Hi guys, I need all the help you can provide. It's a long story, but the jest of it is...I just booked a long weekend in Orlando for my 13yo daughter and I to visit Universal for the first time. I haven't even bought tickets yet, just hotel and rental car. Please give me all your tips, and tell me the best ticket to buy. Any dining not to be missed, I'm sure a sit down restaurant is out at this point...
I'm so lost, I can't believe I did this, I'm a planner, and I'm sooooo unprepared.

First off, RELAX!!!! You have a hotel and a car. That's basically all you need for Universal until you get there.

How many days are you going (and how soon)? Are you staying on-site or off-site? What do you want to do while at Universal - i.e. just the HP stuff or everything? What is your tolerance for thrill rides?

Universal dining is NOT like Disney dining. Most restaurants (even the sit-down ones) you can walk up and get on a waiting list. Some take reservations ahead of time, but that is a couple of days or weeks ahead of time, not 6 months ahead of time (yes, I'm looking at YOU, Mouse). My favorite restaurant is Toothsome Chocolate Emporium. They don't take reservations and at park close there is sometimes a bit of a wait (45 minutes - 1 hour seems common), but I've also had a 10 minute wait. Most restaurants will text you when your table is ready so you can walk around and explore (and shop) while waiting.

Can't begin to tell you how much better that makes me feel. We are not staying onsite as I was able to book off site for considerably less. We are going to be in Orlando three full days and are open to doing the park each day. There is a chance we may do a half day at Disney Quest. We definitely would like to see as much as possible. We love thrill rides, and both would like to see HP stuff. Are there any parking tips or quick service dining spots you can recommend? BTW, I'm definitely putting that Chocolate Emporium on our list.
Thank you!

Also, does anyone know what crowds will be like? Is the park to park thing something you would recommend?

Cheapest way to buy is usually Undercovertourist. They do email tickets and real tickets in the snail mail. So depending on how quick, check their prices out. Otherwise, more than 1 day tickets are around $20 cheaper on Universal's website than at the gate.

Most of the restaurants can be booked on your phone, or ask at the hotel. I've done same day, except for Christmas time. That's when I book more in advance. The restaurants are not like Disney, each may only be booked a month or so out. Since they are not all owned by one entity, each has their own time as to far out to book.

Get a map when you first enter, to get an idea of where you want to go. Thunder Falls is one of my go to, as well as the Potter quick services. Check the food stickie at the top, she usually has the most up to date menus. See which restaurants interest you, and go from there.

Again, relax, it's a great time to visit, enjoy the parks, and if a Potter fan, see if you can splurge for a 2 park ticket. Riding the Potter train between the parks is neat. Plus, if you feel one of the parks is more busy, hope to the other. They are only about a 10 minute walk apart.

Since you are not staying onsite. Make sure you give yourself extra time to get from the parking garage, through the security, and into City Walk. While there are moving walkways, it does take some time, and sometimes the security can also have a line, and be crowded.

Have fun, and take your time, sometimes use the single rider, after you've ride to together. I hope you both have an awesome time.

If you are an HP fan, you MUST do the park to park ticket as that is the only way to experience the Hogwarts Express (and make sure to take it both ways, it's different).

Three days is a probably the perfect amount of time to experience Universal without rushing. Plan on spending a full day on HP alone - the detailing in that area is unbelievable.

As the above poster mentioned, Undercover Tourist is probably one of the best places to get tickets. I believe they have a buy 2 days, get 1 day free deal. And if you get to Universal and fall in love with it (like a lot of people do), consider upgrading your tickets to an annual pass before you leave. The cost isn't too much more than a 3 day ticket and the perks are pretty sweet. Depending on the level, you get discounted or free parking, discounts on hotels, food and merchandise, etc. Just watch the black-out dates on the lower level passes.

Also, this time of year, there is the Mardi Gras parade (nightly, I believe?) on the Studios side. You also want to look at the park calendar as there are (free) Mardi Gras concerts scheduled that will impact the crowd levels.

tomorrow through Monday the 13th

Other than Mardi Gras, crowds should be good. Just pay close attention to the wait time boards. There is also a wait time Universal ap that you might want to get.

Early admission is a great time for the Harry Potter part that is open and since you won't have early admission, go to the park that doesn't have it as soon as the parks open...and if your kids are HP fans, you'll want to get the park to park pass for sure.

I'm taking my 13 year old daughter to Universal for the first time in March.

I wouldn't worry about Disney Quest. As soon as you get to Universal I too would chose the park without early admission and head straight back to HP. I would buy DD an interactive wand in Olivander's and spend a good deal of time using it, visiting the shops and ridding the HP rides then take the Hogwart's Express to the other side and visit the other HP area. I agree Toothsome in City Walk is on our list and you shouldn't have a problem without ressies this time of year especially if you go a bit off meal hours. Also, make sure to have a butter beer of some sort. We are going to eat at Three Broomstick's and Leaky Caldron because DD is a big Potter fan. Also make certain to ride the Hogwart's Express the other way during your stay as each way is different. Of course you should see the rest of the park including shows and rides! Enjoy your time together!

The Universal web site has a ticket promotion going on "buy two days park to park tickets get two days free". Buying on web site saves money.
Have fun! A last minute trip sounds like great fun for everyone!

Almost all the hotels are sold out for this weekend. I'll be there too.

I'll be there Sunday - Wednesday. I've been checking back for possible price drops and noticed all the room categories are selling out. Very curious to see what the crowds will be like.

I feel silly asking, but how do I know which park has early hours for guests? TIA
