DD got chicken breasts out of freezer last night to thaw, and set them on the counter. She misunderstood the directions I and DH gave her, and left it out today too.

She made the recipe at 5:15 this evening. Had it in the oven by 5:30. Do you think it is safe since it was left out for about 17 hours?

I asked but she wasn't sure if the chicken was still cold when she started the recipe.

Darn--And it smells good too. Would you eat it?

Ack - no way. Meat should always be defrosted in the fridge. I wouldn't eat anything left out more than two hours.

Food poisoning isn't something I'd want to risk, no matter how good it smells. :thumbsup2

I would order a pizza and trash it. No chance I would eat that. JMO.

Yeah, thats what DH and I think too. DD is so upset. In her room crying, and being quite moody over the whole thing. Just hoping someone might think it's ok.

Not sure why DH didn't stick it in the fridge this morning :headache:

I'd eat it.

I've done the same thing before... oops.

Same scenario... it smelled too good to resist.

And you know what, I am still here to tell you about it! ;)

Your stomachs will thank you later when all of you are NOT sick. :goodvibes

Good call on the pizza, I would not chance it with chicken. It really needs to be properly refrigerated.

Poor DD, better luck with her next recipe.

Definitely good call on throwing it out. It is my understanding that poultry should never be thawed on the counter. In fact, I rarely thaw any meat on the counter. I will use good old cold water in a pinch.

Could you microwave the dish? Wouldn't that kill the germs?

Microwaves really don't cook long and hot enough to kill many bacteria and germs properly. Plus getting salmonella from chicken can be really bad. :crazy2:

I don't thaw on the counter - only in the fridge, or under cold running water. I don't let protein sit out for more than 2 hours.

Put the chicken in a bowl, set in the sink and let COLD water run over it. The water does not have to be turned on full blast, just a steady stream. Hot water on raw meat will cause bacteria to grow and cause a person to get sick. Do not risk it. I worked as a food chemist for several years. Chicken breasts take about 20 minutes to defrost using this method.
