Here's the background:

We are looking to have a pool installed. Apparently it has been a very slow season for pool installers.

The installer I am probably going to pick has already (without me asking) upgraded features (about $2800 worth) of the pool to entice me to sign and have the pool installed this fall as opposed to next spring.

My question is how far would you go in trying to get additional discounts? I'm happy with the current deal but if he is willing to negotiate should I push for more? To a certain degree I feel sorry for the guy if this has been a tough season but on the other hand it could save me more money.

Be careful. Pools are one of the biggest reason for contractor complaints.....especially when the season is slow. It does not matter how big a discount you get if the pool never gets finished or the work is shoddy.

If a pool contractor is hurting for business, I'd look elswhere. there might be a good reason why his company is hurting.

My first step would be a visit to your local BBB regarding the contractor.

We are in the same boat. The company we think we are going with has been around 75 years- great reputation but also said they are slow. I think it's slow for all of them. They threw in a lot of stuff for us too. Then when they came to stake it out yesterday they added in more "unforseen" costs - like removing a tree. I am calling to see what they do now - esp if we say we are walking. I guess it never hurts to ask.

If you are happy with the currect deal,
If the contractor is well established and has a good reputation,
If you believe that they will get it installed this year...

Take the deal and maybe try to squeeze a 2009 pool opening out of them (to make sure everything is OK for your first season).

A good working relationship with the 'pool people' vs. animosity over difficult negotiations has some monetary value. Also, there are always 'surprise' expenses to deal with (fence, landscaping, patio/deck, toys....).

Enjoy your pool!
