We haven't been to Disney in years. Jiko at Animal Kingdom Lodge has been recommended to us. We were told that there is some sort of viewing balcony to the animals - is this in Jiko? Also, how far is Animal Kingdom Lodge from Animal Kingdom Park? Thanks for any info!

Animal Kingdom Lodge is pretty close to Animal Kingdom - less than a mile, I think.
No, the observation area isn't in Jiko. AKL's restaurants are on the first floor; the lobby, and the observation area, are on the third level. I'm not even sure Jiko has any windows.

And do you have to be a guest of AKL to be able to go to the observation deck?

And would you recommend it for the food?

No, to your first question; and while I haven't eaten at Jiko for a few years, yes, I would recommend it.

There are windows but they don't overlook the animal areas. The food is really good. We wouldn't dream of visiting WDW without eating at least one meal at Jiko, it's one of our favorites. (maybe even THE favorite)

You don't have to be a guest at the resort or restaurant to check out the savanna areas. When you walk into the lobby of the AKL the main viewing area is straight ahead and out the other side of the lobby. (actually down a few stairs and out) There is a great giftshop as well.

The AKL is close to AK, but you will need to drive or take a bus or taxi to get there.

Jiko is wonderful. They do have a few windows but not a view of animals. The food and service has been great when I have been there.

The olive flatbread is awesome.

Others have answered about the animal views (none). The food and service at Jiko is superb. We were there on January 2nd (we try to do Jiko every trip) and everything was excellent. Even the picky eater (DS11) was pleased.

Jiko is my all time favorite restaurant at WDW. I love the food I love the atmosphere I love going to the AKL and walking around. I don't have a down side to this restaurant.

I loved both Jiko and Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Jiko has more romantic atmosphere, and Boma has a terrific all-you-can eat dinner with especially tasty soups.
