I notice several of the DIS'ers have moved to Orlando area. We currently live in the midwest and I have to say this winter has me thinking of moving. We vacation at DisneyWorld at least once a year. My husband has retired but I am considering a job in Sanford. Anybody tell me about this area? Also if we moved down there I am thinking about 6 months in our motorhome while we look for a house? Have any of you done this? Are there any good RV parks that would fit for this?
I am also worried that living this close to Disney may take the magic out of it?

AMEN!! I'm from central Illinois and this winter has been really bad.

We are trying to stick it out another 8-10 years until my partner can retire with full benefits from the state of Illinois.

Our plan is to move within an hour of Disney. I personally want to live north of disney in Windermere but I think that is a pretty expensive place to live. Better start saving now!

I'm curious about losing the magic if moving closer as well.

We vacation, also, at least once a year at WDW and often think about moving to FL but I worry about the annual trips not being as special. We live about an hour from a Six Flags park and I haven't gone in probably 20 years. Granted you can't compare Six Flags to Disney but this is still a concern.

I personally wouldn't move to Sanford. I like be on the other side. If you don't mind being an hour away - I'd look at Lakeland depending on the job market you at looking for.

Sanford just seems so far.... And from what I've seen it isn't a very nice place.

Of course things around here are ever changing - you never know what will be a "nice" city when you get here.

We prefer a small town that we can walk or bike wherever we need to go.

We are a family of four and downsized to one car when we moved!

The weather is amazing (most of the time - right now we are longing for heat!).

Most campgrounds would accommodate you long term like that. It is a matter if picking your location.

For me moving to FL is not just about Disney.

I like warm weather.
I like palm trees and other tropical plants.
If we move to central FL we are only a few hours from either coast for beaches.
Plus there are so many other things to do and places to see all within a day trip.
There is good shopping as well.

I used to live in Pennsylvania, but have lived in the Orlando area (about 50 minutes North of WDW) for quite awhile. I don't think any of the "magic" has been lost from when I used to vacation at WDW as a kid.

We still go and enjoy Walt Disney World often. The great thing about living close is you aren't always feeling rushed. If we hit the parks on a busy day, we skip the major lines and do some of the more obscure attractions. It also gives us more time to "stop and smell the roses".

Another benefit of living in the area is that there are 2 other sets of major theme parks. If you do find yourself losing the Disney magic, take a year off. Just get a SeaWorld / Busch Gardens or Universal Studios / Islands of Adventure annual pass one year to try something new and different. Then, when you come back to Disney you'll find the magic has been rekindled.

Personally I find it even more magical.

For example - during Flower and Garden we head over a couple nights a week just for the kids to play on the play set.

Our date nights often involve dinner at Epcot.

We get to do the classes at Food an Wine and Flower and Garden without feeling like we have to squeeze it in.

My moms group often goes to Epcot for our MNO.

Magic Kingdom and tomorrow land because you don't have homework tonight? Sure!

It is a different magic - not so whirlwind - and I like it even more!

We moved to Tampa area 3 years ago this summer, my job transferred me here (were in IA/Omaha NE area before). We have annual passes to Disney as well as the other area parks (Uni, SW, BG). For us, living approx 1 hr away has definitely NOT taken away the magic or the fun. It has, however, changed the way we are in the parks. Before, we tended to be pretty commando, wanting to cram in the fun. Now, we go for weekends and we still may spend all day at the parks, but we may spend a couple hours in the Innoventions buildings at Epcot, for example. Our pace is somewhat more relaxed, we don't feel the need to buy a bunch of souvenirs so we are now choosier (we still buy them but not every time, now we largely buy the costlier souvenir items that we would not have bought before but only one costlier item per trip or that kind of thing). And we ADORE the weather. We have been here long enough that the 50's of the past couple days were something to dislike, but at the same time, we've watched the news footage of the rest of the country, including the ice this week in GA/SC, etc and we are SO thankful not to be dealing with any of that! I can't speak to the Sanford area, sorry, but I think living in the motor home and/or renting a place for an extended time before buying is a great idea. We are still renting and may never buy, as there are a lot of great rentals (also motor home parks are everywhere here).

This 100% - my favorite thing about living here is getting to see palm trees everyday!

The weather drew me - but I knew I wanted to be close to Disney.

Shopping - meh. I'm not a big shopper.

We can hear live music for free every night if the year.

We have events every weekend / fairs, rodeos, 5K's.

