Just wondering how people with several contracts manage with different use years and different home resorts.
I currently own two contracts at the VWL both December use years.
If I wanted to more points what would be the best way of looking at this?
Should I continue with the same use year but different resort ? vice versa?
This all stems from my husband not wanting to buy a vacation home and thinks I am better off adding points to my portfolio.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I would think that you would be better off with the same UY (even if the points are at other resorts) as long as you have the same master contract. My reasoning is that if the points are on the same master contract, then you can combine them at 7 months.

If you have either a different UY or the same UY but with a different master contract then you can't combine the points.

If there is another resort that you would like to assure you can get a reservation before 7 months out, you'll want to do an add-on at that reservation. So, if you think you'll want to get a GV every so other, you'll need to add on at a resort with a GV.

But do an add-on so you don't have to worry about transferring points from one contract to another.

We have 3 different months under 3 different account numbers. You are able to make reservation for 7-11 month out without any problem. It does take time on the phone when you have different contracts for them to link all together. We have 755 pts and use them all up on two or 3 trips a years. Home base is OKW.

Question...we are considering getting two 50 or 60 point contracts--one for each son, now 5 and 3. From the sounds of it both of their names would have to be added to our "master contract" for us to link the points annually. Is that correct? We are considering the same YU, but to different home resorts. Our goal is to add the points together every other year for a stay and then break them apart later. We want something they can enjoy now and then give to them as adults when they have families. Any thoughts to add or consider before we make the leap? Am I understanding everything correctly?

don't worry about putting their names on the contract at this point (it would be sorta like putting their names on the deed to your house...not a good idea). you can will it to them or gift it to them later...

just be aware that you can only book each home resort at 11 months with that home resort's points...banking and borrowing will accomplish your "every other year" plan but make sure you understand that you can't "add the points together" until 7 months out if you aren't banking or borrowing pts.

You can't add a minor to a real estate contract. But you are correct, that the owners of the contract would have to be the same in order to have one master contract.

But your two contracts would have to have the same contract number (master number) but different suffix numbers (.000, .001, .002). If you are purchasing directly from Disney, your first contract must be at least 160 points (unless you get in the 100 point contract). Any add-on through Disney (less than 160) would have the same master contract number with a different suffix. If you go through resale, they have to have the same UY and you have to get Disney to agree before you purchase.

When you have two different resorts, you can still only use the points from one resort at 11 months. At 7 months you can combine them if they are one master contract. If they are different master contracts, you have to transfer between them to use the points for parts of a night.

When it comes time to divest what is the effect of the major/minor contract number. Here are three situations.

You have two contracts for the same resort with the same use year. Each contract has its own major contract number. It appears that you could divest one of these contracts without any problem.

You have two contracts for the same resort with the same use year but they share the same major contract number and differ only in the minor part of the contract number. Is it possible to sell one of the contracts without any problem or do you need special permission from the mouse. If it is possible would there be additional charges.

You have a large number of points all under one major contract number and want to divest part of it. Is it possible to split the contract. If it is possible would there be additional charges.

This is an issue that is important when deciding how to add points and it can not be fixed with pixie dust.

yes. you can sell either contract. without any problem. (this is where resale contracts of under 150 pts come from.)

Thanks for the answers. I am guessing that Disney has more flexibility splitting contracts. When points are available from them you seem to be able to get what ever number you want.

If you find you are travelling at different times of the year, you might find some value in having a different Use Year than your original contracts just to maximize banking deadlines and possible issues with a cancellation. Otherwise having the same Use Year does simplify banking deadlines and 7 month reservations.

We have 4 different Use Years (Feb, Mar, Jun, Sep) at 2 resorts and try to use each contract when reserving our stays throughout the calendar year. We use our Sept. points usually in September, December and January - our March points in May/June - our June points also in June/September - and our February points (these are HH points) for summer HH trips.

While we have not had to cancel many reservations, we've not yet had to lose any points as a result.

As for selling a contract, each contract is a unique entity. If you have a Master contract of 160 points and an add-on of 25 points - you could keep the 25 points and sell the 160 point contract without any problem.
