Questions about owning a domain/website?

Does anyone own a domain/website that could answer a few questions for me? I was thinking of buying one. I looked on godaddy.com and found a url, and it said it was available for 11.99/year. So my main question is, do I actually own it then? Is that just a maintenance fee, or ownership fee, or is it a rental fee? I'm not really sure how that all works. Thanks.

You would own the name. To build the site, you would then have to find a hosting service that would "host" your webpage.

Different domain sites are different. Some will rent you the name and they retain ownership - which means you are screwed if later you want to change companies.

GoDaddy gives YOU the rights, so YOU own the name.

Why is it costing you $11.99? Are you ordering other services?

Check out this thread at Fatwallet. scroll to the LAST PAGE. You should be able to find a code for $1.99 or $7 at the most.

I use Google's free hosting and my own Internet provider's free webpages & templates for members. (I have Verizon.) I have a few web pages for different things. Then I use the "Domain forwarding" feature at GoDaddy so people seamlessly go to those pages without knowing they are separate companies.

It works like Call Forwarding for telephones. They call the number you give them, and you can have them reach you at an alternate number.

All I pay for is $7 each year for Godaddy's renewal fees.

Thanks for all the input. So, for step 1, and some of you may have said this already, but I need it a little clearer probably...where is the best place to 'buy' the domain name from and what charges are associated with it? Thanks.

Godaddy is fine. Go to my first post, click on the link, get a coupon code. Input it in the GoDaddy website when it comes to paying.

We always use godaddy and have for many years now. I have my own online business and used them for my domain name. DH is a website developer and host websites as well and for all the sites he has made for people he uses godaddy. Do a google search and I am sure you will find a coupon to use on the site. I wouldn't sign up for anything extra, it should just cost about $10.99 to buy the name and then you pay that fee every year. If you buy a few years in advance they will discount it.

Just to be clear, you don't (can't) actually own a domain name. You have license to hold it, as long as you comply with the registrar's procedures and pay the fees. If you stop paying, you lose it.

I've used both godaddy and bluehost, and they're both reliable so far. Have fun creating your new site! It can be frustrating at times but it's addictive!

I have had my domain name for years through Internet Solutions (aso known as Internic). It is actually an exclusive license to use that name as long as I make my payments. Since I did a multi-year registration it was something like $9 per year. Since I have purchased my site hosting from them, they have extended the term of the license for as long as I use them as host at no extra charge.
