I'm having trouble finding a good protein to include in my breakfast. I'm not a vegetarian, but I can't stomach meat early in the day for some reason. And, I've never really been into eggs either. Lately, I've been eating a yogurt with some grape nuts and a piece of fruit. What would you recommend adding to that?

What do you all eat for protein in the morning?

Wheaties has lots of protien. It's not really good tastewise, but if you add berries or something, it might be okay.

peanut butter on an apple or banana or some bread stuff is always good. I tend to also eat hard boiled egg white (I give the yolks to my lab)

Peanut butter and toast... when it is warm and the pb melts that is wonderful. YUM YUM

I have an Ab's magazine that says oatmeal is an excellant thing for breakfast. As long as you don't load a bunch of sugar into it. I have been eating it with raisans, it doesn't taste the greatest but it helps.

Thanks for the ideas. I think I'll try the peanut butter on toast idea...I think I can stomach that. And, also the hard boiled egg white- I hadn't thought of that.

Not exactly sure how much protein is in this but my favorite breakfast is a ripe banana, a Dannon strawberry yogurt, and about a cup of 1% milk, all blended together. Very satisfying and tastes good too.

How about a smootie made with soy milk. Soy milk contains quite a bit protein and is good in other areas. But cows milk also has lots of protein but more fat unless you like skim like me LOL.

A chocolate smootie with chocolate soy milk(or cows milk though that would have lots of fat since most are whole milk unless you add chocolate to skim milk) banana and a table spoon of peanut butter(or better almond butter) would be a good tastey breakfast.

I would think only eating the whites of the egg lowers protein a lot always figured most of the protein is in the yolks since that is the true animal portion. :confused3

I agree with peanut butter toast. :) YUMMY. I ate it nearly every morning while pregnant since I could stand a whole lot to eat early but if I didn't eat I was sick all afternoon at work.

slice bananas on it too for the added fruit.

I have to say again, thanks for these great ideas. My focus this week is on eating breakfast. I find that I just don't enjoy it, but I know that it is very important. I think I'll go toast me a slice of bread and try the peanut butter this morning. Keep the suggestions coming. I don't know about others, but I know I get tired of eating the same thing all the time.

Does anyone know of a good place online to check the protein levels of various food items? I just did a basic google search, but didn't find much.

I had 1 c. of skim milk this morning with my iced coffee, plus a 6 oz yogurt mixed with 1/2 c. grapenuts (so good!), and a bananna, and I just wanted to do a quick search of the protein grams.

Not sure about checking somewhere online but when I started my journey in February of 2003 I met with a nutritionist and she recommended picking up a book published by the American Diabetic Association. I don't have it here at work but it is a book that has nutritional breakdowns - carbs, fat, fiber, protein, etc....-on just about every food you can think of including packaged foods (by brand) and many restaurant offerings. I would suspect you can find on the ADA website.

Also, as for protein you might want to try soynut butter. I switched to this in 2003 as it has way less fat than peanut butter and unless you are eating natural peanut butter there is usually a fair bit of sugar added. I'm at the point now where when I do occasionally eat peanut butter it "tastes funny".

I like cottage cheese in the a.m. That might work. I love the peanut butter and will put that on celery for something to crunch.

When I am on the fly, I will get some of the string cheese, or cubes of cheese, canned chicken, turkey lunch meat, left over chicken breasts. You can have these for breakfast or lunch or any time.

Any kinds of nuts will have protein. Almonds are very good for you too! Most nutrition labels will list the protein too. Surprisingly enough, Rye Trisuits have 3 g protein in 6 crakers.

Try Fitday You'll be able to track protein, fat and carbs. Use it to journal, or just to check :) Have fun!

Thanks for the protein counters.

I had a toasted english muffin with peanut butter this morning and it was excellent!!! Just what I wanted!

peanut butter + a carb
cottage cheese + a carb
protein shake made with whey protein powder and yogurt and some fruit
egg whites with 1 yolk (boiled or fried in olive oil)

A little bit of fat with the protein aids with digestion. The combo of carbs and protein keeps you satiated longer.

GL!

I never even thought of peanut butter on toast! Thanks I'm going to go have that right now.
