I'm not sure what the policies are besides the obvious smoking/ non-smoking room. I got a BWI room once where there was a full ashtray on the balcony (housekeeping had missed it) so I am thinking it's okay to smoke on the balcony in a non-smoking room. What about common areas? And what about cleaning up butts, etc? I don't mind smoking but am very allergic and when I am in the jacuzzi and someone lights up next to me it's hard to take.

Does anyone know what the guidelines are? :wizard:

While we all know that not everyone follows the rules ( and sometimes the hotels bend the rules) ;) The policies at WDW are... NON smoking rooms at the hotels are completely non smoking, that includes the balconies (as the entire floor is non smoking). They do not mix smoking and non smoking in the same area that way the smell does not carry into the hallways.

Smoking outside is only allowed in designated smoking areas. All common ground guest areas are considered non smoking, this includes the pool areas. Smoking is not allowed in any indoor area (resturants, lounges, lobbies) in accourdance to Florida Law.

Hope that helps to answer your question, again, some people don't follow the rules (or just don't know them) and sometimes the rules are bent by the hotel on a case by case basis.

At the POR there was a very full ashtray left while we were staying there on the bench in front of our mansion. Is that normally a common area where people are not supposed to smoke? Just wondering :flower:

The pool area is non smoking? I wish someone would tell all the smokers I've seen at the pools over the years that. That's one of my biggest pet peeves...do you really need to be smoking where all the little kids are running around and trying to swim and having a good time with some fresh air? (not to mention us non smoking adults).

I actually was a little surprised at the fact that there was a smoking area at the poolside bar at AKL. I would not have expected that.

Ladyhawke10 ~Just about every place in CALIF is smoke-free, and I know you hail from the Golden state too! Well...in Florida, things have slowly moved in the same direction. I used to detest visiting restaurants with "smoking" sections visiting the sunshine state, which was the case until the law was revised a couple years ago. I also enjoy sitting on a balcony, or by the pool...without having to endure second-hand smoke. As CDSTapisRouge wrote...I too thought every place was smoke-free on disney property, except where designated (special areas). I still believe this is the case, as they certainly do not want people tossing butts all over the ground, and around the pools (lots of people with bare feet running around!). :earseek:

I actually had to ASK a person to STOP SMOKING on the balcony of the Rose and Crown, as we were trying to eat dinner. We were seated in the top tier, by the steps to the lower level. During the illuminations show, some folks from inside...came outside and stood hovering over our table. One man lit a cigarette, blowing the smoke over us/dinner. I politely asked him to extinguish it. He became hostile, and the manager quickly appeared and ushered the gent away. :goodvibes He was SO nice and apologetic...even bought us all dessert! ;)

I know this has been addressed often, BUT a NON-SMOKING ROOM is just that--the room only. The balcony is outside and is okay for smoking. Only the interior of the room is non-smoking.

I am not a smoker, and I am highly allergic, so I am not saying this because I want to smoke on a balcony--I am saying it because it is the actual policy at the resorts. If you are outside on your balcony you can smoke.

The parks are non-smoking except in designated areas, and the interior of a resort is non-smoking (as are all restaurants on Disney property.)

That is interesting, that you can smoke on all the non-smoking room balconies. I guess that explains what happened at our BWI room...I had assumed the former guest was not really supposed to be smoking out there.

If someone lits up in the jacuzzi am I supposed to tell them its not allowed? I am interested in the parameters. I want everyone to have a wonderful time at WDW, so I'm not trying to single anyone out, just wondered what is kosher with Disney, and if its up to me to leave if someone's smoking or if they are supposed to be finding another place...

There are ashtrays at the bar and the pool areas of all the hotels I have been at. I would hope most people would be considerate and not smoke near other people (I usually go into a dark corner to smoke) and while we always ask for a smoking room ....it doesn't always happen and we are told at check in that housekeeping will bring up an ashtray for us to smoke on the balconey. I'm not sure I agree w/ that arangement but unfortunately that is the way that it is. I really hate to get involved in these discussions because they usually get heated. Good luck and have a great vacation.

I am not a smoker but at GF I heard a cast member tell someone that they could smoke on their balcony even if their room was non smoking. ALso the pool bar at the GF had ashtrays so I don't think the pool area was non smoking.

At AKL, there is absolutely no smoking on the balconies overlooking the savannah. You may smoke in a smoking room on the savannah, but not on the balcony.

At WL, you may NOT smoke on a balcony of a non-smoking room. I know this because on one of my trips one of us was a smoker and we were specifically instructed that we could have a smoking room and smoke on that balcony, but if we chose a non-smoking room, we would not be allowed to smoke on that balcony. Seems fair to me.

Also there is not a policy of no smoking at WDW pools. You may smoke at all pools if you so choose, according to several CMs I have spoken to. Not sure how fair that policy is, but that's what I have been told.

As with all things at Disney, there is policy and then there is what is enforced. They are not the same.

Interesting about being able to smoke on the balcony of a non smoking room!
My husband and I smoke and we get a smoking room SO THAT we can smoke on the balcony. We would rather NOT smoke in the room since it stinks!!!!
I don't think it is right to tell people they can smoke on a non smoking balcony.... It's not like it doesn't come right back in the room!!!!
Also... You are on a different wing usually when you have a smoking room so I would be pretty upset if I was a non smoker and i was sitting out on my balcony enjoying the morning and my neighbor was out smoking---- having it drift over to me!!!
Ok Done with my little rant!! :teeth:

This is not entirely accurate. The Hawaii building at the PR has smoking and non-smoking rooms on the third floor.

I'm almost positive that there are a mixture on the CL at the BWI as well.

The last thing I want to do is stir up an argument on an already very sensitive topic, but I don't agree with some of the things that are said. I am a smoker, not the typical blow it in your face kind, but a smoker none the less. I make a point to stay as far as I can away from people that are not smoking, and I avoid smoking next to children if at all possible. However, when we are travelling to WDW in April I will be travelling with my Mother and Father in law neither of which smoke. We are travelling together and really want our rooms to be connected. They will want a non smoking room, and if we can't get a smoking room next to theirs then I will definately want to go out on the balcony and have a cigarette instead of having to go all the way downstairs. I guess my thought on the subject is that as long as I shut the door to the balcony so that the smoke doesn't go back in the room I am doing what I should to protect other people. Am I missing something?

So then people on the next balcony (and above) will have to smell your smoke. Very inconsiderate. :sad2:

I think the problem is that the smoke will drift and be bothersome to people in surrounding rooms who would like to enjoy the balcony but can't because of the smoke.

You are incorrect. The balconies of non smoking rooms are also non smoking. I do not want to inhale anyone else's smoke while trying to enjoy my balcony. At the Poly one just has to call the front desk and management will extinguish any smoking on a balcony of a non smoking room. Wonderful policy!

I am a smoker and I do adhere to smoking policies and designated areas but what bugs me so much is people that complain even when you are smoking in an area that it is allowed. If I am in a designated smoking area and you smell my smoke, well I'm sorry but there are less and less places to smoke and I do try to be considerate of non-smokers but I feel if I am in a designated area than I should not be harrassed for it.
