Ok, hope I get this question out right?

We have been looking into DVC and heres my question. Lets say I buy 150 points which equal a week for 1st week of March for our family for example. Does DVC promise somewhere in the contract that your 150 points will always equal at same week of March or can they say in a few years turn around a say we have changed our points system and now for that same 1st week in March you must now have 200 points to stay a week and so therefore we inturn would have to buy additional points which I think would not be fair. Is this example possible when buying DVC? In another words our you all garenteeed that 150 points will always get you that same week and not go up on points forcing you to then buy more points when in turn makes your furture vacation not what you had 1st paid for?
I had asked this question to a DVC rep and she said she would get back to me on that question and I am still waiting to here from her?
If we could get an honest answer to this question and were told that we would never have to buy additional points for the same week from why we would buy the amount of points then we would I think for sure want to buy DVC
Thanks for you helpl

They "can" change the point structure, but it if they change one category they have to change another... For example:

If a studio is 12 points per night, a 1 bedroom is 22 points per night and a 2 bedroom is 30 points per night... they CAN change them but in order to add points to one cat they would have to remove them from another for example... if they want to make the Studio 15 points they would have to lower the 1 or 2 bedroom by 3 points to equal it out...They can not up one category without lowering another one by the same amount of points... (at least that was how it was explained to us)...

As the OP stated, if it goes up somewhere, it must go down somewhere else.

The only way it will go up that week is if Easter Falls within that time frame.

Which I don't think Easter has been that early!LOL

To answer the question honestly, there is a slim possibility that the number of points could change. As mentioned before, all resort have a total number of points assigned to them. This number can never change unless they add more units to the resort. But DVC can rearrange points from different seasons and unit sizes. But this has happened only once in the history of DVC. Years ago at BWV they rearranged the points to allot for Standard and Preferred views. Other than that instance, it has never happened. Since you are talking about the 1st week in March, I guess I would tell you that you can be pretty assured that the number of points for that week will not change. Now if you were talking about the last week of March, that would be different. Points do get a bit rearranged when considering holidays. If Easter was the last week of March the points would reflect that.

OOPS - Looks like I was wrong. I thought that the change happened at BWV. But Doc below states it happened at OKW. He's definitely the expert.

Yes, the points could be reallocated to change. It has happened only once- at OKW in 1996 where some nights were raised an others were lowered. As already explained, if any nights are raised, others MUST be lowered to keep the system in balance.

Here is a recent thread with more information about DVC Point Re-allocation.

What you may not be used to is that you're not buying "March" or a "1-bedroom week," you're buying "points." They can be used any time of year, but at busy seasons they'll buy fewer resort nights, and they'll buy different numbers of nights at different resorts. As you've read above, the number of points per night for a certain class of room at a certain date at a certain resort can change, as long as the total number of points being charged stays balanced. That means your "buying" power will stay the same when averaged over a year, but it might vary for a particular calendar date.

The short answer is yes. OP focused on the first week of March, which I think you said is just "for example". If you look at the points charts (elsewhere on Disboards), you could compare one year to another to get an idea how they might change. Generally, they are higher at holiday times (easter, x-mas, etc). Where those holidays float (most notably easter), the points will change. We usually go 3rd week of April (MA vacation week), but next year that's easter week so points are way high (plus WDW will be mobbed) so it's out of the question for us. While this is discouraging, I think it's "fair' because we knew that up front. As another OP said, you're not buying a week as with some other timeshares, but are buying points to use when you want. I like this extra flexibility, even with this slight downside. Don't forget about banking and borrowing - if you can't go a certain year because points are too high when you want to go, you can bank and use following year (or borrow from following year, or even pay cash for a part of the week). :paw:

Actually all the units sizes for any resort could go up during this time by simply changing another time of year.

Thanks for all of your input it really helps me understand better now!
Have a magical day! :wizard:
