I’ve always had gas except on vacation when some homes or DVc have electric. I much prefer gas. I just replaced my cooktop with a new five burner model with much higher BTUs. It was a pricey Bosch but well worth it.
I can boil a large pan of water for spaghetti in less than three minutes. I have stainless steel top. I don’t find it hard to clean. And there are three sets of grates, one for each side thst Goes over two burners and one in the middle over the biggest grate. Those are ceramic and go right in the dishwasher as do the cersmic tops of the burners. I’d be afraid of an electric just because of the cats walking across the stove. They aren’t often on the counters but it would worry me.
we have electric double ovens.

I hadn’t even thought about pets, as our cat is seven and thankfully past the jumping on counter top stage. But she used too, and she loves the smell of people food. I can’t even imagine.

I grew up with gas, but got used to electric when we moved into our current house. Then a later switch from plug-in burners to a ceramic top was a game changer that I feel grateful for every day. I realize that gas is more controllable, but having to move pans off the burner for a minute or so when I need to reduce the heat is a small price to pay for how easy it is to keep the surface clean. Both my daughters now have gas and I don't envy them one little bit. I've tangled with cleaning both their surfaces, and would never go back.

I started to use Weiman's cooktop cleaner (from my grocery store) as soon as I got my ceramic top stove. I found that by keeping the surface smooth and glide-y, think "ice-rink surface", it is incredibly easy to keep clean. I just make sure I clean it every time it gets dirty. Yes, I often need to use a razor blade to scrape stuff off that doesn't come off initially. But I keep the paint-scraper kind in a nearby drawer, and as long as I put a thin coat of the Weiman's on before scraping, and then finish by using a little Weiman's again over the whole surface, it's no harder to keep my stove clean than it is to take care of my counters.

One caveat, though. I keep an electric kettle to quickly boil water to for tea, etc. Other posters are right - it does take much longer to boil water!

The only thing I don't like about gas is that the heat is less even. My parents have gas, I have an electric (glass cooktop, not induction) - it's easier to cook bacon at my house because you can have the low heat spread evenly over the large pan. With gas the outer bits of the pan don't get enough heat.

It may be the pan you are using. I have all stainless steel pans. They all have a thick disk on the bottom of the pan that goes all the way to the edge of the pans for even heating.

I LOVE gas burners. Grew up with them. As others have said, changing heat temperatures is immediate. My parents had a gas stove for years, then thought they were "upgrading" to the electric coils. They hated how long it took to heat up and cool down.

A couple years ago, my apartment building switched from gas to electric burners, the kind with a cast iron disk burner. I haven't been able to cook pancakes or eggs right since. :headache: The temperature is NEVER right.

And now with climate change, and we have to worry about hurricanes coming up the coast and doing real damage, I have to have a few cans of canned cooking fuel in storage, in case the power goes out.
