Quick HH Questions?

I'm taking the family to Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort in South Carolina for the first time, May 21-28, 2005. We have booked a non-smoking 2-bedroom villa. Couple of quick questions?

1) What are the various views? Are there water views? Are there actually rooms in the main lodge?

2) Top picks for restaurants?

:smooth: :boat: :cool2:

Yes there are rooms in the main building (although I don't know what size rooms are avalaible there). I believe the views are classified as Woods, pool or Marsh (but i could be wrong). We had a woods view, with some Marsh and loved it. We were one building away from the pool so that was nice.

As far as resturants we did not eat out and about, we went to the grocery store and got food to cook in the room and we had lunch at the snack bar by the pool (which was nice, you can call ahead from the room and head down there to pick it up).

For restaurants, I really liked the Old Oyster Factory, the food was pretty good ( seafood and steaks) and the view over the waterway at sunset was spectacular. My TOP pick for eating on HH would be Chef Gordon's "a private affair", I haven't tried it in it's new location at the Disney beach house, but the time we enjoyed it at one of the grand Villas at DVC it was the best meal by a considerable margin.
There are a number of restaurants just across the walkway/bridge that leads into the DVC resort (less than 3 minutes walk from the resort), I enjoyed the mexican restaurant there.

I'm not real sure, but I believe I remember reading here that the main lodge building has most of the studio/1 BR lockoffs. They can make them into 2BR units, but often rent them out as studios and 1 BR. It seems like I remember reading that if you need a HA 2BR - it'll be in the main lodge, as that is the only place with elevator access.

As for places to eat, there are plenty of great places to eat at HH. We like the Old Oyster Factory and have had a good meal at the German Restaurant (can't remember the name). You might try a search for HH restaurants, there are lots of post that mention some great places to try. When you check in they give you a booklet with menus from many area restaurants, we would look over that and choose places to try. I don't recall having a bad meal yet!

We stayed in a one bedroom in the main lodge and I'm pretty sure we had a studio beside us. We really liked that location, especially after we got hit with some Frances rain while waiting for the shuttle - I was glad we only had a short way back to the room, plus we got the underground parking.

WE are going to HH for our 19th anniversary this weekend. I've heard of Chef Gordon before in earlier post. Could someone provide details...ie...contact number, sample menu, price, reservations required?...etc.

:listen:

Pixie, this link should give you most of the answers you're after http://disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=630411&highlight=+chef++Gordon
I do have to say I thikn you'll be very lucky if you're going this weekend, but it's certainly worth a call to try as it is, IMHO one of the PREMIUM dining options that I've tried anywhere in the world.

If you are able to book, Chef Gordon will provide you with some suggestions of possibilities, but they are only suggestions. He is more than happy to work with any customers to come up with a menu that is individually special to that group. The price I believe is currently $50 per head ( including wine) with a minimum charge of $150 (i.e. less than 4 people still costs you $150). As this is a "special event" reservations are definately needed and as there is only the one Chef Gordon and he only does one group a night it can be difficult to book at late notice.

I wish you the best of luck, for any DVCer going to HH for a special occassion I strongly recommend booking an evening with Chef Gordon at the earliest opportunity to avoid dissapointment.

We will be there the same week. Only 5 nights. :sunny:

There are rooms in the main bldg. We stayed right above the front desk. The main benefit is proximity to Big Murggies.

See you there.

We always make sure to visit Guisseppi's for pizza while in HH.

There are various views. The marsh view can be of water or marshgrass depending on the time of day, and season. Many of the choice location 2 bedrooms are surrounding the pool. Others look out over the marsh. Still others have interior views, which would be of other villas, surrounded by the live oaks covered in the hanging spanish moss. Some villas are along the marina side and from the stairs and bathrooms, you have a view of the boats and marina area - these tend to have porch views that are interior ie live oaks. If I were getting a two bedroom, I would request top floor, marshview, but not in Live Oak Lodge, unless I needed a handicapped room or elevator. At HH this would also mean wrestling all your stuff up there, but they do provide little carts at the parking area to help get it to the steps of your villa. The Live Oak Lodge rooms are nice, but there are more view options out in the detached buildings, plus, you would end up with a lockoff unit in the Lodge, which would have the queen and couch setup in the second bedroom, and two separate balconies. The two bedroom dedicated units in the detached villas have 2 queens in the second bedroom and have one long balcony with rockers and a picnic table on the porch.

Wherever you end up, you will be happy. HH is a great place, and despite all this talk we do about getting the perfect view, location, etc, I find that we are so busy doing things that we don't really sit out that much anyway. Plus the resort is just the perfect size - easy to walk around - nothing is far away, and if you feel like a great view, have a coffee or ice cream on the porch at Community Hall. From there you get a great marsh view, a pool view, a campfire view and easy access to free mug refills! Buy the refillable mugs here - they pay for themselves quickly and are good for a year - because if you go once, you will want to come back!

Restaurants - last visit we had an early bird at Redfish, which was pretty good. 13.95 salad, main course, dessert. Lots of HH places do early birds which work well if you have kids.
I don't like Mellow Mushroom - the pizza was okay but we couldn't survive the smoke.
I didn't like Guiseppes either - but - we did not try the one near the resort - I hear the one near the resort is much better then the one near Bluffton, so we will revisit and revise our opinion.

We don't tend to 'fine dine' a lot at HH. For us, it's a relaxing type of trip where we are happy doing easy food in the room, grabbing a pizza, heating soup and making sandwiches.
Two things I like at the resort - the onion rings (they are too fattening but other then that) and the grilled chicken ceasar sandwich with fries at Signals at the Beach House- it is the best chicken fastfood sandwich ever!
I also enjoyed the shrimp boil which is put on by the resort. But, I felt the summer barbecue is too crowded and not relaxing although the offerings were okay.
Do anything Chef Gordon is offering, you can't miss. He does a cooking demo on appetizers and also there was one with desserts...haven't seen it in a while though. But Longview Cooking Club should not be missed....or...if you can do Private Affair.
I'll be there 2 times before your May trip - Thanksgiving and Easter. If we try any new restaurants, I will do a review.
