Question regarding seat assignment

We really don't fly often, but I have seen some pretty heated discussions on this forum regarding seat assignments on planes. We've flown Sun Country before, and I know there was an upcharge we paid to get assigned seats. Does anyone know if Delta Airlines has this same option, or if they automatically assign seats? We have 2 young children, and although the world wouldn't end if we were split up, it would come very close for one of them! There is a Delta flight that's about $175 cheaper, but I guess I would rather pay more to have the option to choose seat assigments. Thanks!

Delta allows you to select seats when you buy the tickets for no charge. No guarantee seats will be available together, so check the seating chart before you buy the tickets.

Put your reservation number in, progress to select seats and chose which seats you want. The "preferred" seats are usually blocked out unless you are a Medallion level Skymiles member. If so, you can chose any seat in your class. If there is a preferred seat you want, you can buy it for an up charge. If you don't know what seats you want, go to www.seatguru.com and put in your flight number. It will tell you the best seats and the worst seats.

As pps have stated, you can select your seats with Delta at the time of purchase or you and go into your itinerary and select them. Depending on when your flight is, once you have your seats, keeping checking the site to see if anything changes since they may change the type of plane and the computer will reassign all seats without you knowing it.
