Was listening the other day, creepy much?

Here we are
In a room full of strangers
Standing in the dark
Where your eyes couldn't see me
Well, I had to follow you
Though you did not want me to
But that won't stop my lovin' you
I can't stay away

I never paid attention to the Barbie Girl hit before and yep, that's one of the odd ones. Seems all you need is a catchy tune and the strangest things can be hits.

This one is not a love song but I knew a few couples who made it their song.

Oh, I watch you there
Through the window
And I stare at you
Wear nothing but you
Wear it so well
Tied up and twisted
The way I like to be
For you, for me, come crash
Into me

Several months ago, The Rolling Stones removed Brown Sugar from their set list. They've been playing it since 1970. Back then, people who doid't listen to the song think "brown sugar" refers to heroin. But, it's clear in the lyrics it's about the horrors & violence of slavery. The Rolling Stones (or their publicist) felt it was time to stop playing the song in today's climate as the lyrics aren't a upbeat and celebratory as the music is.

"Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in the market down in New Orleans
Skydog slaver know he's doin' all right
Hear him whip the women, just around midnight

Brown sugar. . ." You are going to have to Google for the rest.

Slide ~ Goo Goo Dolls

Most don't realize it was about an unwanted teenage pregnancy and the decision the couple tries to make on what to do.

I never knew to the lyrics of this song, other than da da da da da “brown sugar”. Hot d@mn. I get why they would want to remove it from their set list. They sang this for years though- that is just as nuts.

Update, because I found the lyrics Brown Sugar is indeed messed up.

The 70's had a lot of creepy songs, My Sharona from the Knack is just ewww, thought it was icky when I was young too.

Jessie is a friend,
Yeah, I know he's been a good friend of mine
But lately something's changed
It ain't hard to define
Jessie's got himself a girl and I want to make her mine

And she's watching him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body, I just know it!
And he's holding her in his arms late, late at night

You know I wish that I had Jessie's girl
I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Where can I find a woman like that?

I'll play along with the charade
That doesn't seem to be a reason to change
You know I feel so dirty when they start talking cute
I wanna tell her that I love her but the point is probably moot

The Rolling Stones removing Brown Sugar -- which is probably the MOST ANTI-slavery song ever written -- is a perfect example of cancel culture gone berserk.

Social media geniuses just knew slavery was mentioned -- but didn't listen to the song enough or lacked the cognitive skills to actually learn what it was really about. It mentioned slavery, therefore it must be a bad thing.

The band knows how mindless social media is, so they stopped playing it for fear they would be misunderstood.

"I never would write that song now," Jagger told Rolling Stone in 1995. "I would probably censor myself."

I read the lyrics, as someone who isn’t a Rolling Stones fan, and I don’t read anti-slavery in there, and to say it’s the most anti-slavery song would be a stretch.

Thanks. I went back and read the lyrics again and deleted my post. I think it was my strong bias against slavery that made me misinterpret.

I think most people would find they are shocked over a lot of what we consider just a good tune because it's rare we ever really really pay close attention. I made the thread because I'm always pointing out weird lyrics to DH and my kids, not that I catch it all the time but I do often enough to realize there is some really weird stuff in hit songs.

I remember liking it when it first came out since the melody is catchy until actually listening to the lyrics.Ick. Now I just get mad. 😡 😂

Barbie Girl is another of my most hated songs.
