Its our 14th time to Florida and we still haven't managed to clear customs and get our car/get to accommodation in less than about 3 and a half hours! Any tips from the uk Disers? Also we are usually starving by the time we pick up the car and was wondering if there are any decent/easy to get to places to eat near the airport?

Which airport? Orlando International or Sanford?

When you get to Immigration choose the queue on the very right, it is next to the USA residents queue which is usually really short, when it has finished the immigration person will call people from your queue to go through there. We did this last year and were through immigration in less than 10 minutes. :cool1:

Oooh good point - I meant Orlando International! Thanks for the customs tip Jen - will go in the queue on the right :thumbsup2!

:scared1: To get to car takes us approx 1 hour, 90 mins if we don't get a good pass thru customs. then 30 mins max to hotel, so always under 2 hours total, sometimes 90 mins.
I guess you don't use car rental Express or Fastbreak? that saves at least 1 hour when the desks are busy. Join the scheme for the rental co. you are going with, just walk right to thr front at Dollar or with Budget totally bypass the desk and go straight for your keys in the car park kiosk.

Try get a seat on plane nearer front than back and walk briskly to Immigration.

Immigration, go to right lane, its next to US/cabin staff/wheelchair, when they have all been processed they then pull UK travellers from the next line. doesn't always work can work well.

We've got MCO down to a fine art (average time 1 hour from wheels touching down, quickest ever 35 minutes!), so hopefully my tips will help (although obviously you need to have some luck on your side, too).

We tend to fly Virgin PE which is a big advantage as it means we're first off the plane (due to the configuration of the Orlando route flights, PE pax are allowed off the plane ahead of UC pax). That then means first through immigration, bags off first, first through customs, and so on. On the occasions when we've flown economy, we've learnt through experience that being near the back of the plane can easily double the amount of time it takes to clear the airport. Being last off the plane has a knock-on and cumulative effect on everything else. So, my first piece of advice is to get seats at the front of the plane. If you manage to snag the ones right next to the exit you will be the very first off the plane because they'll need to clear that space for others to pass through.

Jen's advice about immigration is quite right, but it's worth taking a moment to assess the situation as you come down into the hall. People tend to be attracted to the middle lanes and, bizarrely, to queues. Look to the far ends (both left and right) and you may even see some empty, or near empty lanes.

Once through immigration, you need to collect your bags and, obviously, you need a bit of luck here. The baggage handlers at MCO are extremely efficient, so even if your bags are amongst the last off, you shouldn't have too long to wait.

Next up is customs. When we've flown PE, we've always passed straight through with no line, but when we've flown economy I've noticed that there's usually more than one line. That information isn't necessarily going to help you if there are two (or more) lines of equal length, but I thought I'd mention it.

Once through customs, it's no longer necessary to relinquish your bags - you can take them with you to the main terminal. You have to manoeuvre them up an escalator and onto the tram, so try to travel light - they will force you to give them up if your party has too much luggage.

Whilst waiting for the monorail, move as far forward as possible. You'll then be in the first carriage and ahead of everyone else alighting the train as you enter the main terminal. Who are you flying with? Is your car hire booked independently? There are two sides to the terminal - A and B - and they are mirror images of one another. If you've booked car hire independently, it doesn't matter whether you use the car rental firm's desk on side A or side B. Due to the location of the monorail stop, it's quicker to head for side B. Sign up for your rental firm's express facility (they're all called different things, but they effectively allow you to jump the queue and they're free). If you've booked a package you may have to use a dedicated desk (I'd suggest checking with your tour operator if you're not sure).

As far as food is concerned, there's nothing to stop you using the airport's facilities in the main terminal, although I'd probably be inclined to sort out the hire car paperwork first. Simply head back up to level 2 and then collect the car from the garage when you've finished eating.

Oh, also meant to ask where you'll be staying. The quickest route to most places is going to be the 417 Central Florida Greeneway.

Wayne, we are renting with Budget this time, do you have to pay extra for Fastbreak or are there any special terms and conditions you have to meet? I don't know what my Dad gets up to when he is the queue but my Mum and I usually wait outside, it takes him about an hour and a half to two hours and he often complains the people on the desk were keeping him talking. Customs is usually an hour for us and then travel to where we are staying and looking for somewhere to eat on the way all adds up. Last time customs kept us for two hours (tin of M&S Spaghetti Bolognese/Chilli Con Carne made with Brazilian Beef), car hire another two hours (Dad got talking to the car rental guy) and then Dad got lost on way to villa and we had an argument with check-in staff! It took us about six hours from landing to villa arrival and then Mum and I just went to bed and left Dad to get on with food shopping lol!

Debs - WOW :worship:!

