Well my half trainig plan--which, of course, has been tweaked-- called for a 10-k as a sort of training break. So I rolled out of bed this morning at 7:35 and at 7:50 decided to do the Jingle Bell Run in Bloomfield, MI. The race had a 5k run/walk and the 10k run. I had scoped it out as a possibility, so it wasn't totally random. Besides, December in Michigan is pretty limited for races of any kind! So off I went, not sure if I should run or race. Then I remembered--the way I run, you can't tell the difference! (and neither can I--I mean really, after a year of running you'd think I would start to feel the difference, but I am still as clueless as ever!)

Previosuly, the run had been in downtown Birmingham, but somehwere along the way it was moved and now starts/finishes at one of the local schools. The course was a loop course--2 circuits of the 5k. Not something I was necessarily looking forward to, but whatever. The bonus of being at the school is that you get to do all the registration, bathrooms, refreshments, etc indoors. Last year there were 1200 runners. Don't know the tally today. Usual assortment of Santa hats, Santa outfits and PAWS--the Detroit Tigers mascot. Race time temp: ~ 20 degrees, light/no wind

As usual, I didn't bring my watch and having no sense of pace, I started out. Turns out they had a clock at the one mile point and I had gone out in 8:40! Now, since this was my first 10k, I was hoping to finish in 1 hour or less (sounds like a dry cleaner--or photo processor!) So that was too fast. I slowed down some and chugged along. The course was through a neighborhood of upscale houses and fortunately the roads were clear of snow or ice (unlike my own street at home).

Rest of the race went like this: ran, took water at mile 2, ran some more, saw the 10k leaders coming back my way--including some fast, older women, saw the people doing the 5k go to the finsih line, hit the second loop, ran some more, stayed on the shoulder of a woman who was running about my pace (whatever the heck it was!), took water from the same person again at 5 miles, felt a little bonked towards the end--did I mention that I didn't eat aything before the race? I don't run well with food on my stomach, and there was no water around when I thought I might try my Powergel so I didn't bother. Dropped the woman I was shadowing-- a real surprise since I figured she would drop me. Dodged walkers doing the 5k, put on the obligatory burst of speed at the end (ha, ha) and finished.

The result? I finished in 54:50 for a pace of 8:50. This boggles my mind actually, because I figured that for the 10k I would surely be slower than the 5ks I have run (all 2 of them), but amazingly, it was the same overall pace.

Back indoors to get warm--or cool since I really get hot out there running. Post-race food consisted of the usual ornages, bananas, water, along with the not-so-usual (for me) chili, nachos. Coffee and hot chocolate, too.

Posted results show that I was 4th out of 5 in my age group (50-54). But I'm pretty happy. I ran pretty well, my knee/hip bothered me but not to the point of real distraction, and now I'm done running for the weekend! Now it's the home stretch--my longest long runs are coming up and 4 weeks from today it willbe the real test.

Thanks for reading,

Maura

Great race Maura!!!

Hi Tiger Lily 03!! :wave2: It was very nice to meet you on Friday night.

Well, its 3:07 am, Hawaii Standard time.

I'm up, had breakfast, and about to slather up the bones with Bodyglide and Vaseline. Must mean I have a 26.2 training run today.

It poured all day Saturday, and it's raining lightly now. I expect to be puddlejumping today.

I'll check back in this afternoon.

Thanks for the report Maura. Can't wait to here the rest of the reports.

Well, the good news is I PR'd!!! 5:11:49.

I was feeling in the groove through mile 15 1/2, and then the legs said that's enough and cramped up on me. I ended up walking the remaining 11 miles back to the finish, and whenever I attempted to run the cramps returned.

Oh well, it was a training run for next month.

Rain was falling the first 12 miles, then it faded to a drizzle. Finally around mile 20 the sun popped out, and made it hot and humid.

Got my shirt and medal, and the family picked me up.

Took my ice bath, threw everything in the laundry, and I am ready for lunch!

Three other things I am happy about, no chaffing, 10 toenails, and I can walk down stairs normally without holding onto the handrail. :lmao:

Hope everyone is having a good Sunday.

Aloha Oe.

Mile 22, too late for the Biofreeze to be effective.

Jeff You impress me with your ability to shake off what must have been a disappointing race. Sorry it didn't go better. Now aren't you glad you're coming to Disney so you can have your "real" marathon?;)

Maura

Thanks for the report Jeff. Sorry the weather didn't cooperate. Good news about no chafing and being able to walk down the stairs normally. At least you got in a decent training run for next month.

Maura - congrats on that time and no real pain!

Jeff - bummer on the cramps and weather but big yay on no chafing and stair ability! You'll do great at WDW I'm sure.

As for me, did a 5K Reindeer Run Sunday. Weather was, well Chicago. It was cloudy, 42 degrees with winds of 25mph gusting to 36mph for wind chill of 23. On the up side, it had melted most of the snow/ice from the roads.

Run was sponsored by Liftetime Fitness so got to hang out in the gym before race time. Also meant I could do my warm up inside. Odd thing - it was chip timed but no start mat so it went by clock time then your chip at the end. First time I've seen that.

Small field, 700 runners/walkers. This was Patrick's first distance since the knee surgery so didn't want to push too much. Been working on speed and the first mile was 13:33. Seeing as I'm a walker that's not too shabby! Next two were low 14's as the only hill was into the wind. Finished in 44:05 per my Garmin.

Grabbed water, cookies (out of bananas) then hit the showers there before heading home.

Did prove to myself that I can walk sub 14's now just need to keep working at that. Just not for Jan. ;)

My daughter gets her photo in today's paper, and I don't:lmao:

I decided late to run a 30K event last weekend, so I was not on the calendar, but here is my report.

The Lakes of Williams Ranch 30K in Sugar Land, Texas. Overall, this was a nice race that seemed well run. The water stops were well located on the main triple loop of the course and there was light, but vocal support from people along most of the course. There were two water station located at opposite ends of a 3.7 mile loop on the course. I was glad to have brought a water bottle with me as I like to take in a lot of fluids on a day as warm as it was.

Although recents have left me somewhat underprepared for the distance, I still showed up prepared to run and represent my local running club (The Woodlands Running Club, sorry but I did not wear my WISH shirt this time)as they travelled across the Houston area. As a back of the pack runner, I was able to keep with a pace of 12:30 - 13:30 miles, otherwise known as my training run pace. A little before the halfway point I noticed my heart rate was staying higher than I liked (likely due to warm weather and 97% humidity) and started taking it a bit easier on the run. As I neared the 20K mark, a fellow runner named Heather said something to me about us leap-frogging past each most of the day, and as she was wearing a Longhorn Triathlon shirt--a race I hope to do one day--I asked her about the Longhorn Triathlon . We ended up walking and talking together for a bit which also allowed my heart to get a bit of a break. For the next 10K+, we walked and ran together (mostly walking as we were both suffering a bit, me from a high heart rate and occasional calf cramping, her from upset stomach) and just generally had great conversation and enjoyed the balance of the race. I finished somewhere around 4:24, about 15 minutes slower than planned, but I am happy with my performance.
