Tracey, thanks for your concern. Yes, my in-laws do live in Metairie, all of my husband's family lives there. They're right now in a hotel in Florida, but tomorrow they'll be moving to a condo my mom owns in South Carolina because they can't afford the hotel much longer. MIL's house had at least 4 feet of water, but it had gone down with pumping last night to about a foot or 2. Well today that 17th St. Canal, which had flooded into New Orleans yesterday, flooded into their area today-they're only a few blocks away from it. So odds are the water level in their home rose again today. Their business had about 3 feet of water in it before the levee broke yesterday, but no word on what that is like now. They own a transportation company though, so all the limos, cars, vans, etc. are flooded and ruined. SIL's house had minimal flood damage, less than a foot in their home, but there are huge holes in the roof, and since they're predicting rain there in the next few days looks like their house will get more water damage too. No word though on the rest of the family's homes yet as BIL (he's a Jeff. Parish cop) hasn't been able to get out to those areas or hear from others yet. It's so sad to have all this happening to everyone down there. But really, don't feel bad about going on your vacation, we all have to go on with our lives despite the tragedies that occur, regardless of how badly we feel about them. I know my in-laws would be thrilled to know someone can go to WDW and enjoy themselves, even though that's not an option for them at this time-they're just happy to all be together and safe.
KristiKelly, I read it on a link someone posted on these boards, but it was before Madison was born, so at least 18 months ago so I don't think I could find it now. It was an article about ear pressure on flights with babies and it said that if they sleep during the takeoff/landing then their ears don't adjust to the pressure, it just all builds up. So then when you land there's all this pressure in their ears and they're in a lot of pain. It said to definitely nurse/bottle feed them during both takeoff and landing to make them suck, which relieves the pressure or if they won't eat then give them a pacifier, or water, juice, etc. Well Madison was too young for water/juice then so I gave her a pacifier, but on the flight where she slept she refused the pacifier too so I was really nervous about her ears but she was okay. (About the water, her dr told us right before we went to Disney not to give her water at all since she was breastfed, that too much water in a baby's system can dilute their blood and kill them! That scared me enough to not give her any water on the trip, but she did say about an ounce/day would be alright if she was really sweaty, but breastmilk was preferable.)
