Quiet Cove Pool & proof of age

I don't think he was upset at being carded; I think he was annoyed at having to go to the room for the photo ID. Most of us don't carry our photo IDs around the ship. Guess they couldn't take the KTTW card into the Cove Cafe and scan it for the security photo.

I'm just glad to see evidence of enforcement.

I was going to mention that in my other post...why didn't the CM just swipe his card somewhere to see the photo that popped up.

I guess if you are a young looking adult you should be prepared that being carded may be a possibility (either at the clubs or any other adult area)....and either the CM to swipe the card somewhere or keep a photo ID handy. I know it is a pain but just one of those things in life to deal...could be worse!!!

If he wasn't being disruptive, which I doubt he was, I think they should have given him the benefit of the doubt. The whole reason for it being adults is to provide a peaceful environment, not because anything there is inherently inappropriate for minors. I would personally have been mortified.. Sorry it happened to him.

I have to respectfully disagree with the bolded statement. The Quiet Cove pool is often far from a "peaceful" environment. Sometimes it can be, but many times it's quite a "rowdy" place. I've seen some very loud & obnoxious antics at the Quiet Cove pool on our cruises. On one cruise, I commented that the Goofy pool was often more peaceful and quiet than the Quiet Cove pool area.

That said, it is designated as an adults-only area for those who want to enjoy the amenities whether it happens to be quiet or noisy on that particular day. I am surprised to hear that they might be carding those who may be look too young unless they are beginning to have problems with younger teens in the adult-only areas.

OP, sorry that your son was hassled - but I am glad that there was some sort of enforcement. There are reasons that people hang out at the quiet cove areas... :)

I'm glad to hear they carded. Hopefully this will become a fleet-wide policy and help to keep the adult areas 18 and over. Too many people think that those rules don't apply to them, or that there kids are quiet so it doesn't matter. Disney has big ships and most of the ships are dedicated to families and kids. Three small areas are adult only and that policy needs to be enforced. If I'm in an adult area, I don't want to see kids- period. I don't care how quiet or nice their parents think they are.

Amen to this. There are many of us "adults only" cruisers who choose DCL for the beauty of its ships, service, quality and entertainment experiences. We also choose DCL because it promotes the adult-only areas - we come and expect to have these areas reserved for guests over 18 years old. We have been on 14 DCL cruises and, for the most part, guests understand that, even though their teenager is "respectful" or "adult-acting," they aren't allowed, and do not belong, in the adult-specific areas. There are teenagers (and their parents) who nonetheless do not believe that these rules apply to them. We never hesitate to let an officer or CM know if there is someone who appears younger than 18 in these areas, and to its credit, DCL politely asks for verification of age. DCL's enforcement of this policy is simply a means to ensure that one of the services it is selling - reserved adult-area only experiences - actually exists.

While I agree that 18 means 18, I would never be so bothered by someone who looked young being in the area that I'd have to act as the "adult-ony enforcement police". If DCL wants to enforce it, that's fine but I'm not going to waste my vacation being that concerned about whether or not a 17 year old is lounging by the quiet cove pool.

Do you also let DCL know that there are people wearing shorts in the dining rooms? (The horror!)

"Quiet Cove" is the name of the area--it no way implies that everyone there is quiet. No, I don't like the rowdy drunks who are sometimes there, but if they are "of age" there is certainly more latitude granted as to their behavior.

That said, it is an "adult only" area, and I'm delighted to see that DCL FINALLY seems to be getting the idea that this needs to be enforced. No, under 18s shouldn't hang out there...but 2 year olds in strollers shouldn't be in the area either!

Oh, it's no bother. All you need to do is quietly and politely point out the infraction to a crew member. The satisfaction that results from knowing that people will be able to enjoy the cruise that was promised to them more than makes up for any minor inconvenience.

