Hi folks. Last week I was nauseous from the time I woke up til the time I went to bed. This week it has intensified. So far, knock on wood, no vomitting, but I know it's coming. Anyway, I'm looking for anything and everything to help alleviate this affliction! I've tried saltines, ginger ale, and lemonade & potato chips. I'm working on eating small amounts every two hours or so. So far, nothing's worked. I've got a long ways to go and any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks,
Lisa

Not a lot I'm afraid, other than time- I found it subsided a lot after 12 weeks. I wasn't just nauseus but actually sick, frequently! I felt thoroughly miserable - but it is a sign of a healthy pregancy, when I miscarried I had no sickness/nausea at all, so try and hold onto the thought that it means things are going well.

Ginger biscuits are quite good, but nothing really helps - but although it seems a long way off 12 weeks will be here before you know it and it will settle down.

I was sick too, I feel for you! I tried everything and I'll just add to the suggestions already here. Suck on mints, and sip mint tea. I also didn't have luck with saltines but arrowroot cookies (the baby kind) helped. I would also go to the Dr. and ask for suggestions, if you're having a really hard time take gravol. I took the childrens instead of the adult, it didn't make me so tired.

Best wishes and congratulations!!

Don't know if you're doing this or not, so I thought I'd offer the suggestion. I was seeing a nutritionist when I got pregnant, and she told me to keep a box of graham crackers by the bed and eat a couple before even attempting to get out of bed. That really helped -- I never threw up, and was only queasy when I forgot to eat before actually rising.

Hang in there -- the reward is definitely worth it (but you knew that!)! ;)

Thanks for the advice ladies. I have saltines and ginger ale before I get up in the morning. It staves off the actual vomitting, but not the nausea. In fact, the first thing I feel when I wake in the morning is the nausea. I don't even have to move and it's there!! *sigh* I know I just have to ride this out and I'm just being wimpy. I do tell myself that this is a good sign and that this too shall pass. Besides, if I'm being wimpy now imagine how wimpy I'll be later!! :D

Bev - I also miscarried last year and had no symptoms so this is definitely a good thing. However, you can only tell yourself that so many times! lol!

I've got my first doctor's appointment tomorrow and we'll see what he has to say.

Counting my blessings,
Lisa

I don't have any advice, I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS!!!!:bounce: :D

Protein.....make sure that what you do eat contains protein...if you can handle it have nuts, cheese, meat....

I know I could only eat cheese and saltines at the beginning of my first pregnancy. With my second it was almonds...

The protein can also help prevent other problems in pregnancy....do an online search for the Brewer diet for more info.

I was never sick during pregnancy but was given some pre-emptive advice from the nurse practitioner. Plain ginger, not ginger ale, to relieve the nausea and vomiting.

I have used it with stomach bugs and such and it does work. Buy real ginger root at the grocery store and use it to make a hot tea (just grate the fresh ginger in hot water) or use it in cooking (again, grate it and toss it into a stir-fry or soup).

First, congratulations :D and my sympathies for the morning sickness! :( I just wanted to throw in a couple of other thoughts.

B6 - prenatal vitamins contain more than your average multi-vitamin & some doctors believe that a lack of B6 can cause/worsen morning sickness. This makes a lot of sense to me. I'm diabetic & read up a lot on this as a lack of B6 can actually cause diabetes. Anyway, the average "normal" person's sugar runs 80 - 120. A pregnant woman's sugar runs 70 - 110. Some doctor's believe that women with morning sickness have lower blood sugar - not bad, just lower...that's one reason they recommend eating every few hours. You might try grabbing a couple of crackers when you get up in the middle of the night - instead of waiting until you wake up. Are you already eating before going to bed? Think about how long you're sleeping - this is probably the longest stretch of the day without food.

With my first, I was sooo sick - not just mornings, but all day. . . . until my sister took me out to buy maternity clothes (at about 8 weeks!) Anyway, I found that when I was wearing the loose waist bands/panels, I had far less trouble. Weird, but true.

I hope you find some sort of relief soon!

