I buy my kids clothes within reason of course. They only get shoes and socks and necessities at the beginning of the school year. Its still 100+ degrees when they start school so no need for pants, long sleeves or coats at that time. I like to wait until Oct and then see what they've outgrown.
In general they each get 3 pairs of new jeans, a couple of new shirts and a new hoodie as well as the shoes, socks and undies they get in August.
DS prefers everything to be Nike and he loves his basketball shorts throughout the year so I replace those as needed. They aren't too expensive.
DD doesn't care about brand, it just has to be "cute" and her style. So she shops Kohls, Rue 21, Forever 21, Delia's and Aeropostale clearance racks.
They also each got some new clothes for Christmas. When warm temps come around again I know DD needs new shorts and they both need new swimsuits.
We don't do an allowance. I just replace things as needed, usually at the beginning of the school year, in Oct when it cools down and in March when spring hits.
