Questions about Fast pass vs magic band

We are not staying on a resort and had not planned on purchasing a magic band for $13 a piece. Is it the same thing as a fast pass technically? I added the app My Disney Experience and my understanding is, once i get my tickets, I can use this app to book a fast pass for up to 3 rides? If that is the case, really what would the purpose be for a magic band?

No, the band is the same thing as your ticket (not a fast pass). Convenience of having it on your wrist, as opposed to taking out the ticket each time..... if you have Memory Maker the videos and automatic addition of ride photos to your Memory Maker account are pretty much the only differences.

Yes, add your tickets and 30 days prior to your trip you can schedule your 3 FP per day.