I just read a book called No More Morning Sickness that had a lot of great ideas in it. I miscarried earlier this year at 15 weeks, and I suffered horrible morning sickness, so I'm trying to learn all I can beforehand before I get pregnant again to see if I can ward it off.

The main theme of the book is to think about all the different kinds of foods and picture eating foods until you find one that won't make you sick. You don't have to be as worried about nutrician in your first trimester. If you ate well before your pregnancy, you have stores of nutrients already in your body, and most of the fetal development takes place in the last 2 trimesters anyway. Plus, for many women, if they can think of something that will stop the nausea, it will make them feel good enough that they can eat healthy food after that.

The kinds of things you should think about when picking a food are characteristics, e.g., hot or cold, sweet or sour, salty or bland, smooth or crunchy, etc. Reading the book will give you ideas of foods in each categories and some real life stories of things some women have found to help. When I was pregnant, crackers made me want to hurl. They stuck to my mouth and made me feel horrible. I did better with fruit, popsicles, and juicy things. Root beer also helped, but make sure you get a brand without caffiene.

What helped me the last time was to have a box of Cheerios by the bed. I would eat a handful or two of them before I even got out of bed. And then I'd eat them during the day so i would never have an empty stomach.

Good luck! I remember how that feels!:(

Sea Bands are like sweat bands with a built in bead to provide accupressure on the wrists to prevent nausea. They are used by the British Navy. You can buy them at Walmart (just ask the pharmacisits to find them for you, cause sometime they keep them behind the counter) They really work, even for motion sickness (ie cars and such) They cost around 5.00 and it even says pregnancy on the box.No drugs, non invasive...so give it a try! Congratulations... and I hope this helps! It did me!

My mid-wife told me to drink pink lemonade (not sure why the pink), she said it worked for some women. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me, only time did. But this too shall pass and congratulations!

again, congrats. here's another option if nothing else works for you to consider: go to your local accupuncturist or chinese herbalist and ask for "Culing" tablets. they are cheap--about $5/box of 10 doses. as always, check with your doctor first and show her the list of ingredients (in english on the side of the box; mostly herb, flower, and root extracts) before taking. just because it's herbal doesn't always mean it's safe for you! good luck!

With my first I drank Barques Red Creme Soda and it would help a little.

8.5 years later with my second the only thing that worked was sleep. I slept through that entire 39 weeks. If I got tired, I got very sick. Oh, and I drank VERY flat caffine free coke. It is strange now that my 5 y/o will NOT drink anything that is carbonated.

Stange. Everyone is different.

Ladies, you have all been so helpful! I appreciate all your suggestions. Unfortunatley, not much is working for me so I'm just riding it out. My doctor did switch my vitamins to something less volatile and added a B6 supplement. I'm hoping that helps. In the meantime, I'm sniffing lemons, grating ginger, napping, eating small amounts, etc. etc. etc!! Thanks again!

Have you tired chewing gum? I was extemely sick with my first pregnancy to the point I missed 4 weeks of work. Lived on townhouse crackers, gatoraid, and jello. Nothing helped. I probably had it so severe because I later found out I was pregnant with twins. With my second pregnancy, I was also sick, although not as bad. I found that besides the coke, potato chips, and peppermints, chewing Double Mint gum helped to ease the nausea. At least the gum doesn't have any added calories:)

Good luck and congratulations!

Yeah, I'm chewing the gum, too. It's a temporary fix, but with TMJ I can only chew for so long and I have to spit it out.

The vitamin I was switched to made me sicker than the first so now I'm going to try a regular multi-vitamin. If that doesn't work, the nurse said to take two flintstone chewables every day. Oy! In the meantime, I'm on the blandest of diets and I can't wait until I finally can eat again!! Again, thanks for all the support and suggestions.

Lisa

Ok - I picked up the seabands last night. Man are these things tight! Anyway, last night was the worst night I've had as far as the vomitting went. I don't think the two are related so I'm willing to give these bands a try. I've got them on now and I'm hoping they do the trick. Thanks!
