ETA - After reading the reason for the thread, I think I should add that when a stranger asks "how far" something is, I assume they mean distance and so I answer that way. When I'm talking to my family or friends about "how far" something is, we almost always are talking about how long it will take us to get there. The only exception is when we're talking about going somewhere on foot.
