Question to those with 9th and 10th graders

I buy my kids clothes within reason of course. They only get shoes and socks and necessities at the beginning of the school year. Its still 100+ degrees when they start school so no need for pants, long sleeves or coats at that time. I like to wait until Oct and then see what they've outgrown.

In general they each get 3 pairs of new jeans, a couple of new shirts and a new hoodie as well as the shoes, socks and undies they get in August.

DS prefers everything to be Nike and he loves his basketball shorts throughout the year so I replace those as needed. They aren't too expensive.

DD doesn't care about brand, it just has to be "cute" and her style. So she shops Kohls, Rue 21, Forever 21, Delia's and Aeropostale clearance racks.

They also each got some new clothes for Christmas. When warm temps come around again I know DD needs new shorts and they both need new swimsuits.

We don't do an allowance. I just replace things as needed, usually at the beginning of the school year, in Oct when it cools down and in March when spring hits.

While DH and I don't have kids... when I was in highschool I got two shopping trips per year paid for by my dad- beginning of the school year and beginning of summer. Anything else was on my dime.

Luckily for my parents, I hit my growth spurt pretty much all at once- 6 inches over the course of one summer:scared1: before I started junior high. I really feel for parents and kids who are dealing with the constant growth business.

My daughter is 15, in 9th grade. She has BERY expensive taste - Kate spade, coach, lilly pulitzer, etc. I give her $, like 50$, here and there for good grades and buy her things as we find them but she mainly shops at consignment and yard sakes for those brands. Sometimes she finds them, sometimes she doesn't. If she wants to buy something that's not necessary and a name brand, she has to save up. She wanted a 350$ Kate spade purse and knew I wouldn't buy it so she worked hard, saved up and bought it (on sale for 100$). She keeps good care of her things and after about 6 months, she sells it on eBay. She also sells things she gets for good deals on eBay - that's where she makes most of her $.

With my teenager daughter I flipped it around.

I take care of the other stuff she needs and let her buy her clothes or most of them I did take her shopping for all her volleyball stuff. I am a runner so I know that quality shoes are expensive and so is other gear. And to me better gear prevents injury.

We took her to the outlet mall after Christmas and let her spend her money. I thought it would be a quick in and out trip. But nope it was hours and she decided what she truly wanted, needed and figuring out the best bang for the buck.

I have found that letting her buy her clothes solves all the issues. Oh at least I hope so. She gets what she wants, the size, color and fit. And by using her money she is frugal.

Our shopping trips are usually like that!! I'm thinking an hour tops and it's never that quick. I've found my daughter takes better care of her things when she pays for it using her own money. My money - it doesn't get treated as nice. She definitely values it more when she's had to save up and use her money!