My kids play outside every day and walk to school an home everyday. Seriously I'm so pleased with how much there is to do outside if Disney. :)

Sanford just seems so far.... And from what I've seen it isn't a very nice place.

Only the area right around the center of Sanford is poor and rundown, but almost the entire rest of Seminole County is very nice (other than a few older areas in Altamonte Springs and Longwood). Just a few miles away from Sanford are Lake Mary and Winter Springs which are both very nice areas.

The western Lake Mary area (Markham Woods and Alaqua area) features some of the most exclusive and pricey neighborhoods in the entire metro area where plenty of professional golfers and NBA players live.

The area is also not touristy at all due to being 30 - 45 minutes from Walt Disney World.

I don't know what the OP's budget is, but if you look at either Lake Mary or Winter Springs you would only be ~10 minutes away from a job in Sanford and ~40 minutes from Walt Disney World.

We moved here 3 1/2 years ago for my husbands job. It was a quick and surprising move, so we have had to adjust our thinking after being here, not beforehand.
Overall, we like the Orlando area. There is always something to do and being outdoors 9 months of the year is wonderful. We live just north of the MK on the Winter Garden/ Windermere border. Average homes in this area are in the 250K to 350K range. The cost of living is pretty close to what we experienced in upstate NY (Rochester - Buffalo area). Some things are less (taxes, gas, utilities), some things more (housing & food).
Sanford is pretty far away and would discourage last minute trips to WDW. There are a lot of nicer areas between Sanford and Disney that would only be 45 minutes or an hour away. In that area and newer home in a nice neighborhood would run between 150K - 200K.
I know everyone says the magic is still there. Don't get me wrong, we still love Disney and visit about once a week, but it IS different. One of the things we loved most was the total escape from reality that a Disney vacation used to offer us. That is gone. I still have to go home and cook dinner or answer phone calls - everyday life.
That said, we have found that there are a lot of little things to do in the parks that we never made time for before. So it's a trade off. If you have any specific questions ask away or PM me.

I just like bot having to drive through Orlando to get to the stuff I want to do! I'm sure thee is nothing wrong with surrounding areas of Sanford.

Also sounds like maybe schools are not an issue for OP - but maybe for others reading - so I recommend checking your zoned school very carefully! :). Charters are great - but I think hard to get into when you don't currently live here.

We moved to FL when DH retired. We had planned moving to FL and had been looking at the panhandle and west coast. Then the rash of 2004 hurricanes came along and I knew he'd never do that!! So I started searching again and we chose Leesburg, less than an hour -- and an easy drive -- from Disney. Not a large city by any means.
The only knowledge we have of Sanford is flying in and out of the airport there. It wasn't any further than driving to MCO, but I don't know the area as far as living there full time.
We never lost the magic and it meant having APs and going when we pleased and choosing less busy times and avoiding the unmerciful heat and humidity. Yes, it's cold up here and winters can be miserable. But we never got used to the H & H in central Florida. Hah.
I miss it, but with all the changes, it's probably likely we'd have done Disney less often. It was convenient being AP holders and living close by.
Good luck!
;)

Which areas are good for teachers? I've thought about making the move. I've worked only in schools with mostly high poverty and ELLs, so that's not my concern. I'm wondering about pay, benefits, etc. Would love to be closer to WDW!

schools are county based here / so pay and benefits would be county wide. Unless maybe a charter school may have different pay scales.

I appreciate the responses so far. Our kids are grown so schools are not a problem. The job is in Sanford so I need to stay within a 30 min drive if possible. As far as housing, I do not like living in apartments and prefer a more rural environment.

Great post! I am in a similar situation as the OP, minus the retirement. Because my DH is an IT engineer and works from home, he can work from anywhere he wants that has a high speed internet connection! We live in the Kansas City, MO area and this winter has us seriously considering Florida. Another great Florida factor for us is the close proximity to the ports in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Cape Canaveral, since we'd LOVE to be able to take advantage of the great last minute cruise prices with the ability to drive to port. Thanks for all the great tips!!! :goodvibes

That is what my husband does for work. The freedom is wonderful!

If you like a more rural environment, I would look about 15 minutes East of Sanford in the Geneva area or about 20 minutes West of Sanford in the eastern Lake County area (Sorrento / eastern Eustis). Both areas are 40 to 50 minutes from WDW (using toll roads).

You also asked about RV parks. I know there are some around (particularly to the West of the Sanford area), but I don't really have any insight into what might be nice. I know there is a Wekiva Falls KOA by the Wekiva River which is about 15 minutes West of Sanford. That area is very rural.
