group photo. Amazing to think how many people I've come to know and love during these years of doing distance events -- even as slow as I am. A notice to all you newbies, it really can be life changing. :thumbsup2

I met a very nice couple (whose names I've already forgotten) who remembered me from the Charity Chase Half I did very early this year. More specifically -- they remembered my WISH shirt! Again, kudos to those who designed the logo and decided on the slogan -- so many folks comment on it! I always love wearing it too -- I really live that slogan.

Sorry this took so long.

Congratulations to Chad! Good job.

Wendy, your race reports are always fun to read. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. By your description, I would love to do this one day.

Congratulations to Chad! Great finish time! I looked for all the WISHers out there today but didn't spot anyone.

Wendy, glad you had a nice race and enjoyed spending time with other WISHers. Congratulations on your race. You keep quite a busy race schedule. :)

This morning I ran in the Las Vegas Half Marathon starting at 6 am. My neighbor and I carpooled together, she ran the full. While walking through Mandalay Bay on the way to the start area, we came across our share of running Elvis characters, showgirls, and brides and grooms.

We decided to make our way to the corral early so we could get close to the front. Robin Leach was the race announcer. Once the race started, fireworks began. I think those were going off at MGM Grand. It was still dark enough out where all the hotels/marquees on the strip were still flashing and lit. Somewhere between mile 5-6, they had two running chutes set up off to the side for anyone wishing to have a "run thru wedding." :rotfl: Only Vegas! There were also lots of people running in full Elvis costumes, men and women. I ran along side a man dressed as Elvis for several miles. That's a first.

Overall, the most exciting part of the run was the first half/6 miles running down the strip. Once you turn around and come back up the back parts of town, it's nothing exciting. But, the whole course is nice and flat...which was all I could ask for!

I made a goal to finish in under 2 hours. So, I kept a mid 8 low 9 min pace in hopes of making my goal. I ended up crossing the finish in 1:55:49. I was so excited to have my first sub 2 hour half.

After the race, the spread of food and drinks was nice. My favorite was that they had ice cream bars. Everyone was going on about how thrilled they were to get ice cream. After that, I took some finishers pictures with Elvis and some showgirls. I'll have to wait to see those till the race photo company gets them up.

I plan to do this event next year since it's just a 20 min drive from home for me. Starting in 2009, the Las Vegas Marathon becomes a Rock N Roll race event!

A few photos -

Me posing in front of the porty potties and water bottles. :lmao: Not sure why they didn't pick a prettier spot for the Vegas sign.
Another thanks to Tracy for sending out the WISH visors so fast, too!

Great run Casey! You rocked it.

Wendy, another fun report!

Casey, awesome photos! And as I'm partial to blue, I'd have liked the half medals better than the full. Great job on the race -- thanks for sharing. Love reading the reports!