As a person who looks MUCH younger than her real age, I understand the getting carded thing, and even being inconvenienced due to looking young (had my ID broke in half when I was 23 because the guy said there was absolutely no way in Hell that I was 21 and as late as 30, I've been asked what high school I went to... still, at 34, get blank stares whenever I tell somebody my real age for the first time). But the CM making him walk all the way back to the room to go get his photo ID is ridiculous. Perhaps the CM is new and doesn't know that he can take the KTTW card to the bar and ask them to swipe it? I don't know, but I would have been FURIOUS... and again, I've had my ID broken because they thought it was a fake (it wasn't), but I think I'd be madder if I had to walk all the way back to my room to show something that they have access to with a quick scan of the KTTW card!

Ok I must have gotten bad info from DCL. I just talked to them because we are taking my son and 3 friends on the Magic next spring. Three of them are 18 but the 4th won't be 18 until 21 days after the cruise. I specifically asked what the policy is regarding them attending the nightclub shows, Serenity Bay, etc. He told me they could attend the shows but not order/consume alcohol. He implied they could also go to the Cove and Serenity Bay but no alcohol;they won't be carded for just being there. He also said they don't card at the Fitness Center. They would not be able to go to Palo, however, which they don't care about.

Did I get bad info?

Trust me, I am a rule follower but I know DCL is flexible when kids are very close to the age break so that's why I am asking. This kid looks older than the other 3 guys but will be 3 weeks shy of 18. I'd really like a clear answer...perhaps I need to call again.:confused3

I'm gonna throw my opinions out there, and I understand that people will disagree with me, but that's the beauty of the boards, right?! ;)

I think your best bet is for the guys to go ahead and go to the adult areas and make sure that they're not doing ANYTHING that will draw attention to them. If they ask to see all of their IDs, then they need to show them. If the one gets kicked out, then they should all go to the Vibe and hang out for a while.

Again, I don't see the point in hassling a nearly 18 year old kid, but that's just me. Others DO see the point, which is why Disney has to crack down. But I suggest they just go, have a good time, and not worry about it. If they have to go to Vibe, then they can deal with that when the time comes.

When I went on my first Disney Cruise, I was hanging out at the adult area with my family (I was 19 at the time) and I was turned away at the bar. I was trying to get a COKE, not a beer. They told me I looked young and had to prove I was over 18.

Honestly, I guess it is a good thing they check- although I was totally insulted at the time!

All of us know that the Quiet Cove pool area has limited resources (i.e. the size of the pool, the space in the hot tubs and the number of loungers and areas to sit). If there is a "17 year old lounging by the quiet cove pool" he or she may very well be negatively impacting the enjoyment of those adults who should be in the area - the area is simply too small on some cruises even when only adults are present, let alone those under 18. And where does one draw the line? At a single teenager? More than two? Whether they are well behaved or not? Some, therefore, do not consider it a "waste" of their vacation to report it, but rather an opportunity to assure their own enjoyment of the area.

Just a thought: I wonder what the CM's would do if I (being 44 yerars old) decided i wanted to hang out at Vibe for the afternoon? Even if I promised to behave, do you think they'd let me stay? Personally, I'd LOVE to spend some time in Vibe, it looks great, but I realize that this space is reserved for teens only, so will hang at Quiet Cove instead....and I'd like to think teens under 18 would adhere to policy as well.

:thumbsup2

He just went back to the room. He was a little annoyed though.

He wanted to bring his passport with him to Serenity Bay and I was worried he might lose it so I told him no. No one asked him anything about age there.

I photocopied my driving licence last year when I needed it .. I'm always losing things so thought this the best option.

Personally, I'm really glad they checked his age .. I love having the adult only area free of youngsters!! :)

So as a 19 year old who looks like a 15 year old, maybe I should plan to carry around my license? Good to know!

My DD is 24 years old but has Down Syndrome and still looks very young for her age, we sometimes still get asked if we need a kids menu in restaurants. Since she will be with us everywhere on the ship, I will keep her ID Card with her KTTW card and keep them with us at all times. If we are asked to prove her age it will be easy to do so. Since she looks so young fellow cruisers may think she doesn't belong in the Adult areas but I can't help that. Hopefully we won't have any issues.

we were on 2 weeks ago and there were a couple of girls that I swear had to be under 18. They were quiet and kept to themselves but had neon wristbands on (I'm guessing they had to do with the teen clubs?) but they were never questioned (at least not while I was there). seems like it may be enforced kind of randomly