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are flying with Virgin but not PE. Row 35 - Don't know why my Dad (are you noticing a pattern here?) decided to choose these seats but he somehow decided they must be near the exit - they are a near AN exit, but not THE exit. I can't believe we have been going to Florida for 15 years and we still can't sort him out. Also I STILL manage to get every suitcase off the carousel from the far end whilst my Dad is planted right near where they come off and manages to miss them all :confused3 . Then my Mum has a go at my Dad *** I have a heart condition and I shouldn't be lifting suitcases and so on and so forth. It really is a delight!

Car is booked with Budget and I am pretty sure it is booked independently from Virgin. Perhaps my Mum and I will sit and eat at the airport while Dad has a nice chat with the car rental people :thumbsup2.

We have our own home but we rent it out and can't get in until our third night so we are staying at the new Lake Eve Resort on I-Drive (the Lake Buena Vista end). Thanks so much again for your help :goodvibes !

Fastbreak is free. 2 ways of doing it, you can register on their site but it says you are supposed to do 3 rentals before you can do it, people have posted this is not needed. I am waiting for mine coming thru post, doing 3 rentals with them this year so decided to join.
Other way is like we did last year thru this link https://registrations.carrentalsupport.com/index.php?partnercode=11&bookedBrand=Budget You get nothing thru post it just pre-registers the 1 rental and all you get is an email confirmation. I booked thru USrentacar and had no problem using this link, not sure if you have booked with another company, just try it.

I think you've given a lot of the answers to why it takes so long yourself now! Why are you taking a tin of M&S Spaghetti Bolognese/Chilli Con Carne made with Brazilian Beef along? :confused3 The only food we take along is chocolate (I'm originally from Belgium, I can't go more than a week without the proper good stuff) and that is an item perfectly allowed by customs. You are making it hard on yourself by packing items containing veg and meat!
Chatting with the car hire guy? As if it doesn't take long enough already. As others have said, get the fastbreak or whatever card for the right car hire place. It's free, just sign up on the website of the car hire company. It does take a few weeks for the card to arrive so bear that in mind.
Getting lost: get a sat nav (we bring our own, our mobile has a build in gps and we just get the right tomtom maps for north america) or hand the map to someone who can figure it all out. I've got some good free maps from the AAA but they look totally different to your average maps over here, so it took some time to figure it out.

Take all the advice DEB and others have given already, it is spot on!

Well we don't usually take tins of food - I have special dietary requirements and from experience, we learned that its best to have something for the first 48 hours incase we can't get to Whole Foods and to avoid me ending up ill for the rest of the holiday and ruining it for everyone. Anyway, it won't happen again and the minute it posed a problem we said okay just take it and chuck it out but there was a huge embarrassing hullaballoo. We never took any veg and we had checked out the US Customs website before hand and only took a couple of things we knew were allowed (which is why we took a tin of food containing Brazilian, not British (it is banned) Beef). That is what all the fuss was about, they wouldn't let us go because they couldn't work out if it was illegal or not. Anyway, I don't want to go off topic and like I said, it won't happen again. As for the talking thing, that isn't me and when you ask my Dad he says they are the ones talking to him  . He also hates Sat Nav and won't listen to anyone with a map or a clue where we are going which is why I'm going to have a go at driving this time. At least I'm trying to sort things out this time and get a bit of advice to make it easier for us all, :confused3 ! You live and you learn :) .

I fully understand now why you take some food along. I just wondered... You do quite often see people getting onto planes taking a suitcase full of mushy peas, baked beans, ... And I can never figure out why.

As for your dad, well, I guess he's stuck in a few ways, not much that can be done. But the other tips given (about which lines to take and such) should hopefully reduce you transit time considerably. :thumbsup2

Actually Neo, now that I think about it in future I might send my Dad the day before so he can pick us up at the airport - 24 hours should be long enough for him to get everything sorted, eh?

lol! we have some friends who are actually doing the exact opposite. They are flying out a few days earlier so they can get the car hire and the villa sorted in a relaxed manner and have a few days of sanity.

Good luck, I'm sure it will all work out. And hey, whenever things take a while in the car hire queue or check in, I just remind myself of what it is to come soon after: A BRILLIANT HOLIDAY! that gets me through (the queues on the way home on the other hand...)

Wooowww... I never knew it take so long to get the rental car at MCO airport. Sounds like we are going to have a hard time waiting there especially
with kids.

How about at the end of the vacation ? Does it take long to return the car at MCO ? Our flight will depart at around 1800 in the evening.
How much time do we need to "reserve" for handling the returning car process at the airport ?? Don't want to miss our flight.
I was initially thinking to get to the airport at around 1530pm... would that be ok ??

you only drop the car off at the airport when you go home, they check it over and thats it.

We fly with virgin and do downtown disney check in so we only have to go straight through security once at the airport

Another way of cutting time is, when you get through immigration whoever is the driver should go straight to the car rental desk to sort the car out and leave the others in the group to get the luggage, then meet up again near the exit doors, if you are like us, the luggage is virtually empty anyway, ready to fill up with goodies :thumbsup2

That's precisely what we always did, TOONMADLAD, until they did away with the requirement for the second baggage reclaim.
